CAR Play Issues after IOS15 Update Cannot Load SiriusXM Or Amazon Music

Even though I can start the Sirius XM app on my iPhone and play a station when I go to the app on the car's radio screen and hit favorite channels I get a message that It cannot load Sirius XM I have to go to my phone to change the channel.

Same with Amazon music I can select a track on the iPhone but if I trying to open the app on the car radio screen gives me a can not load amazon music.

My head unit is an Alpine ILX-W650

These apps worked prior to me updating to IOS15

Hi FPGFHFMA,

We see after updating your iPhone to iOS 15, CarPlay no longer works properly with Sirius XM or Amazon Music.

As the iPhone has been recently updated, do you also have any updates for those specific apps in the App Store?

Additionally, as CarPlay interfaces with both your iPhone and the CarPlay software in your receiver, it is possible the Alpine unit may need an update for iOS 15. If the issue persists after updating the relevant apps on your iPhone, we'd recommend reaching out to Alpine for assistance in updating the firmware of the CarPlay compatible receiver if need be, or confirm its compatibility with iOS 15.

Take care.

I have a 2019 Nissan Rouge with Car Play(factory radio), the iHeart radio app has the same issue and has since the iOS 15 update. Waze and Pandora are not effected, but the iHeart app has to be started on the phone and restarted after a phone call. After the app is started the car will play the output of the app, but no remote control from the car to the app. I’ve reinstalled iHeart radio since the update since the apple store showed no updates for the app. This has to be an issue with the iOS update since the issues crosses auto manufactures and app platforms. Come on Apple, you are better then this!!!

I have read the previous threads and after spending countless hours on my phone and with Apple and Amazon reps reconfiguring my iphone 12 a thousand times over, I fear that downloading 15.1 as a test drive will do more damage to my phone apps than it already has. I would prefer that Apple legitimately come out to the public with a fix for this mess via 15.1. We shouldn't have to circumvent.

This is according to the developers of Downcast, another podcast app that is not working in CarPlay on iOS 15. I expect many other apps are experiencing the same issue:

"Many audio apps still use the com.appledeveloper.playable-content` entitlement, which allows you to provide metadata that CarPlay uses to generate the UI for your audio app. That was deprecated in iOS 15 and, apparently, obsoleted as well. A newer/better method of generating a UI in CarPlay was introduced in iOS 14. It requires a new entitlement: com.appledeveloper.carplay-audio`. Despite both entitlements being for audio apps, the new one isn’t automatically assigned to apps that already had access to the older one. Developers of such apps must request access to the new entitlement. While we did this some time ago, Apple has yet to respond. While the app has already been updated to use the new CarPlay framework, it can’t be tested on a device or submitted for review until Apple grants us access to the new entitlement. As soon as that happens, we’ll get the update out as quickly as possible."

I have this same issue with Iheart radio, Tunein and Audacy showing as an app i can select but then I pick it to load, I get a blank screen with just the 3 apps showing on the left. When I launch SiriusXM, it will say "unable to load" and I will click try again and it will load.

There are a few apps like Radioapp and Simple Radio will load...

IOS15.1 is a mess!

I revert to IOS14.8, everything is normal but I cannot pair my Iwatch with 14.8 installed.

Shoesstriss: You would think huh??

You would have thought this would have been caught during the beta testing. It’s hard to imagine that not a few of the beta testers have CarPlay and stumbled across this issue.

As I mentioned, I rolled back to 14.8 and no issues with CarPlay, everything loads as it should …the only issue I have is my watch and phone don’t talk to each other now but I can live with that for now.

Same issue with Carplay on BMW iDrive 7.1 I frequently used net radio apps like Mytuner Radio, Radio.net, Country Music Fm etc. They all worked fine until iOS 15.0 arrived. Since the update, all net radio apps show: "unable to load stations" or "unable to connect". The same goes for some Podcast apps like ARD Audiothek.

Apple successfully took down all net radio apps in Carplay. No recommended fix works. Nor the 15.0.1 update. It is a shame.

Based on what app developers have said (see my post earlier in this thread) I don't believe this will be fixed with an iOS update, but rather with individual app updates.

Apple made an entitlement used by CarPlay obsolete in iOS 15, so apps that use that entitlement no longer work. There is a new entitlement, but it requires Apple to grant use of that entitlement. At least according to developers Apple has been slow to grant use, so several apps have been left broken while they wait. Look up @downcastapp on Twitter for a better explanation. They are one of the apps that stopped working in CarPlay.

I expect all these apps will eventually release updates that will fix the issue, but in the meantime there doesn't seem to be a workaround.

My issue doesn't pertain to apps specifically. I am unable to listen to XM radio or even FM radio on my stereo while my phone is plugged into the CarPlay USB port. As soon as I try to switch over to any audio source it switches right back to CarPlay/iphone. Even then i cannot control Spotify through my car's touchscreen. The only workaround is I use my phone to play songs through Spotify. This all started with ios15 so it's not only an app issue, but a CarPlay functionality issue.

Exact Same experience on my iPhone12 with iOS 15 including the "Recent" channels in SiriusXM loading eventually.

Ironically, Pandora is the only streaming app I've tried that actually works for me (other than "Music" app). Considering they're owned by Sirrus XM, how can XM not fix their app?

And yes to anyone wondering, you can stream any app as long as you control it ON the phone itself.

Ok posting again as I apparently said a dirty word according to Apple. Can’t post about non released versions except in specific forums.

but to be clear the latest public non release version fixes everything about music streaming apps!! Hopefully you can read into that description enough.

including: IHeart, XM, Amazon and others.

for what it’s worth, Pandora was never broken for me.

Oct 6, 2021 2:00 PM in response to FPGFHFMA

I assumed this was just an Amazon Music app problem until I came to this thread. Since it seems that all these music apps are broken it would seem to be Apple's fault, especially if the new beta is fixing? How does such a thing get through beta testing. Carplay is no longer "a new platform" with all the car hardware out there...
