Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

I have read this thread and the procedure outlined here by Geoff https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/printing-with-icc-profile-from-lrc-looks-terrible-but-quot-managed-by-printer-quot-looks-good/m-p/13525618#M308338 I think this makes sense. I seem to have been led astray, as have many others, by the changes in the printer interface, to define and save things in the wrong pace, thereby causing conflicts between settings. Geoff's procedure helps to do steps in the right order and avoid settings to revert to default etc. So you can get your printing done.

The fact that you need such guidance to avoid losing settings you had already defined or ICC profiles not being used or LR crashing only proves the print setup has been completely messed up.

What really helped me was the point underlined in this other discussion a.o. by digitaldog: that you should choose your profile in LR and not choose it (again) in printer settings. Because it is LR that handles color management and consequently the printer doesn't -so no printer-ICC-profiles need to be set.

Of course, the whole setup and the interface are too confusing in this respect, it really is a mess. But Geoff's instructions helped me to understand and find a way out of the wood. He also uses an M1 Mac mini so I would think that what works for him should also work for you. But perhaps logical thought doesn't apply here :-)

For me it was encouraging that he uses the same -old- printer I use. Good to know that the printer doesn't have anything to do with the problems we experience. I'm confident I will now be able to do my printing -very relieved, for the prospect of the alternative (downgrading ) wasn't very attractive.

I hope you can get it sorted out to - good luck!

No, there has been no update or fix from Apple! There are workarounds for applying the proper ICC profiles for your printer and paper combination, but you will need to read through this thread and related links.

As for no access to the print dialog box, it is not clear to me what is happening with your system. The first thing you need to do is go to settings, printers and scanners and make sure your Canon printer driver is installed. You must use the Canon driver. Do not let Apple install a driver. If you don't see your printer listed, go to Canon's site and download the driver for your printer for the Ventura operating system. That driver should included printer profiles for Canon papers if you are using those. If you are using other papers you will need to get those ICC paper profiles from the paper manufacturer.

So the problem with Ventura is applying the correct printer/paper ICC profiles and related settings and having those settings remembered. You have to follow the correct procedure. If you are using PS and LR, this topic is also covered over in the Adobe user forums and other photo print related forums. Apple has a new OS coming soon which I would hope fixes some of the photo printing issues, but personally I doubt it. I don't think they are listening to us.

Thank you.

Can you add more specifics? What type of printer, vendor or AirPrint? Where are you changing the paper type? In Media & Quality?

When you say "exit and then go back in, the paper size has reverted to the default", what's the settings of the presets menu? Just making sure it's not set to the default. This is probably a legitimate bug, but maybe I can see if there's a workaround by following the precise steps.

Hi John

Thanx for the quick response. I have the same problem with paper handling ..On the earlier versions, os 11 , 10.15 and earlier, would save the full preset(all settings that I selected) my work around now is to use Cups and save my defaults. So now instead of having 6 different presets, I have 6 different print drivers.. this is using the genuine print driver, not the air-print driver..

I first heard about the presets not saving when I watched a tutorial by Hudson Henry on the On1 Photo Plus web site. He gave viewers a "heads up" that the print settings preset did not work in Ventura. I then verified this. Since then I'm reading about the problem in various places.

I have the secondary and really major problem that the drivers is somehow not using the correct ICC profiles for printing. My prints are lacking in contrast and deep blacks. This also seems to be an issue that others are having.

Unfortunately I never did any photo printing from Big Sur before I updated my Mac Mini M1 to Ventura, so I don't know how the Epson print driver worked with it. All my previous printing was done on my Windows 10 PC and my prints always looked like what I saw on my calibrated monitor and with soft proofing. So I did a comparison of a sample print with Windows 10 and Ventura and verified Ventura isn't printing with the correct (selected) ICC profile. And yes, it is upsetting that neither Epson or Apple acknowledge that there is a problem. Epson support wanted to see my nozzle check prints etc! :-). Of course as for the print quality problem, I can't rule out that I am doing something wrong when printing in Ventura, but I've gone over my settings multiple times and can't find any error. Not saving my presets does not help of course.

Well that means support is indeed reading these posts, so someone is aware that we are having these issues! I did read your message about rolling back to Monterey. Thank you!

I installed Qimage One and am able to get good prints now with the correct profiles. Don't need to worry about print presets in Ventura. Qimage does that for me. Shouldn't have to use a work around whether rolling back to a previous OS or installing third party print software. Apple should just fix the print module in Ventura!

Thank you @theaudiodoc for your complete report of your experience. Funny that my post is no longer on this page, I don't know how that happened. But then as this thread proves there are many thing happening we don't understand :-)

I updated to Ventura from Mac Catalina, and with Catalina everything worked fine -presets, printer settings, I had it all organized and it worked perfectly. Provided, as you mention, that you use drivers from the printer manufacturer (that in itself is a maddening thing: why should Apple in its arrogance silently replace original printer drivers with their own versions -who asked for this? When for some reason you re-install a printer you may fall into this trap any time.) So I share your frustration, only in your case I think it's probably worse, switching to Mac and ending up in this swamp.

