OK I can add to this. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max, my 14th iPhone as I have owned them all from day one.

It’s scratched. A lot.

Im very careful with my phones, and haven’t required a case or screen protector for at least the last 4 or 5 phones I’ve had.

my wife has my previous iPhone 13 Pro Max, which is a year older, treated exactly the same as my 14 and not scratched at all.

I raised this with Apple support a few days ago, They recommended a 50mile round to my nearest Apple Store.

That was today.

the ‘genius’ I spoke to (their term not mine) said two interesting things.

  1. Apple/Corning have traded shatter resistance for scratch resistance with iPhone 14 screens, so whilst the screen is much less likely to shatter if dropped, it is also much MORE likely to scratch.
  2. I know I never put anything else in the pocket my phone is in, my ‘genius’ told me a grain of sand in my pocket is enough to cause the scratches I have.

Mainly though, they said this is cosmetic damage and get lost.

No one could explain why I was advised to drive 50 miles and waste 2 hours of my life to hear this.

in summary, if you treat an iPhone 14 Promax carefully, like your previous phones that were fine, this one won’t be.

it REQUIRES a screen protector. In which case for a phone at this price point I would argue it should be factory supplied and fitted properly in a dust-free environment.

At the very least, contrary to the false claim on the Apple website that implies improved scratch and chip resistance they should warn this phone may not be as scratch resistant as previous models due to improved shatter performance.

I’m not arguing that improved shatter resistance at the expense of scratch resistance is bad or wrong, just that Apple need to tell us this before a £1,400 phone is scratched - not after.

had I know this, I would of course have fitted a screen protector on purchase, up to now I never needed one and that is my point.

Im not done with this and have raised a complaint with Apple about this.

BTW two separate people from Apple today (one in the store, one on phone support) both said the same thing about shatter v scratch, so it’s obviously widely known to Apple staff, who knew this in user land? I certainly didn’t.

Hey Nick, I’m sorry hear about you experience and 50 miles disappointing trip an Apple Store.

We’re all here have or are experiencing same with iPhone 14 screen. I’m have 14pro.

I’m aware that there are couple of people on this chat most likely paid by apple to divert the attention away from this issue but if you decide to take the legal route, I will be very happy to support you and I’m sure other people I’m this chat will do too.

Generally apple support is very good, so will speak to them too and share my findings here too.

Thanks for sharing your unpleasant experiencing.

If you post what you’ve done in attempt to get some kind of resolve - your post will be removed.

I have never needed any kind of screen protector with any iPhone ever owned.

The most infuriating part of it all is that Apple KNOWS this is an issue and yet there was NEVER any suggestion to get a cheap after market screen sticker to protect my $1,400 phone that I will use for the unknown amount of time I have this thing.

LOL. No answer required. Was just adding to what you wrote. What we senior members of the forum know with 100% certainty is EVERY single year when the new iPhone is released, multiple threads will pop up from people who are upset their iPhone screen has scratches. EVERY NEW iPhone released. That's why I find it hard to understand the people who seem to think this is new and somehow different. It simply isn't.

Hi.

This thread is concerning. Do we think iPhone 14 marks / scratches easier than previous models?

I’ve had 4 previous iPhone models and none have ever had a mark on the screen, without a protector. The other day I noticed a dozen marks near the top of my iPhone 14 PM. No idea how they got there, but **** annoying.

Spent an hour to Apple on support chat, sending photos etc.. only to hit a brick wall at the end of it. Total waste of time.

my main worry is that the screen will be littered with hairline scratches over its lifetime.

what’s going on?

It’s ridiculous how easily the iPhone 14 screen is getting scratched. How can you produce a phone this expensive, and say that this is the strongest type of glass you’ve ever put in a phone while actually it’s a horrible choice of material?

I truly hope that Apple will come up with a replacement plan for this type of screen… Definitely disappointed and would have chosen a different phone instead if I knew this in advance.

Is there a possibility to swap out parts through the Apple Care plan for this?

Why would this phone not be recalled and replaced immediately? This has been a mess with purchasing an apple through Spectrum (which I usually just buy through apple), and now the phone not responding (face recognition doesn't work), messages don't come through, phone calls don't come through? Why is this not a recalled item? We see 1290 people with he same problem? Well each of us should not be paying $1,000.00 for a phone that is nonfunctional and you being aware of it.
