The Monterey 12.4 Broke USB-C Charging

After upgrading to 12.4, my 2021 16-inch MacBook Pro w/M1 Pro CPU now doesn't charge from any USB-C ports. My usual USB-C charger stopped working and the MBP doesn't make a beep or indicate any reaction to the charger. I've tried another charger and cable that I know work. It will charge from the 140w supplied charger but not from USB-C?

I believe that there are enough instances of this occurring for Apple to know about it and like most companies are reluctant to admit a problem. I know a number of us have filed an issue with Apple tech support so hopefully getting a 3-year warranty is not going to be money wasted.

The USB-C issue seems to correct itself for a number of users, mine included, which tells me it's not something permanent. It could be an interaction between objects in the operating system that could somehow self-correct. Plus since the problem started in ver 12.x, it seems to indicate that a change/addition created the issue.

For the record, I also have a relatively brand new (less than 3 mos old) MBP and find that the USB-C ports intermittently "fail." This is true both for receiving charging, and also for acknowledging/charging accessories - Apple Watch, iPhone, 3rd party headset, etc. This morning I had the issue arise - sat down at the machine, put my watch and phone on chargers, belatedly realized neither was charging and the battery wasn't accepting charge - when literally the last thing I did before going to bed last night was to restart the machine, so all it did in the interim was reboot, reload a couple of programs I had running, and then go to sleep for the night.

Keep in mind if you have Optimized Charging checked (the default), the computer will not charge past 80% if it thinks you're going to keep it plugged in. So check the battery level before thinking that it's not charging. If you click on the battery icon, it should say that charging is delayed if this is the case.

Also try turning the USB-C connector upside down and plugging it back in to see if that makes a difference. Some USB-C cables are not fully wired and may not charge if plugged in backwards.

A lot of people, including myself have had issues with USB-C not charging but it seems to be intermittent. Be sure and upgrade to 12.4 if you haven't.

Thanks - I am at 12.4, I know about flipping the USB-C, and even when Optimized Charging is on (it's not), it will show that the charger is connected regardless of whether it's actively charging at the time. Unfortunately right now I'm at 75% battery (and dropping) and none of the USB ports recognize the charger in System Profile, even the one that will charge an accessory (2 of 3 will not recognize/charge an accessory but one will). It really seems like some kind of software or hardware issue. I did file a bug report with Apple but it sounds like people have been filing them and nothing so far?

I forgot if you mentioned it but does the computer charge with the MagSafe charger?

I'm sure Apple knows about it as I think I was one of the first to log a report with Apple on the USB-C charging issue several months ago. This is not a widespread problem and may be difficult for Apple to tie it down. I know in my case, switching to the MagSafe charger allowed me to charge my MBP and then the problem went away. I didn't do anything that I'm aware of to fix it and it's been working fine ever since as I never use my MagSafe charger.

That was the same experience I had. MagSafe worked fine yet USB-C didn't. I tried multiple chargers and cables with no joy. Then the problem went away and to my knowledge, I didn't do anything to fix it beyond multiple restarts.

Using early 12.x the USB-C charging worked fine but stopped working with 12.2 or 12.3. I don't remember which. Then I haven't seen the problem resurface.

Also, my "new" MBP went tango uniform and Apple had to basically replace all the electronics inside after 9 months of use. Before Monterey, I was experiencing a panic every morning when I first opened the lid. What I had found was that charging with the USB-C and closing the lid "sleep" caused a panic after a few minutes of charging. I have no idea if my later motherboard failure was tied to earlier panics using USB-C charging but it was interesting to note.

It's a known problem with 12.x and will often fix itself. My charging issue lasted one day before it somehow repaired itself?

Try the obvious and restart the computer.

Also assuming the charger and cable previously charged the MBP then turn the connector upside down and see if that helps. Some USB-C cables are not fully wired in both directions and are missing some connections.

Restarts seem to be the only thing that sorts the issue out for me, and it may be weeks, days, or even just hours before it reoccurs.

I have also had more frequent panics than I'd expect - I'll pay attention to see whether there's a USB-C charging association. I usually don't close the lid at night, so mine just looks like a refusal to wake from "sleep" in the morning.

What I found was that if I plugged in the charger and closed the lid and then opened the lid after 15-20 minutes it had panic'd. For me it seemed to be USB-C charging plus lid down or going to sleep. Recently Apple had to replace all of the electronic guts including the lid tilt switch and I'm not sure if that had anything to do with my problem. The repair was due to my MBP constantly rebooting and then failing to boot. At this point I don't know if any of the problems are/were related to USB-C charging. It has been charging off the USB-C port for a couple of weeks after the repair without an issue.
