iPhone 14 Notifications / text sounds not working¡

I am having this issue also. But I just figured it out that when I turned off my Bluetooth and my watch was no longer connected my message gave me a notification sound. NOW WHAT???

Try turning off Play Haptics in Ring Mode, Play Haptics in Silent Mode, and System Haptics. Let me know if it helps.

Then something is wrong, either with your hardware or software. I would start by un-pairing and re-pairing the watch.

Some suggested turning off your VPN. I read that if you turn off your VPN, it opens you up to security risks. When you are online it makes sure your data and privacy are protected. VPN encrypts all of your data.

I tried this.....unfortunately, it did not work. The only luck I've had is turning off bluetooth as others have stated, but that's not a long-term remedy as the functionality is nil when you have an Apple Watch & iPhone, or any other third-party bluetooth needs.

Try turning your phone to never lock it works

Set your phone to never lock and it with work so your screen is on all the time

I’m having the same notification problems on a brand new iPhone 14 pro iOS 16.0.2. No notification sounds at all on many apps. eg news sources not only 3rd party but Apple apps as well. No notifications at all on many apps. sound or otherwise. Some notifications sometimes on some apps. Rarely know of a new notification unless I physically check. Whole phone figured correctly. Apple Genius Bar checked all settings, rebooted etc. etc. and failed to solve the problem. Two and a half hours on the phone with Apple Care working long and hard but also failed to solve the problem. None of the fixes suggested on this thread, by Apple or anywhere else have worked for me. I’m not happy.

I have the same trouble and it is clear that the problem is with the software, but not with the phone settings, bc sometimes I’m getting sound notifications and sometimes not at all, so random.

Apple technicians, pls stop asking us to check our phone settings or suggesting flip the side mute switch, this is not our first iphone and we know exactly how it’s works and how it suppose to work. Raise this issue at the software developers level and fix this lag!

I have the same issue as well and getting no answers from Apple. There is a bug and they need to fix it. I’ve tried everything and reset my phone. Not getting sounds when I get a text message is driving me insane.

I just activated my new iPhone 14 Pro Max about a week ago and I am having the same issue. My phone is not sending the notification sounds when I have messages as well as many other apps while in the Lock Screen. All the settings are correct. I see I am not alone with this problem, when will there be a fix, you pay too much money for these expensive phones and it cannot provide you the basic feature you need on a daily basis.

I’m having a similar issue, I’ve been searching through all the threads I can find. This is my situation:

I have a Garmin watch constantly connected through Bluetooth to an iPhone 14 Pro Max. I’ve checked focus, the side switch, contacts are not muted, notification settings (endlessly), etc. I actually even did a factory reset, and started from a blank slate. I also have a MacBook Pro and iPad Pro that I forward messages to through my iPhone settings. I’m not sure if this is part of it or not, but it doesn't seem to be.

I also understand that the default behavior is for the phone to pass the notification to the smartwatch if you have one, which I do, even though it's not an Apple Watch.

I’ve only been testing iMessage by sending myself text messages from Google Voice, and asking one of my contacts, John, to text me.

Google Voice iMessage Test:

Bluetooth on, screen locked. No sound on iPhone, watch vibrates.

Bluetooth on screen unlocked: Sound on iPhone, watch vibrates.

Bluetooth off screen locked: Sound on iPhone, nothing on watch

Bluetooth off screen unlocked: Sound on iPhone, nothing on watch

All of those seem to make sense based on the design, however…

Test with John:

Honestly, this is the behavior I want, but what's driving me crazy is that it’s not consistent, I can’t figure out why John’s messages make a notification sound, but my google voice texts to myself do not. I've checked the settings on the contact card, and I don't see anything different. I also checked the conversation itself in iMessage, and it looks the same.

What's even stranger, is that every once in while the Google Voice texts I send to myself will make a sound on my iPhone and vibrate my watch, but I can't find a pattern to this one. It's very infrequent and seems random.

Also, other apps seem to make a sound and vibrate my watch. For instance, I use Outlook for work, it makes a sound on my phone and vibrates my watch every time as long as I don't have a do not disturb set.

If it's the design that the phone passes the notification to a smartwatch, I guess that makes sense, and I can try to live with that. But being on Garmin, I don't think I have the same notification options on my watch. But I prefer the Garmin watch because I use a Garmin head unit for cycling that connects to sensors on my bike. So I'm already in that ecosystem, and I like the training metrics.

Even still the fact that it's not consistent is really bothering me.

YES...Tech support told me the exact same thing last night! That is NOT how it worked on my XS Max.

Out of sheer desperation, I changed my notification for the watch to "custom" from "mirror my phone" and did a forced restart (reboot) of the watch. I am now getting notifications on the phone and watch - when they are both locked! Still, no sound on the phone when it's locked - but at least I'm getting the vibrating notifications on the watch, which is better than it was!

I got the 14pro about 3 weeks ago, and hadnt really noticed this until recently. I have tried everything and it doesnt work. However something very weird is happening when I turn off bluetooth to disconnect apple watch(like some people have suggested). So I do get the notification sound on my phone when I turn off bluetooth, however my watch still receives messages and calls, even with the bluetooth off. Im not sure how its possible or if its even safe. But it doesnt make sense to turn off bluetooth and not be able to use earpods or apple watch (even though for me its still connected) just to get notification alert on the phone. Apple please fix this mess!!!
