IOS 15 - Mail being marked as read before being opened

Hi all,

Currently using IOS 15 on an IPhone 12 Pro and since updating have noticed that my emails are being marked as read when my mail app opens. This is really annoying as I use the notification of an unread email as reminders to complete the associated task - this has only been happening since the update.

thanks

After updating to iOS 15.1 and then hard restarting my phone (hold until apple logo), this issue has not reappeared for me. I have Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, and Microsoft Exchange emails syncing, and all is well now.

It was terribly annoying and scary when it was marking items as Read initially. Try the above and see if it helps?

This is a very annoying issue that needs to be fixed by Apple as soon as possible. I have the latest iOS version 15.0.2 and it continues to happen. Usually the first email in my “unread email” chain gets marked as read. This is not only annoying but also very disruptive and could cause serious work related or other personal issues as you could miss important information/communication.

Then why don’t you tell Apple, instead of the other users in this user-to-user only forum? If you want any action from Apple you have to tell Apple. The Get Support link at the top of this page is one way to do it, if you want personalized service, or https://apple.com/feedback if you just want to make a general statement.

Behavior of my iPhone SE2 with latest iOS.

mail group “not read” is being used since it appeared in mail app.

after the last update NOT ALWAYS but from time to time, can’t understand the logic, when just visiting this group the top e-mail immediately marks as read, without any actions from my side.

very annoying.

Ok, I don’t know if this is a permanent fix, and I don’t know why it worked for me, but here it is. While I was viewing my email on my MacBook, using the Apple mail program, I went into the mail settings ( because I noticed that all of my mail folders were GONE) and inadvertently selected “mark all mail as read.” This carried over to my phone, and now every email that has come in is remaining “unread” until I read it. This has lasted a full day so far. It doesn’t answer my question about my missing mail folders, but it’s a start.

I don’t think it’s Optimum, because the email problem is happening with other providers. Apple seems to think it’s something on their end, and I’ve had several calls with engineers, etc. I noticed that some email are DELETING before my eyes, which is unnerving. Fortunately, it only happens on my iPhone and not my Mac (another reason it’s seems to be an Apple issue).

I don't understand how this is marked as solved? I don't see a solution and am experiencing the same issue with iOS 15 and iOS 15.0.1

Mail accounts types I have:

  1. Google Business
  2. Office365 (2 of them)

I don't see a pattern with a certain type of account exhibiting the "marked as read, without opening the email" I've opened an unread email, not the first in the list, and when clicking the upper left to go back to the inbox, I see the first email in the inbox get marked as read without ever opening it.

Lawrence, no this is not the issue and your response is not very helpful. All the people above (including myself) are suddenly having the issue since updating to iOS 15. It’s not logical that all of us have suddenly started reading emails somewhere else and don’t realize it? Come on now. This is not a user error or user induced issue. It is a software issue with Apple’s mail app in iOS 15. This issue did not exist before and it suddenly exists simultaneously for all the people who reported it here and in other threads. Whoever has the power, please unmark this issue as resolved and work towards a resolution. Thank you.
