See→Use Always-On display with your iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max - Apple Support

Specifically:

Always-On display goes dark when you don't need it

To save battery life, the display is completely dark when:

  • Your iPhone is lying face down
  • Your iPhone is in your pocket or bag
  • Sleep Focus is on
  • Low Power Mode is on
  • Your iPhone is connected to CarPlay
  • You're using Continuity Camera
  • You haven't used your iPhone for a while (your iPhone learns your activity patterns and turns the display off and on accordingly, including if you set up an alarm or sleep schedule)
  • Your iPhone detects that you moved away from it with a paired Apple Watch (Always-On display will turn on when your Apple Watch is close to your iPhone again)

I’ve done the hard reset about a hundred times in the last few months, and it never fixed it for me either. Strangely enough, the AOD suddenly started working flawlessly for about a week last week, but after I had to power the phone off and back on yesterday to deal with a glitch, it went back to its previous random evening blackouts. Frustrating. Lesson learned, I won’t be rushing to buy the next new model.

Device: iPhone 14 pro 256GB

iOS: 16.4.1

I keep finding that the AOD option under Settings>Display keeps getting toggled off.

i have set a "Do not Disturb" Focus to turn on every night at 10:30pm and to turn off at 6:00am every morning. As part of the Focus, i have toggled AOD off during its duration. at 6am, when the focus goes back to normal. the AOD option continues to be toggled off.

Is anyone else experiencing similar complaints?

Apple, please fix this issue! I’ve just purchased a 14 pro and have it run in iOS 16.6. I have seen the lists in this thread but none of the situations apply to my situation. My phone is just lying facing up, no do not disturb or any other mode switched on and the AOD keeps turning off after about 30 seconds. I’m really disappointed because I intended to use the AOD as an alternative bedside clock. Please make sure the AOD is ALWAYS ON.

More often than not, my AOD is in fact not always on. It also will randomly turn on (not due to any event like a notification) only to turn off moments later. The marquee feature of the iPhone 14 is broken.

I hope this is fixed in iOS 17.More often than not, my AOD is in fact not always on. It also will randomly turn on (not due to any event like a notification) only to turn off moments later. The marquee feature of the iPhone 14 is broken.

I hope this is fixed in iOS 17.

I am having the same issue from the moment I installed iOS 17 on my iPhone 14 pro max , it worked fine for me on iOS 16. Apple have completely ruined always on display, i contacted apple support a million times , they have no idea how to fix it and their solution everytime seems to be " wait for next update" . It baffles me that a feature that has the word "always" in it doesn't stay always on. My iPhone is like one of those cheap Chinese ripoffs of iphones that you buy for 50$ at wish.com. I am just waiting for S24 ultra to switch from this useless phone.

A few days ago I changed from Samsung S24 Ultra to iPhone Pro Max, and I'm already thinking about undoing the change and going back to Android precisely because of this incredible problem. I work at night, and the fact that as soon as it gets dark the AOD turns off (does Apple know what "always" means?) is bothering me a lot, apart from the fact that I like to have it active on the bedside table while I sleep. Very disappointed with some things on iOS, but this one in particular seems like a joke to me.
