Since updating my iphone to ios16 I cannot import my photos on my iMac

I have an iPhone 11 pro which I have just updated to ios16. Since doing this I cannot import my photos into the Photos app. (iMac 2011 running High Sierra)

I get the following message for each photo and video:

"Some items cannot be added to your Photo library because they may be an unrecognizable file format or the file may not contain valid data." then the name of the file "IMG_xxxx.HEIC (IMG_xxxx.HEIC)" and then the reason "The operation couldn't be completed. (com.apple.ImageCaptureCore error -9937.)"

I vaguely recall having this issue when I first got this iPhone, but I cannot remember or find any details on how to correct it.

All help/guidance/suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Duff

This definitely is a bug with iOS16/High Sierra.

I have experienced the problem as well. I have iOS16 on an iPhone 8 and a mid 2010 iMac running High Sierra.

What I found was that I was able to import JPEG photos, but once I tried to import an HEIC photo, I would get the same error message you have described.

From that point onwards, I could then not import JPEGs either, with error message 9937 now showing the HEIC file replaced by JPEG as in "IMG_xxxx.JPEG (IMG_xxxx.JPEG)". Any future import process was then completely impossible for either file type.

I was able to revert back to successful import of JPEG files by connecting my iPad Air 2 which is running iOS 15.6, and downloading successfully by either importing from iPad in Photos, or ImageCapture. Reconnecting the iPhone then allowed JPEG imports again as well. But try an HEIC file again, and back to the problem of no imports of either file.

I have an 2020 iMac 24" as well, so when I connected the same iPhone which was double file corrupted by the above process in the 2010 iMac, I got the same error messages in the 2020 iMac. Connecting the iPad again, I was able to successfully import a JPEG photo (surprisingly I found that you cannot set the iPad Air 2 to capture in HEIC format, and I suspect this is a limitation of the device rather than the software version).

Reconnected the iPhone, and now the import of both HEIC and JPEG photos was restored. Yay working phone import again!

Summary:

  1. If you have the iOS16/ High Sierra combination, JPEG import should be OK. If you import HEIC, then neither file can be imported.
  2. If you can connect a device running an earlier version of iOS, the import function of JPEG's in Photos or ImageCapture can be restored on the device running iOS16.
  3. It seems the iPhone is "corrupted" in the process as evidenced by getting the same error messages on a newer iMac running a newer version of macOS.
  4. The iphone can be "corrected" for the newer macOS version iMac however, when procedure 2 is followed.
  5. As my iMacs are located 80km apart from each other, I have not yet been able to determine whether the same corrected iPhone will again be corrupted in the older iMac running the earlier macOS software. Rather than risk this all again, I have the luxury of time to wait for Apple to recognise this as a bug and possibly provide a fix. This is unlikely if it involves a fix for High Sierra, but most likely if iOS16 is at fault which this new forum topic seems to suggest.

Following up from my previous post... Just finished a 'chat' with Apple Support, they said that my Mac was too old, LOL. There was no answer when I explained iTunes still auto-updates on my Mac Pro 5,1 Mid 2012, Mojave 10.14.6, and that my current iTunes Version is 12.9.5.5 much higher that the one offered for downloads at the Apple Store. "Too many bells & whistles on these new iPhones for old Macs to handle," she said. My Mac's iTunes just backed up and updated my iPhone SE 2022 with no issues earlier today. I did send a submission and indicated this discussion thread. Hope 16.0.3 it's on it's way soon with a fix.

Thanks for the good info guys... in the meanwhile I've been using AirDrop and importing to Photos. Smooth, not time consuming, no errors whatsoever. Picture/movie info details remain. Otherwise the iPhone is functional except for iTunes and SMS issues (link available on my previous post) that I've been able to resolve by selecting Airplane mode 'on' and/or turning VPN off. I'll leave the iPhone alone until the next update. Not holding my breath.

I, too, with my 2012 5,1 Mac Pro am stopped at Mojave without resorting to patches, and such. With 32 Gb Ram, a 2 Tb SSD and 3 2Tb spinners for TM and backup clones, it's hard to justify a move. We also have a 27" iMac, an 11" MacBook Air and another MacBook with later OS's, but this MP is my workhorse.. One day a Sudio Mini, unless there is a really tempting new Mac Po in the future without breaking the bank.... Several applications to update if moving on, MacDraft, Photoshop, already subscribe to Office 365.. Just need to get his fixed!

I am having this problem also. I receive the error "The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.ImageCaptureCore error -9956.)" whenever I try to import MOST photos after upgrading to IOS16. I can't tell why it will import a few but not most of them. sometimes it imports jpeg, png, mp4 files... but it doesn't import most of the photos. it even doesnt import photos that have been imported in the past but removed from the Photos app.

This is kind of an outrageous flaw. Been using Apple products since 1988... i get bugs and all but, this one is really bad. Plus, its almost a month and still no fix... this really needs to be fixed faster! This always worked, and the upgrade ruined this.

running Mojave 10.14.16 on iMac

running IOS16.033 on iPhone SE

I have exactly this problem, very frustrating as I have two iMacs running High Sierra which I use for work.

I have spoken to Apple Support twice for a considerable length of time and they seem to be aware of the problem, but as yet nothing has changed, currently running iOS 16.0.2 on iPhone 11.

Also my Battery life on the iphone has halved after this update.

I can upload phots from the internet to the iMac and also from the iPhone to a Windows Computer with no problems.

Was considering buying a new iMac but definitley having second thoughts now!
