Final Cut Pro freezes constantly after every action

Hi!

MacOS Monterey 12.0.1

Final Cut Pro 10.6.1

Preferences cleared (CMD+OPT while starting FCP)

After doing anything in library, adding marker, adding clip on timeline, muting audio on clip, the Final Cut Pro freezes for 4-5 seconds.

I thought it's a bug on disk (because FCP saves every action that we made), so I moved footage and library to second external SSD, and the problem disapeared, but only for a while. After few hours, FPC freezes again on second disk.

It happens only when library is on external drive (Samsung T5 and Samsung T7).

I have a clean library, with one clip on timeline, without any effects and plugins applied.

It's happend on MacBook Pro 13 (2019) Intel, and also on iMac 27 5K (2019)

Looks like a virus or something?

The problem started on previously macOS Big Sur

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.6

Several things stand out from the report.

First of all - you have installed Chrome and its keystone daemons - these wreak havoc on professional applications like FCP.

See https://chromeisbad.com for how this happens and how to uninstall.

You will likely then have to reinstall FCP.

Also: you have a rotating hard drive that is more than 90% full. If this contains media that you are using, it will be an issue.

If it is not being used for editing, consider disconnecting it, and see how things go.

If it is, then this is probably a big cause for the slowdown. Hard drives are slow, and being virtually full severely impairs performance.

Skimming the media isn't very good in FCP, but that's often the case with compressed 4K media. No problem skimming 6K and 8K RED. The slomo 4K GoPro media plays correctly, as does other GoPro media. FCP doesn't lock up for me. I think I have basically the same computer as you.

I would recommend you first test a new admin user and see how that goes. If it still fails I would recommend a clean install of the OS migrating only users. Install FCP and test the application.

@kaicraig, if you're asking how to create proxies:

Create optimized and proxy files in Final Cut Pro - Apple Support

If that doesn't fix the issue, start a new discussion and, as Tom says, post an Etrecheck report from https://etrecheck.com which can provide information about what might be going on. Give the application Full Disk Access in Privacy System Preferences, and use the "Additional text" button at the bottom of the reply box to paste the copied report.

I have uninstalled Avast now, but the issue is still there. Maybe it has to do with an update of either my camera or MacOs or Final Cut Pro X.

The issue occurs when working with files from my GoPro HERO 10 (Firmware 1.16) in Final Cut Pro 10.6 and 10.6.1, installed on MacOS 12.01.

It did work with the same resolution files from my GoPro HERO 10 (Firmware 1.15) in Final Cut Pro 10.5.4 and macOS Big Sur.

I know that the Hero 10 is not yet listed in the supported cameras at FCP (https://support.apple.com/de-at/HT204203), however, as stated before, it worked perfectly until the updates. The error seems to not occur when trying video files from other cameras.

I can also provide an update on this. I still have the same issues with FCP 10.6.2 and Pro video formats 2.2.3, so I called Apple as well. I also uploaded FCP logs and a video showing my workflow and the problem. This time however, Apple did believe me. Maybe also because of the facts, that I have done several clean installs with macOS Monterey and Big Sur, which did not help, and that the Hero 10 is listed as a supported camera for FCP and iMovie and the problem does not occur on MacBooks with Apple-chips. So it seems as if FCP or MacBooks are able to deal with the files from the Hero 10, just not when there is an Intel inside. In the meantime, I also know from an MacBook Pro 2020 with Intel i5 chips, which has the same problem. I was promised to get feedback from Apple next week.

I have transcoded some files to ProRes as well, however, this is not an option to me as I am often shooting with more cameras and I lose all timestamps in the videos, which is a pain as the videos do not appear in the correct order after that in FCP. Maybe this doesn't happen with compressor, I just don't want to pay for that program. Furthermore, the file sizes is about 20x the original one. So I am hoping, there will be a solution without workarounds, but I appreciate, that you have mentioned it. Maybe it's an option for some users.

I'll keep you updated

Update: as stated above, the issue of FCP freezing did not occur with files from the GoPro HERO 10 (Firmware 1.15) in Final Cut Pro 10.5.4 and macOS Big Sur. I have now tried to import those "old" video files from the Gopro Hero 10 (Firmware 1.15) into Final Cut Pro 10.6.1, installed on MacOS 12.01. Result: no issue, no freezing! Those files are working! This means that there must be something changed in the Gopro Hero 10 Firmware 1.16, that FCP 10.6. and 10.6.1. can't deal with, at least on my MacBook Pro 2020. I do not believe it's an issue with MacOS 12.0.1 as I can still view and process the files in other programs such as the GoPro Player.

Hello,

I can guarantee, that the freezing problem of FCP doesn't have anything to do with Chrome or GoPro or... This is a bug which -I believe- we all didn't have until now. I have now a Mac Pro Late 2013 and a Mac Pro 2019 here (both with Big Sur). The 2019 one is newly purchased and is since 4-5 days in use. This machine has everything (FCP, Motion etc.) downloaded & clean-installed. And I had at least 7-8 freezes until now (in FCP). This freezing is not a sudden crash -as usual in FCP :)- but something else which Apple has to resolve. (My disks -2 thunderbolt + 1 SATA- are never filled more than ca. 60%. My footage is HD -not compressed 4K- or some .pngs, .jpgs... So there is nothing special in the process. I am using FCP since 7 and I am familiar with the behaviour of the SW. I insist that Apple has to accept that there is a problem with the last upgraded 1-2 versions of FCP or/and the combination of this SW & system upgrades. I had not such problems before.

Sorry for the long message. Thanks ahead for any help.

I am having the same issues as @Voltaic on the same model MacBook Pro (13” 2020 Intel i7 model), also with MacOS 12.3 and FCP 10.6.1. I tried a clean install of MacOS Big Sur 11.6.2 and only installed FCP 11.6.1 and I was having the same issues again. So even a downgrade and a clean install won‘t fix this. Also a clean install with MacOS 12.3 and then installing only FCP 10.6.1 did not help. I do not mind spending time on trying out anything that could help, but so far, I don’t know what else I could try. Note: I did/do not have Chrome installed.

Thank you for letting me/us know! This feedback is very helpful, at least to me as it confirms, it's an Apple issue!! It can't be a Gopro issue, otherwise it would not work on an older MacOs version. I have tried to explain the issue to Apple. I have written feedback within FCP, have sent them error reports, but I haven't received any feedback. Nothing at all. So I called them. Answer: it must be a Gopro issue. Thank you Apple! So they either did not want to talk about that or they didn't even manage to recreate it and confirm, that this issue exists, after weeks of people reporting about it. They even have the GoPro Hero 10 on their list of supported cameras for FCP and iMovie. If the next version of MacOS or FCP won't fix this issue, I will have to take their old slogan "think different" seriously and get a computer from another manufacturer, that allows me to do my work
