I am trying to get rid of my old Apple ID that is useless and update it to the one I have on my computer. I am trying to delete my old one and replace it with me new one but it says this email address is not available. Choose another address. This is the only phone I have. I had my previous phone stolen so it might still be plugged into that one but this phone is what I want it to be on. Is there anything I can do?

Apple does not have a statement about email address re-use in its documentation that I can find but here is an April 2021 post by ASC contributor IdrisSeabright that was recommended by the official Apple team -
"Once you've used an email address as an Apple ID, it can't be used again for an Apple ID, even if the first Apple ID has been deleted."
