Apple ID password parameters

Why does my Apple ID password change field say "unacceptable characters" when it has the same characters as my previous password, just expanded?

It also says the password is too long when it is only 48 characters.

The issue with not being able to respond is most likely unrelated. If you are new to the forums, you have more stringent limitations on how often you can post. I don't know what the exact limits are (I don't believe that's public knowledge) but, if you try to respond to soon after your last post, you may see that sort of warning.

Or, the forum software is just being its usual persnickety self.

This is the only official information I can find about password parameters:

I also found this thread which is old:

maximum character length for Apple ID - Apple Community

No, that's not it. It tells me this when ever I try and enter a password longer than 32 characters, the old maximum.

Even I use FIPS compliment passwords that are over 32 characters with one symbol it gives me the same error. And these passwords are within the last published AID password parameters where you could only use 32 characters.

If I use this, as an example, it gives me one of two errors: &17$sKB2MXz7.#Xz )gw24F*PLgx^Ba%zX= Either too long or inappropriate characters. And that simply is not true.

And now this board is not allowing me to respond…

Neither link is any help.

More rejection fields. This screen capture from today.

I’m going to have to go back to some old and older hard drives to get the original specs for password. Last data I have is Upper and lower case, at least 1 number and one special character, 8 characters minimum, 32 maximum. But then prior to 2014 you could use spaces as a character, soo…

In your initial post, you said you got a notice that your password was too long when it was "only 48 characters". The best information I can find (and which I provided to you) says that 32 is the maximum length.

I have no memory of whether or not you could use space back in 2014, though I know that frequently, one is not allowed to use a space in passwords in, as my brother would say, "the modern era". And just because you could do something back in 2014 doesn't mean you can now. Things change.

Best of luck doing whatever it is you feel the need to do.

What I need to do is make my Apple ID password more secure by resetting my account password and not getting errors that tell me that the password is too long when it isn’t, and that characters are unacceptable when they are.

That no one here can point me to a link to an Apple webpage that makes clear what they want in a password is telling. Seemingly every secure site I use now allows up to a 64 character password for top notch security. So why doesn’t Apples own software and web pages allow this? All of the screenshots are from Settings and iCloud.
