Always-On display goes dark when you don't need it
To save battery life, the display is completely dark when:
This sadly seems to still be an issue as my AOD continues to turn off on my new 15 pro max with 17.0.2 installed. It clearly seems to be due to the algorithm it uses to decided when to turn it off anyway as the ambient light seems to affect it. None of the stated possible reasons applies. Very frustrating that the always on display turna off by itself so often when not desired.
I turned Standby completely off. I don’t use the feature. I’ll see if that fixes it. I had this problem on iOS 16 (which didn’t have standby) as well.
The lowlight explanation seems logical. This problem usually crops up in the evening (but with sufficient ambient light). I haven’t paid close attention to say it never happens during the day.
Always On Display worked perfectly on my iPhone 14 Pro Max until I installed iOS 16.2. (It has gotten worse with iOS 17, by the way.) Now it keeps going black just seconds after I set it down. I have checked the Apple list of circumstances and conditions under which the display is designed to turn off automatically, and none of those apply here—I never changed any settings or behaviors.
Yes I have noticed this exact thing: at night it decides to start turning off on its own.
Yes. Did you read what I posted? None those reasons apply.
With iOS 16.6 my AOD is not staying on AT ALL—not even for a few minutes. I have tried the usual things—force restart; toggling it off, restarting, and toggling it back on.
Seems like an intended design although I don't like that we don't have an option to keep the AOD whether there is ambient light or not.
This worked for me
options>standby>display
and set that to "never".
I’m very frustrated too because they assured me that the new iOS 16.3 update would correct it. But after installing, just like clockwork, at 8 pm my phone went black. I’ve tried everything they’ve suggested but after 5 phone calls, many texts, a trip to the Genius Bar & now, the new update, nothing has changed & nobody at Apple seems to care. You’d think they’d be on top of the problems with this new 14 Pro.
I’m sure we’ve all gone over your list of reasons a dozen times. We’re not 3rd graders here. Just very frustrated customers tired of the run around and disappointed in Apple for not directly addressing the issue.

Thanks for the suggestion! I can already tell it’s not working for me since the screen’s already gone black once since then, even though it usually only happens at night. Hopefully others will have more luck, and hopefully Apple will get its act together and fix this bug.
did any of you contact apple support and get feedback? it's getting increasingly frustrating with the dark display after 8 o'clock in the evening - and especially when you've tried the available workarounds hundreds of times and nothing helps...
Same here. Really annoying. Got rid of my bedside clock due to this feature being so useful. Now that AOD is not actually on, I can’t see the time when I wake up in the middle of the night and so I must get another bedside clock. Thanks for that…
I came back to Apple after years. I just got the iPhone 14 pro max and now I’m dealing with the same crap as before. I simply didn’t have issues like this with my Samsung. This is an important feature for me. This is very frustrating.
