AMC plus wont play video?

Hello! We tried watching Better Call Saul today on our new Apple TV and it said we were on airplay when we were not? We turned off air play in all of our devices and the tv itself and still couldn’t get the video to play…. Could hear the audio just fine… only seemed to be a problem with AMC plus…( i.e. all our other tv app/channels worked just fine) Any suggestions?

I am having the exact same issue. The program slides work and I click play, but then the screen goes dark and the icon says the video is playing via airplay. Pausing the video makes the still image appear, but hitting “play” makes it disappear and the icons comes back over a black screen. Very strange. And yes, other apps are working just fine. AMC+ is the only app that is doing this.

I wanted to use my Homepod with my Apple TV and work around AMC+ by launching it on my iPad and watching it on the big screen via Airplay. Which I did. However at some point, with no change by me (and presumably through an Apple TVOS update) I was forced to disconnect Homepod as my default Apple TV Speaker. An Apple TV message appeared telling me I "couldn't use Homepod, try re-connecting them." I'm pretty sure I tried unsuccessfully to reconnect once, and then gave up. Then AMC+ worked. Big surprise. Apple needs to figure out what to do with Homepods. They were great for watching Dune in stereo, but otherwise, I don't miss them so much. As for AMC+, now that Dark Wind is over, I don't expect to be using it at all.

All in all not a very high quality experience from any of the vendors involved. —Christo

I just use the AMC+ app and Airplay so my Homepods can also be used. I’ll use that until my subscription is up (received a discounted for annual) then I’ll subscribe via Amazon prime probably. This is really a pain as it all worked together when I was watching in May of this year. The AMC+ app obviously got updated and not in a good way!

It is now August 27th and the AMC+ app is still broken for anybody who uses HomePods as their audio output. I have found a workaround though that does not involve disabling or setting your HomePods as a temporary audio device. The trick is to open the AMC+ content you want to watch through the AppleTV app itself. The beauty of the app is that it’s does the translation to any other video apps you have installed but doesn’t actually use the app itself. So that means that AMC’s bad app coding for AirPlay detection doesn’t factor in. The AppleTV app will happily stream just the audio to your HomePods and everything works beautifully.

I can’t believe AMC hasn’t fixed this issue for 3 months now, or that Apple hasn’t pressured them to fix it since it’s excluding anybody who uses their HomePods as TV audio outputs.

At least this is a way to still enjoy the AMC+ content we are paying for though.

If you’re talking about the AppleTV + Channels, then yes you’re correct. However, some people pay for AMC+ via the AMC+ App because they got a better deal. I paid $26 for the entire year for AMC+ and unless you are willing to pay extra for watching AMC+ on AppleTV + then you won’t have access to what you’re describing.

Some people including myself don’t want to pay twice for something that is easily resolved with just a few steps, but for others who want more control than by all means use the channel app on AppleTV +.

You have 2 options. First you can do exactly what you suggested (cancel and re-subscribe) or Second you can use the workaround I posted in the thread above (also below).

But that’s assuming you also own an Apple device like an iPad or iPhone that has the Home App installed on it.

The easiest solution is to cancel and re-subscribe especially if you’re paying the same amount ($8.99).

Here’s the workaround that allows you to still use your HomePods.

Go to settings on your AppleTv.

Select Video and Audio

Select Audio Output

Select TV Speakers as your Default Audio Output

Scroll Down to Temporary Audio Output

By Default your TV Speakers Are selected.

Select your HomePods (Room - whatever you have this set to. Mine is set to “Main Bedroom”)

When you do this TV Speakers gets deselected.

Lastly, select TV speakers again.

Both should now be Checked off.

when you exit back one screen it should now say under Temporary Audio “Main Bedroom + Master” or something along those lines.

Now turn the TV volume all the way down and use the audio from the HomePods.

The Only downside is that you have to control the volume of the HomePods on the App or On the Speakers themselves, but if you don’t mind doing that then this works great.

It’s a workaround but doesn’t resolve the core issue. That’s on AMC. MLB app had the same problem at the beginning of the season. They got it fixed in a few weeks (which was way too long). That AMC is taking months is inexcusable. Last, taking pot shots at each other here does nothing but antagonize and stop any useful discussion. My free advice that’s worth what you paid for it.
