Final Cut Pro freezes constantly after every action

Hi!

MacOS Monterey 12.0.1

Final Cut Pro 10.6.1

Preferences cleared (CMD+OPT while starting FCP)

After doing anything in library, adding marker, adding clip on timeline, muting audio on clip, the Final Cut Pro freezes for 4-5 seconds.

I thought it's a bug on disk (because FCP saves every action that we made), so I moved footage and library to second external SSD, and the problem disapeared, but only for a while. After few hours, FPC freezes again on second disk.

It happens only when library is on external drive (Samsung T5 and Samsung T7).

I have a clean library, with one clip on timeline, without any effects and plugins applied.

It's happend on MacBook Pro 13 (2019) Intel, and also on iMac 27 5K (2019)

Looks like a virus or something?

The problem started on previously macOS Big Sur

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.6

Several things stand out from the report.

First of all - you have installed Chrome and its keystone daemons - these wreak havoc on professional applications like FCP.

See https://chromeisbad.com for how this happens and how to uninstall.

You will likely then have to reinstall FCP.

Also: you have a rotating hard drive that is more than 90% full. If this contains media that you are using, it will be an issue.

If it is not being used for editing, consider disconnecting it, and see how things go.

If it is, then this is probably a big cause for the slowdown. Hard drives are slow, and being virtually full severely impairs performance.

Looks like you've been upgrading your macOS in place for many, many years and have accumulated a decade's worth of cruft likely causing a software conflict. I think yours is the longest Etrecheck report I've seen.

It's unclear whether this Etrecheck report was done before you removed the keystone daemons, but they're in the report. You should reinstall FCP after completely removing Chrome and the keystone daemons using the instructions at https://chromeisbad.com

Honestly, the best thing you can do for your machine and sanity is to do a clean install to get rid of all the old cruft. It's possible this still won't solve the GoPro issue but your machine will be much happier. Here are good instructions from another forum member (possibly Luis?):

1) Make a full backup, preferably two: a Time Machine, and a full bootable clone, on a separate drive. You can use the free version of SuperDuper! to make this clone, or perhaps Carbon Copy Cloner.

NOTE: it is important to have more than one backup, since you're about to erase the main drive

2) Erase and install. I advise you to create an installer on a usb stick, to avoid having to install over the internet (slow).

Instructions here: How to create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support  How to create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support

NOTE: to erase, start from the usb installer disk, choose Disk Utility and erase the whole internal drive (not just the volumes inside); choose APFS with GUID Partition Map.

4) Quit Disk Utility and start the installation on the now empty drive

5) When asked if you want to transfer information, choose "From another mac, disk or Time Machine backup", and select the backup you made in step 1.

*** IMPORTANT: Migrate *ONLY* the user accounts (NOT applications, NOT settings, or other files) ***

6) Install any applications you really need, from the App Store or the respective developers' sites.

7) Enjoy your "new" Mac!

Just want to add that I have this problem but also some peculiar behavior —

the issue occurs on my MacBook Pro (13” 2020 Intel i7 model) but does NOT occur on my 2013 Mac Pro (dual D500 cards with custom 10 Core processor). I wonder if this is a conflict with the Intel or T2 chip in decoding the H.265 that the GoPro 1.30 firmware creates.

it also will not let me create proxy media if the files within Final Cut.

for reference, I’m on FCP X 10.6.1 and Monterrey 12.3. I’m working from a project that I edited without issue on my Mac Pro Saturday and now attempting to edit it on my MacBook results in a froze Final Cut, causing me to Force Quit to regain control.

I guess I could downgrade the camera but unfortunately, I’ve already started a project so re-importing those clips and replacing them in the timeline would be a PITA

If the issue was caused by Chrome and its keystone minions, yes, you should reinstall FCP.

I completely agree with terryb's assessment. Having done a sequence of migrations over such a long period, there are bound to be issues.

Starting fresh does not have to be painful. After installing, it is ok to migrate ONLY the user accounts, so you won't lose any documents, photos, etc. You will only need to install the applications.

Also: try doing a clean install on a separate SSD drive and test. This will let you keep working but also give you an idea of how much better your mac may behave

Just thought I would update-

1) 10.6.2 and a Pro Video Formats update released today and the issue remains

2) Apple called me yesterday to say they couldn't duplicate the issue but when I pressed, they said they attempted the tests on an M1-based MacBook. I reiterated that the issue appears to only happen on certain Intel MacBooks, specifically the 2020 i7 model, and asked that they continue testing. I then replicated the issue for them via remote connection and uploaded the FCP Library along with my Final Cut logs to their servers.

I'll let you know when I hear more.

FWIW -- as a work around, if you take the clips, drop them into Compressor, and transcode them to ProRes, they will then playback fine in Final Cut. I've only ever had this happen to me with corrupt video files in the past and I sadly think the solution will come from GoPro, who thus far has failed to reply to my open tech support case with them. Hopefully Apple has some kind of liaison to GoPro and they can help to sort this out.
