What is causing email to download so slowly that it has virtually stopped since updating to iOS 15?

The fix for me was disabling Protect Mail Activity. Settings/Mail/Privacy Protection/ and turn off Protect Mail Activity and Hide IP address. Now checking Mail in the app works as fast as it did in ios14.
When I updated to Ios15 one of the options I remember getting prompted for was more privacy around Mail so I said yes. It works so well apparently you can’t check or send gmail accounts in a reasonable time frame with the iOS mail app.
I tried most of the other things in this thread before hand and nothing worked. Try turning off that new feature for now and see if things start working better.
Believe it or not. When I used my VPN app. The mail download went to back to normal. If I disabled the VPV it get stuck again.
It takes forever and a day….not really that long, to open email on my iPad, however it does not occur on my iPhone. I have tried all of the suggestions I have seen posted.
Exactly what I see...sometimes even just trying to return back to the email list from reading an email. I can't believe it hasn't been addressed yet by Apple. Very annoying.
This has gone on for far to long without Apple addressing the issue! Apple, please fix this massive problem.

I believe the apple servers are at capacity because the iCloud Relay (proxy) is tar slow.
It seems to happen with me if I receive a large file from a company.
I am new to all this discussion, but wonder, do Apple move on these problems, as I never see any comment from them …??
I have several email accounts and they’re all slow to download new emails, but my Gmail account is the slowest of all.
Even after the newest IOS download/upgrade there remains the same problem. I truly wish Apple would address this problem, and soon!
I have the same ISSUE! Apple, please rectify this problem.
My iPad Pro has had these setting established for quite some time….and problems are still prevalent.
Is there a chance just deleting the Apple Mail App (if possible) and reinstalling it may fix this?
Deleting the Mail app and re-installing did not work for me…only the reset and restore did the trick for me anyway.
After 5 or more months I Finally have a Fix on slow email! I followed someone’s suggestion by backing all to iCloud, completing a factory reset and restoring iPad with iCloud backup.
I tried all of the suggestions mentioned in this thread with no luck. I found removing the mail app and then reinstalling seems to have worked. A problem I can definitely attribute to ios15.
