ios 16 photo import to Mojave

Anyone else experiencing the same problem trying to import photos to MacOS Mojave (10.14.16) form iOS 16? On plugging in my iPhone, I was asked to update iTunes (done) and restarted iTunes, but I get an error message "The operation couldn't be completed. (com.apple.ImageCaptureCore error -9956.)" and no images can be imported.

This will be problematic if I can't offload photos into my Mac!

Apparently, iOS 16.1 will be released in mid/late October. We'll have to exercise some patience until then. A Forbes article describes iOS 16 and 16.0.2 as very buggy. And 16.0.3 may come soon; before 16.1. https://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2022/09/23/apple-ios-1602-release-bug-fixes-iphone-security-update/?sh=6fee6ee150e0

Thanks for the update. But, unfortunately ibugOS16.0.2 didn't resolve the issue either. Hopefully Apple will fix it with 16.1, but I start to get the feeling they won't, just as they didn't back in the Snow Leopard days. (ah I miss SL, it was the best and no cloud crap either).

Oh well at least we have two options for now, either downgrade while you can to iOS15.7 or use AirDrop to transfer photos onto Mojave.

Another solution is to use a Mac with BigSur, Montery to download the photos into a shared folder or network storage using ImageCapture. This worked for me with my M1 MBP from work. Still not ideal as I like to keep work separate, but it beats having to select and AirDrop photos before dragging them out of the Downloads folder to import into Photos.

Similar situation here: everything was working fine until I upgraded iPhone to iOS 16. When I plugged the phone, Mac asked to download an update. After that now I get "The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.ImageCaptureCore error -9937.) (-9937)" when trying to import from Image Capture, regardless if I choose to keep original format or not. Image capture does show the thumbnails and iPhone didn't prompt to trust the computer. The pictures and videos I'm trying to import were taken before and after the upgrade to iOS 16 so it's not a file format issue

Old Macbook Pro with High Sierra 10.13.6.

Using AirDrop to transfer HEVC videos will take forever, and it might even auto convert it back to H.264 which is a no-no. So no workaround yet.

I agree, AirDrop is not an ideal alternative. I think the best solution for now, is to restore a the most recent iOS15 backup thru iTunes (if you made one from before upgrading to iOS16). 2nd best is to transfer photos using a mac with a newer OS, then copy and drag & drop them into Mojave's Photos or iPhoto.

If you have a recent iOS15 full backup made with iTunes, then reverting to iOS15.x is pretty quick and easy to downgrade. iOS 15.7 is good and feels snappier.

Downgrading iOS15.7 using the IPSW takes a long time and you will be required to configure and sync all data, email config, app data as it will not be able to restore backup data made with iOS16 onto iOS15.

iTunes still syncs to an iPhone with iOS16, but fails transferring from the iPhone with iOS16 to Mojave using iPhoto, Photos or Image capture.

Air Drop works with jpg, heif/heiv and dng files , you can open them and in photo app. Raw dng images photo app cannot process.

Adobe photoshop no problem with raw dng files. photo app need help :) I just upgraded the bluetooth card on mac pro 5.1

so am able to do airdrop. but really this needs to be addressed. There should be a way to copy photo's - movies to mac that doesn't have air drop, without having to use a windows computer. Only makes sense

Confirmed by experiment and reading other threads that AirDrop does convert the videos down to h.264 1080p, so there seems to be no way to copy the full HEVC videos right now unless you pay Apple for an iCloud subscription or a new laptop.

Wondering if there's any workaround using Windows? Last I checked it was a disaster: it converted everything, stamped some metadata to the files, and, even though it kept EXIFF data as-is, it overwrote the original creation/modification date of the video files (which I need in my studio scripts).

You may want to enable iCloud Drive on your iPhone, so you can save the photos and videos you want to transfer to your Mac pin a folder on iCloud Drive, then copy them from there to your Mac. Or, if you use iCloud Photos on the iPhone you can save selected photos as a shared folder on iCloud Drive and send the link to your Mac.

We are all barking up the wrong tree. The issue isn’t with iOS 16 necessarily, in that you may recall that when first connecting an iOS 16 device to your Mac, a file was required to update iTunes. I suspect that a file is equally required to reset permissions or otherwise tweak Photos.

My log files show some complex interaction with elements of the Photos app, and which appear to fail due to either authentication or permissions.

We won’t find a solution here: but everyone with the same issue that I’m experiencing should send a big report to Apple to encourage a resolution. Stepping back to iOS 15.7 won’t be a useful or practical solution for many as time goes on, and merely delays a forced fix by Apple.

The more bug reports, the more someone will actually pay attention!

Hi,

I'm on OSX Mojave with an iphone on iOS 16.0.2 and on my Mac Pro and Macbook Pro (OSX Mojave), both have the same import photo error using the Photo app.

On both Macs, I had my iphone add them as a trusted device. My iphone is synced to my Mac Pro too just for a "just in case" thing.

In the end, I had to run Windows 10 and drag all my videos/photos out and into Windows 10. Then from there, I had to transfer them to my Mac.

What a joke. The all mighty iphone. Haha.

Update

I also went to SYSTEM PREFERENCES > SECURITY & PRIVACY > FULL DISK ACCESS

and added Image Capture and the Photos app, giving them full access.

Also went to my Pictures folder and custom location folder for Image Capture to confirm my user account, along with the Admin, and Everyone, all have READ/WRITE privileges.

I am missing my Android now. That was so simple with zero restrictions and everything worked. It was a $150 ZTE Blade phone btw. I guess apple needs to hire some real programmers.

Is there a reason why you can't go back to your Android phone?

But this aside, Apple clearly dropped the ball with a now defunct for 3 years Mac operating system, yet which many users (i.e. us) still have in play.

At least the programmers (and quality assurance bods, more importantly) acknowledge the problem and will (allegedly) have a fix in a week or two. Can't ask much more than that, given the adoption rate of iOS 16.

That's 20+ years of operating systems (!), though technically, if we are being pedantic, the 'Mac OS' moniker arrived in 2016 with Sierra (10.12). Mojave had its 6th birthday last week.

The big change, though, was between v10.14 (Mojave) and v10.15 (Catalina), when iTunes was no longer used for backups and synchronisation. This seems to be why photo imports are failing.

It is only slightly surprising that Mojave was not road-tested in the development of the latest iOS, since most developers and programmers have their sights set on Ventura (MacOS 13) due to be released later this year.
