OK I can add to this. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max, my 14th iPhone as I have owned them all from day one.
It’s scratched. A lot.
Im very careful with my phones, and haven’t required a case or screen protector for at least the last 4 or 5 phones I’ve had.
my wife has my previous iPhone 13 Pro Max, which is a year older, treated exactly the same as my 14 and not scratched at all.
I raised this with Apple support a few days ago, They recommended a 50mile round to my nearest Apple Store.
That was today.
the ‘genius’ I spoke to (their term not mine) said two interesting things.
Mainly though, they said this is cosmetic damage and get lost.
No one could explain why I was advised to drive 50 miles and waste 2 hours of my life to hear this.
in summary, if you treat an iPhone 14 Promax carefully, like your previous phones that were fine, this one won’t be.
it REQUIRES a screen protector. In which case for a phone at this price point I would argue it should be factory supplied and fitted properly in a dust-free environment.
At the very least, contrary to the false claim on the Apple website that implies improved scratch and chip resistance they should warn this phone may not be as scratch resistant as previous models due to improved shatter performance.
I’m not arguing that improved shatter resistance at the expense of scratch resistance is bad or wrong, just that Apple need to tell us this before a £1,400 phone is scratched - not after.
had I know this, I would of course have fitted a screen protector on purchase, up to now I never needed one and that is my point.
Im not done with this and have raised a complaint with Apple about this.
BTW two separate people from Apple today (one in the store, one on phone support) both said the same thing about shatter v scratch, so it’s obviously widely known to Apple staff, who knew this in user land? I certainly didn’t.

Turn your pockets inside out.
Odds are there is something in there that could scratch your phone display.
Regardless, a $30 screen protector would have prevented it from happening.
There is no better glass.
You use a screen protector because despite being scratch resistant, scratches can still occur.
It's like not washing or waxing your car because the paint is clear coated.
Because it's a risk you took by not choosing to apply a screen protector at the time of purchase.
Is Ceramic Shield slightly softer than the glass used on models before the iPhone 12? Ever so slightly, but that also makes it much less prone to shatter than older iPhone glass was.
There's a trade-off between being impervious to scratches and being likely to shatter.
Having said that, independent tests have shown that the iPhone 14 glass is roughly a Mohs 6, pretty much the same as the iPhone 11's.

I've had almost every generation of Iphone, this Iphone 14 Pro Max has more scratches on it's glass then I've ever had on any of my devices, It's just crazy.. It's always in my pocket or on my table with Apples Silicon case.
Unacceptable, It's so bad i want to replace my front screen...
Make an appointment with your local Apple Store; they will determine whether it is a defective screen or if there is a charge and will tell you the price.

Independent tests show the glass has the same scratch resistance as iPhone 13, 12, 11, and X (and XS).
If you feel it is defective, take your phone in to be examined:

I haven't used an iPhone without a screen protector, ever.

That's not accurate; some who are very careful with their phones have not experienced any scratching.

Again, given how many different protectors are on the market to meet disparate needs, I wouldn't want to pay for a protector I am going to immediately replace with my own.

It's known in the industry overall, that's why I keep quoting the article The Verge wrote about it (and about Samsungs, not about iPhones at all) in 2018:
The Verge: Why your brand-new smartphone will scratch just as easily as your old one
Hello ~ I am posting what I have done. Every single Apple device I have ever owned right out of the box has had a case ,screen protector, camera protector and back glass protector (if applicable) Period. I have never had any damage to screen, finish or back glass (on iPhone.) I look at it from the point of view of insurance. I am extremely hard on my devices due to a physical disability and do all I can to keep them protected. I am not against you only advising it may be best to add a screen protector. Same discussion on many of the android forums.

Exactly.
I've mentioned previously that tests have shown that the iPhone cover glass is around a Mohs 6.5 - meaning that only materials higher in hardness, like quartz at 7, will scratch it, while materials softer, like a normal knife (5.5) or a copper penny (3.5) will not.
Most pocket grit is sand or gravel, the most common element of which is silica, in the form of… quartz.

I've decided that one of the worst things you can do with a phone is keep it in a pocket. Fluff gets lodged in the charging port, grit scratches the screen, damage occurs when you sit on it, it falls in the loo when you drop your trousers.
Likely just bad luck on your part.
Independent tests have shown the iPhone 12 (and 13 and 14) all have the same Mohs hardness and thus the same scratch resistance.
If you feel your phone is perhaps defective, make an appointment to have it examined; Apple is the sole arbiter in this matter:

I’m seeing the same thing. There are lots of replies, but I haven’t seen a single remedy.
That's because there is no remedy. Either put a screen protector on your iPhone screen, or accept that no one has yet invented glass which can't be scratched and without protecting your expensive screen, you will likely see more scratches.
You can go to your Apple Store and they can install the Belkin screen protector. You can go to your closest BestBuy store and they have multiple brands. But if you want to buy one from Amazon, I highly recommend the Spigen Screen Protector, which includes a very easy and foolproof installation tray --> https://www.amazon.com/Spigen-Tempered-Protector-designed-Friendly/dp/B0B244R4KB/ref=sr_1_3?crid=152PDDG9VHV6O&keywords=spigen+screen+protector+iphone+14+pro&qid=1688836520&sprefix=spigen+screen+%2Caps%2C112&sr=8-3
It's not faulty.
If you didn't have a screen protector applied, the phone came in contact with something that damaged the screen.
I won't even turn on a new iPhone for the first time without a screen protector applied.
It doesn’t matter what the reviewers are saying. It’s just down to the simple fact that you see a lot of people complaining about the iPhone 14 screen and even though it’s at the same durability, it’s proven that ceramic shield scratches easier than normal glass, but breaks less which is good but if you’re trying to trade your phone in you might have problems I love my 14+ but you can’t deny that it gets scratched way easier than the seven just more experience I’ve had my 7+ for over six years and only have 2 to 3 noticeable scratches and I’ve only had my 14+ for less than three months and there’s already three scratches plus some other specs. And some people don’t want to get a screen protector because the iPhone 14’s screen is smudge proof which is really really nice and you’d have to pay more money for a protector that’s similar some people wanna do that for some people don’t and almost people who don’t and I didn’t need it for the seven so I shouldn’t need it for the 14 but I guess have to look into it or then I won’t be able to trade my phone in in a few years.
I have noticed the same thing. I’ve had many iPhones and the screens were durable. There is a clear difference with this iPhone 14 pro max. 1 week and has many light scratch pocket use only no drops.
def buying a screen protector for this one