From what you write it is clear there is no solution, not even with external software like Qimage. As I may have to do quite a lot of printing the coming month I think I'll downgrade to the oldest supported OS version, perhaps even Catalina. At least I can then rely on my system to do what it is supposed to do. I also have a fairly old printer, a Stylus Pro 3880, so yes, I agree, possibly these old printers may be abandoned by Epson and we shouldn't count on updated drivers.

To me too it is incredible that these problems occurred in the first place - the only application that seems to handle printing almost as you would expect is Preview (I can save custom settings there and when I choose a custom preset the settings are correct; but I have to make this choice for every single print as the thing always reverts to 'none' instead of keeping the latest settings). It is as if Apple developers only tested printing for a few Apple programs. What I find even more shocking is that this has now been going on for half a year! Half a year during which people could not properly use their printers on which they are dependent for work, orders, assigments.. And not a word from Apple...

Have the same problem, if i go to:

1- printer options

2- Paper Feed

3- select tray 4 ( for example) I have my silk paper in this tray...

4- save this as a All printers- Print Job Preset ( call it Tray 4)

5- press print and it prints from Tray 4

Open another PDF and choose the :

Tray 4 preset

and my Paper feed Preset has reset itself to Auto Select

I Have Ventura 13.1

Has there been a fix for the Printing Preset problem? We depend on this feature for our community college digital printing lab. We are running the latest version of Ventura and are connect via USB to Epson P5000, 6000, 7000 printers, printing from Adobe PS or LR. We have been using Mac Printing Presets created in the Mac OS Print dialogue box for years. Nothing saves, custom paper size, and especially irksome is the inability to save Printer Options>Printer Settings> Media Type or Adv B/W, etc. etc.

Is reverting back to Catalina the only fix?

Mar 31, 2023 12:48 PM in response to Moorbus

You probably don't need to revert all the way to Catalina. Mac OS Monterey works fine for Mac Pro printing to my HP Z9+ and Epson P600. Before that I was using Catalina on the tower computer, and Mojave on my MacBook Pro laptop for calibrating the HP printer because HP's DesignJet utility was not fully functional with Catalina for over 2 years. Finally HP released an update this year that works with newer than Mojave Mac OS, and I have found Monterey to be a nice upgrade to the original Catalina that was loaded on my Mac Pro. Unfortunately, I upgraded my personal and work laptops to Ventura, so pretty soon I will wipe the personal one and install Monterey on it too.

So I would recommend either wiping and reinstalling Catalina from an old backup or wiping and rebuilding as Monterey. I can't believe Apple screwed this up so badly.

I am having the same problem: unable to change or save printer settings. Ventura 13.3.1 on a Mac Mini M2 Pro, printing to Epson 3880 using Epson driver 12.62, printing from Photoshop with "Color Handling: Photoshop Manages Color". In the Print Settings dialog, "Printer Options > Color Matching" selector is grayed out with "Epson Color Controls" selected. I am able to change settings in the "Printer Settings > Basic" panel (e.g. High Speed), but when I click Save from Print Settings and go back into Print Settings again, my changes have reverted back to their old values.

Oddly, if I instead select "Color Handling: Printer Manages Color", then the "Printer Options > Color Matching" selector is not grayed out and I can change it from Epson Color Controls to ColorSync. This setting of course does not stick, but the inverted disable behavior of this selector might give a hint about where the bug is.

Just my personal opinion, but I think they know about these problems with the print module, but either can't fix them, or there is not enough noise being generated! After all, how many Mac users are printing photos to photo printers? Searching for info, either video tutorials or printed info, it seems more of them are using Windows rather than Mac.

Also, I have been informed by a print software developer that hey have been in touch with Apple in regards to these Ventura bugs so Apple for sure knows about them.

Not knowing the nuts and bolts myself of fixing bugs like this, it may just be them saving face by not admitting to problems with the print module or they don't want to invest the resources to fix them.

I have to admit most everything else with my Apple devices work fine other than external drives connected to my Mac Mini M1 being dumped/corrupted if I don't manually eject them before shutting down, or rebooting.

I think I've mentioned before, but I thought I was leaving this buggy stuff behind migrating from Microsoft to Apple! :-). Such is life!

Apple Support unhelpfully removed a reply to this thread I put up with directions and link on reverting to Monterey from Ventura. The reason they cited was that this is a security risk. Well, it could be if you do it wrong, and leave the option to boot from an external drive still enabled after you reinstall Monterey. Make sure to re-enable boot security if you do this, especially with laptops or machines in public spaces. You can google how to down-date a Mac, and it is not as straightforward as it used to be, but you can do it safely and migrate back all your data from a cloned backup or Time Machine backup of Ventura OS. I won't post a link but a site called AppleToolBox has very good protocols.
