tvOS 15 airplay issue

Today my Apple TV 4th gen got automatically updated to latest version of tvOS and suddenly when using airplay connected speaker (Yamaha sound bar) sound get out of sync in a very strange way. When watching any content first couple of seconds audio will be in sync then slowly audio will get more and more out of sync and some kind of video stuttering will show ( video stutter never get introduced if audio goes directly to a tv speaker only start showing when using airplay). When connecting airplay speaker to my iPhone everything works perfectly and in sync. I tried audio calibration option but always comes with error. Don’t know if someone else have the same issue, wish I could downgrade tvOS to old version.

Same here, i've done a lot of test and this is just shameful.

Airplay is a proprietary protocol, they must know everything but no, it's a mess... bah

My configuration:

  • Apple TV 4K 2017 *HARD WIRED*
  • Panasonic GZ950 via HDMI
  • Airport Express 802.11n *HARD WIRED* connected to Rotel RA-1062 ampli

All hard wired to the same Netgear gigabit switch

I've just initialized the ATV yesterday with no luck.

I've done some other test with my hardware:

  • ipad (ipadOS 15.0) streaming audio to Airport Express via Airplay (Rotel output audio) -> A/V in sync
  • ipad (ipadOS 15.0) streaming A/V to ATV4K (tvOS 15.0) via Airplay (TV output audio) -> A/V in sync
  • iphone (iOS 15.0) streaming audio to Airport Express via Airplay (Rotel output audio) -> A/V in sync
  • iphone (iOS 15.0) streaming A/V to ATV4K (tvOS 15.0) via Airplay (TV output audio) -> A/V in sync
  • ATV4K (tvOS 15.0) streaming audio to Sony Headphones via Bluetooth (Headphones output audio) -> A/V in sync
  • ATV4K (tvOS 15.0) streaming audio to Airport Express via Airplay (Rotel output audio) -> A/V out of sync, video judder and stutter

The same happens in all refresh rates (60,50,25,24hz), video modes (SDR,HDR,DV) and with frame matching on or off.

So the problem seems indeed a problem of the new video player in tvOS 15.0 with airplay...

So disappointed after a so boring release without new features, that even broke things that usually worked

Hello SanoRye,

Based on your post it sounds like you're having an issue using AirPlay with your Apple TV and soundbar.

Have you tried disconnecting the soundbar and adding it back to test?

If so, you may want to reach out to the manufacturer. Since this only happens with the soundbar after the update, there may be an incompatibility with the system software. Checking to see if there is an update for your soundbar can help isolate this further.

Keep us updated.

Cheers!

ayrtonoc - I'm happy to report that building the developmental branch of shairport-sync with AP2 support solves my video / audio sync issue. However, the volume control seems buggy. Before tvOS15, when sending audio over airplay the apple tv remote would control the volume to the airplay receiver. Now it does that about half the time but wants to control my television's volume the other half of the time regardless of which audio outputs are chosen on the ATV Maybe this is a glitch in ATV or maybe it's an incompatible bug in the shairport-sync program.

Looks like someone on this thread also had luck upgrading APTV to 15.1 beta 3 though I can't see their reply anymore. Apparently 15.1 beta 3 brought back Airplay 1 support. If someone else on this thread does that could you report your results back to this thread? I'm not sure I want to stay on the developmental AP2 branch of shairport-sync for all the reasons ayrtonoc outlined. Glad to see we're making progress in all direction.

The issue is a clear bug of TvOS 15.0

Several user reported the same thing, i think is related to airplay1, because with airplay2 i don't have same issue.

I've tried resetting all my system, AppleTV ,airport ecc ecc the only temporary fix was configure a raspberry pi with developer implementation of shairport-sync that support airplay2, but is not a viable solution because is experimental.

I appreciate a rapid fix, because that workd until last tvOS14 and i've not read anywhere that Apple should drop the airport1 support. Even more strange, if i play Music from Music app, no lag, no hiccups. Seems to me that the new video player has a really big bug redirecting audio via airplay1.

I've tried several configurations, and reset.

My configuration is all hard wired.

I think everyone is right to say it's the problem lies between video and airplay 1 devices. Sad to see it take this long to fix the issue and I'm hoping Apple isn't dropping support for airplay 1 devices because I have a perfectly good Airplay 1 receiver that I'd rather not part with or update for this reason alone.

Music streaming works perfectly fine and what's strange is that in tvOS 15 the Plex app seems to sync audio and video correctly while apps like Netflix and Criterion channel have the same issue everyone here is describing.

hello, I used AirPlay for some time during tvOS 14 era without any problem and recently tried to use it again after tvOS 15 update facing exactly the same issue on a Yamaha RX-V675:

  • sync not correct at beginning,
  • sync degrades a little bit (generating glitches in the image) to get several seconds of delay after a short time

Connection is via wire and each device (amp and TV) are connected to a Time Capsule with quality cables.

I consider moving back to OS 14 if possible

Same issue here - tvOS 15 update breaks AirPlay 1 speakers. So disappointed and horrendous customer experience. I have two airplay speakers (B&O A9 MK1 and B&W zeppelin wireless). I know both of them are old but there is no way I'm upgrading them because Apple wants to make airplay 1 obsolete. If I have to throw something out of my house, it should be the Apple TV with its disappointing software! Having reps saying no fix in sight is like saying "we know your issue, but you do not belong to the majority group of users so no we will not fix it for you as where are other priorities/we couldn't care less about you".

(An interesting pattern though, Apple is well known to have used software upgrades to force hardware updates. I loved my iPhone 5c and got a watch series 2 ceramic paired with it several years ago. I upgraded the watch from the watch app on 5c. Then after the upgrade the watch says ios10, which was the last version supported by 5c, was no longer supported. Now to keep using the expensive (then) watch I had to buy a new iPhone. It's not related to the airplay issue but I think the pattern is obvious. Unless there is a collective outcry to allow easy software downgrade we will keep losing the tech we love)

eeedddddddd when you use airplay2 the output is on both tv and airplay. with airplay1 selecting airplay output automatically drop output via hdmi. So you need to deselect the tv output from the list.

I've also read the report on 15.1 not definitive 3, but spoke of letter after alfa pubbicly is forbidden.

I could try the letter before c indeed on my ATK4K. I prefer an Apple solution.
