Where’s the option to enable it ANYWAY?
I specifically bought this iPhone for the ALWAYS ON Display, obviously Apple doesn’t actually “know” when I don’t need it - because I keep noticing it being turned off when I wanted it on! Which is, ALWAYS!!
I came back to Apple after years. I just got the iPhone 14 pro max and now I’m dealing with the same crap as before. I simply didn’t have issues like this with my Samsung. This is an important feature for me. This is very frustrating.

Same here. Really annoying. Got rid of my bedside clock due to this feature being so useful. Now that AOD is not actually on, I can’t see the time when I wake up in the middle of the night and so I must get another bedside clock. Thanks for that…
"Hey, Siri, what time is it?"
Mine started magically working recently, even though I'm still on 6.3.1. Perhaps it had to relearn my usage habits? No idea, just glad it seems to be working again, at least for my iPhone 14 Pro. Hopefully they sort this out for others soon!

1. I had the same problem for weeks. Even made a trip to the Genius Bar. Then, after half a dozen calls to Apple Support with no luck, someone on Twitter actually gave me the perfect solution and it’s worked perfectly ever since. It’s called a Hard Restart. Here are the steps to take.
Push & release the volume up button quickly.
2. Then the volume down button.
3. Then press and hold the button on the right until the Apple logo appears.
4. Then presto, it’s done.
I have the 14 Pro and hope this helps.
One other note: After the reset I placed my phone on the charger for a couple of minutes and watched until the Always On Display appears again and it’s still working perfectly.
1) Thank you but I know how to force restart a phone and 2) I don't have this problem. Perhaps you meant to reply to someone else?
Hi John2805 I think I can help you
Just follow my steps please
Go to Settings
Scroll down till you see Display & Brightness and and select it
Scroll down till you see Always on Display
and select it
Toggle the switch on or off
I have the same problem.
Unfortunately none for the force restart suggestions fix it for me.
I’m guessing it’s some algorithm getting itself messed up.
I’ll think about joining the beta program and use the feedback app there. Might help 😊
I’ve done the hard reset about a hundred times in the last few months, and it never fixed it for me either. Strangely enough, the AOD suddenly started working flawlessly for about a week last week, but after I had to power the phone off and back on yesterday to deal with a glitch, it went back to its previous random evening blackouts. Frustrating. Lesson learned, I won’t be rushing to buy the next new model.
Very true and sadly, I think a fix is nowhere near. What I believe is happening is that is a proprietary learning algorithm by Apple. Which kind of notices when it’s night time and turns off the AOD. I wish they gave us an option to turn off any algorithm systems especially for the AOD
It’s happening on the iPhone 14 Pro too, not just the max. It worked fine until the 16.2 update, and not since. Seems like a bug rather than a feature, but none of the many things I’ve tried have helped. I’ve yet to try erasing the phone and restoring from backup, but I’ve been reluctant since it’s such a pain to do. Apple doesn’t seem to be listening, based on the various conversations I’ve had with Apple Support, which didn’t help fix the problem.
"Always on" on Android means exactly that. On 24/7 until "I" not Samsung or Apple decide to turn it off. Google seems to get that ALWAYS means just that so I don't need Apple to dictate or select what's best suited to my needs.
Starting to feel I made a huge mistake going from Android to Apple.
I have the same issue, of course. I tried turning off do not disturb and sleep focus with no change. In the do not disturb settings there is the ability to use a focus filter. Always on display is listed there so I enabled it. It still doesn't stay on during the night. I just tried the forced restart method so I will see if that works. If not, I will hard reset the phone. Why is this so complicated?
just did a chat with apple support and turning off is the way it was intended to operate. Hopefully apple listens to user feedback and allows us to set it to "Always On". Just like Apple to give us a feature we have wanted for years but not give it to us the way we wanted it. Gotta laugh.
Device: iPhone 14 pro 256GB
iOS: 16.4.1
I keep finding that the AOD option under Settings>Display keeps getting toggled off.
i have set a "Do not Disturb" Focus to turn on every night at 10:30pm and to turn off at 6:00am every morning. As part of the Focus, i have toggled AOD off during its duration. at 6am, when the focus goes back to normal. the AOD option continues to be toggled off.
Is anyone else experiencing similar complaints?
Well, I spoke too soon. Screen still randomly turns off some days, other days are fine. No pattern on time of day, 100% random. Does seem to happen more if its darker in the room. I do not have any focus modes enabled.
iOS 16.4, 16.4.1, and 16.4.1(a) have all shown this behavior.
Not fixed in IOS16.5 either.
I purchased two iPhone 14 Pro Max, the always on display on one works ok, the other one experiences all the issues I have read here. Perhaps it’s an issue with a third party app.
