OK I can add to this. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max, my 14th iPhone as I have owned them all from day one.
It’s scratched. A lot.
Im very careful with my phones, and haven’t required a case or screen protector for at least the last 4 or 5 phones I’ve had.
my wife has my previous iPhone 13 Pro Max, which is a year older, treated exactly the same as my 14 and not scratched at all.
I raised this with Apple support a few days ago, They recommended a 50mile round to my nearest Apple Store.
That was today.
the ‘genius’ I spoke to (their term not mine) said two interesting things.
Mainly though, they said this is cosmetic damage and get lost.
No one could explain why I was advised to drive 50 miles and waste 2 hours of my life to hear this.
in summary, if you treat an iPhone 14 Promax carefully, like your previous phones that were fine, this one won’t be.
it REQUIRES a screen protector. In which case for a phone at this price point I would argue it should be factory supplied and fitted properly in a dust-free environment.
At the very least, contrary to the false claim on the Apple website that implies improved scratch and chip resistance they should warn this phone may not be as scratch resistant as previous models due to improved shatter performance.
I’m not arguing that improved shatter resistance at the expense of scratch resistance is bad or wrong, just that Apple need to tell us this before a £1,400 phone is scratched - not after.
had I know this, I would of course have fitted a screen protector on purchase, up to now I never needed one and that is my point.
Im not done with this and have raised a complaint with Apple about this.
BTW two separate people from Apple today (one in the store, one on phone support) both said the same thing about shatter v scratch, so it’s obviously widely known to Apple staff, who knew this in user land? I certainly didn’t.

Apple does not help with or cover cosmetic damage.
Yeah it's been bad, mine is 2 months old and has more scratches by far then my 12 pro max had in 2 years. I keep in in my pocket alone with nothing else.
disappointed in my 14 pro max
2 days and its scratched beyond belief. My 2year old iP13 work phone with no screen protector is comparatively flawless.
Frankly this is the last time I 'upgrade' an Apple device. Quality is going down the drain.
Same. Less than 24 hours. I haven’t left the house mostly been sitting around in bed or on the couch and already have a scratch. I have not dropped it or put it in a pocket or anything. I am so sick of their claims.
Same, my new 14 plus wasn't cheap, and i dont want to risk not being able to trade in in a few years. mine even came with a noticeable scratch (not the biggest deal but like i said, i want to trade it in later on)
I wish I knew this so could buy the protector with the purchase but I never thought this would be case since I never used any protector for my last like 5-6 iPhones because I always take care of my stuff
Hey Dogcow-Moof
You have always had a screenprotector on your iPhones. Therefore you have no experience with the scratching of the screens of the different versions iPhone.
I have never had a screenprotector on any of my previous iPhones. And so have many in this thread. Scratching was never a problem, until the 14 Pro.
This thread is about scratching, not about preventing it, and it is not about screenprotectors. You have made your screenprotector point many times now. Please refrain from posting in this thread about screenprotectors. You are not helping the discussion. Thank you.

What is a car bra?? 😂 I have nothing on my car bumper and it has no scratches, you just need to avoid bumping into things with your car.

A € 1500 iPhone with screenprotector is ridicuous. A simple soul cannot apply the protector without losing all that the superior iPhone screen has to offer.
If a protector is necesary, then Apple should apply it from the factory. Applying it afterwards gives bad results. Air pockets, dust particles, etc.
Apple is wrong, and you should acknowledge this, instead of pointing to the screen protector. The screen protector is not a solution. It is a cheap way of sending customers in to the dark!
A screen protector degrades the user experience, the screen is less clear, less reactive, full of air patches. It is not what Apple had in mind for their customers. It can never be the advised route to happiness. This forum should stop advertising it. And if they do, there
must be a financial thing going on ...

No no no, stop the car analogy, this is about an iPhone not a car, cars have nothing to do with this.
Apple charges almost € 50 for the silly screen protector that can be bought everywhere else for half price.
bubbles, dust, patches all-inclusive. Even Apple personnel cannot apply the protector without patches.
These silly protectors reduce the renowned Apple experience so much.
I have never had scratches. They only happened since the 14 pro. But you do not know because you always had the silly screen protector...
Start listening to the people here !!!!!!!!!

Has anyone successfully buffed out scratches!? Without having screen replacement? And if yes what and how please! Have had 3 days and scratches! Was waiting to get screen protector delivered,,,,Haven't tried to move it - so not sure how it even got scratched! Very disappointing for price !
Same issue.
screen protector is being shipped in the mail. Been super careful in the 2 days without has only been in pocket and now has scratches. Wondering if I should get apple care and replace screen before I add a protective layer. Should come with a quality screen protector if it is this necessary to keep in good condition.
Apple doesn't sell an "authentic" screen protector; all screen protectors available are from third parties.
Also, screens don't get damaged through a screen protector unless the screen protector itself is heavily damaged, in which case the damage would have been even more severe without the protector.
