The badge app icon is gone on my mail app and when I go into the settings for mail app under notifications there is no switch anymore to turn the badge on or off.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. For an issue like this, let's try some basic steps first to get the Badges option back for you.
First, close the Settings app:"Double-click the Home button to show your most recently used apps. Swipe right or left to find the app that you want to close. Swipe up on the app's preview to close the app"
Next, Restart your iPhone.
"Press and hold the side button until the power-off slider appears.
Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo."
Open Settings again and see if the option to enable Badges appears. Restarting your iPhone often fixes issues like this.

Uninstalling the mail app and reinstalling did the trick for me as well! Thanks!
I had the exact same issue. I deleted the app itself and reinstalled it. That fixed the issue.
I fixed mine by removing the mail app and reinstalling. Note that you may have to re-enter your passwords.
I did all of these steps to no avail.
I’m all the way on iOS 16 and my badges still aren’t appearing. This is killing my work/office productivity
I had the same problem also caused by the pairing of an Apple Watch. Removing the Mail app and restarting the phone helped.
