OK, I won’t repost it again. Instead I will post the official Apple Support article from the support Knowledge Base that I copied it verbatim from→Use Always-On display with your iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max - Apple Support
Hi John2805 I think I can help you

just did a chat with apple support and turning off is the way it was intended to operate. Hopefully apple listens to user feedback and allows us to set it to "Always On". Just like Apple to give us a feature we have wanted for years but not give it to us the way we wanted it. Gotta laugh.
I did a clean install of iOS 17 without restoring from backup. So far, my AOD has remained on. (On iOS 16, it seemed to be off for the majority of my waking hours.) It’s also entirely plausible that not enough time has passed for the algorithm to screw with the AOD.
Same thing happened to my iPhone 14 pro. Before iOS 16.2 the AOD would never turn off (with the exceptions being the 8 scenarios that Apple lists on their support). But after the update, especially at night, the AOD would turn off after about 30 seconds of no use. Regardless of what the AOD settings are (on/off, wallpaper, notification, etc).
Same here - there always-on display was one of the features that made me buy this phone to begin with. I’m growing tired of iOS updates screwing things up.
Have any of you tried erasing the phone and restoring from backup? Apple Support suggested trying it, but that’s hours of “work” and I’m not very optimistic that it would fix anything.
Why can’t you address somebody at Apple directly? There are many ways, but this user-to-user forum is not one of them.
Like just about every large company Apple has both formal technical support and an area where users can discuss technical issues with other users. And, like all of those other companies, Apple does not participate in any significant way in the user-to-user discussions, as that might inhibit the free flow of ideas. The formal name of this area is Apple Support Communities. The “Communities” should be a giveaway that this isn’t a formal support site. And if that doesn’t, the site itself is https://discussions.apple.com. The “discussions” is another giveaway.
Apple’s formal support can be reached several ways:
Note that both of the above have options to receive a callback or chat
About the only communications method not used by Apple support is inbound email, probably because the volume would be overwhelming, and separating the wheat from the chaff (or, to us engineers, a poor signal to noise ratio) would be almost impossible.

1. I had the same problem for weeks. Even made a trip to the Genius Bar. Then, after half a dozen calls to Apple Support with no luck, someone on Twitter actually gave me the perfect solution and it’s worked perfectly ever since. It’s called a Hard Restart. Here are the steps to take.
Push & release the volume up button quickly.
2. Then the volume down button.
3. Then press and hold the button on the right until the Apple logo appears.
4. Then presto, it’s done.
I have the 14 Pro and hope this helps.
One other note: After the reset I placed my phone on the charger for a couple of minutes and watched until the Always On Display appears again and it’s still working perfectly.
1) Thank you but I know how to force restart a phone and 2) I don't have this problem. Perhaps you meant to reply to someone else?

Probably my issue is related to the Sleep Focus setting. I do have this turned on because I don’t want calls or texts coming in (except emergency contacts) at night. However, I do want to be able to look at my phone that is charging on my nightstand and be able to see the time. I can understand why some people would not want this and they should be able to turn off the “always on” display feature, but I want the display on ( at an appropriately dim night setting) when I have specifically set my iPhone 14 pro max to have the display always on. Sleep mode should not automatically disregard this setting.
That sounds like a reasonable theory. You can let Apple know you'd like them to do something different here:
What I do (as I don't have a phone with an always on display) is ask Siri what time it is.
Does everyone here who has issues with the AOD also have an Apple Watch?
It seems my iPhone AOD tends to remain on when I am not wearing my Apple Watch. I’m wondering if the algorithm that determines proximity is wrong. (If you have an Apple Watch, the AOD is supposed to turn off when you leave the room. It could be incorrectly determining our proximity to our iPhone.)
On my (just rec’d 2 days ago) iPhone 14 Pro iOS 16.3 , I find it seems to stay on if I do not use any focus modes.
and I am not too keen on the way they do focus mode anyway.
So far with iOS 17 the AOD of my iPhone 14 Pro Max has remained on. I completely restored my phone and did not restore from backup.
Lawrence, sorry bud but you don’t understand what’s happening. There is clearly an issue that prevents the screen from staying on.
As an example, at 8pm every evening until about midnight, my screen turns off no matter what I’m doing. Specifically, I’m doing the exact same activities and it turns off. That has nothing to do with expected behavior of when the phone isn’t being used.
I did my own test and manually changed the time in the phone to 4pm and the AOD worked as intended. So there is quite clearly a bug.
Why is this an issue? Because I work til midnight very often, and having the screen go off is annoying considering it’s a feature I bought the phone for.
None of the issues you list can explain why the phone operates one way before 8pm and differently after 8pm.
Same issue for me. Screen turns off after 1min max at night time specially when the room is dark. I suspect the algorithm stating "if is dark and late, the accelerometer sensor reporting no motion, the guy is sleeping ..so turn it off !"

APPLE, CAN YOU HEAR US!?!
No, not in this user-to-user forum. If you want Apple to hear you use this link→Product Feedback - Apple or use the Support button in the top bar on this page to talk to or online chat with a live Apple support specialist.
