Mac Mini M2 wifi issues

New Mac Mini M2 has constant issues with wifi. Its unusable. Ethernet works perfectly, but when using wifi the connection will consistently drop packets. Wifi works perfectly with older Mac mini M1, MacBook Pro, Intel Mac in the same small office. I have turned off all other devices and still have same issue. Did a factory reset and same issues.

Chiming in to say I'm still having the same issues. Thankfully I have access to ethernet in my spot in my home office, which is the ultimate band-aid fix. If I didn't, my computer would be unusable. Sadly, I've found it more convenient to just plug it in and let it ride with poor wifi but a strong hardwire connection.

Some other bandaid fixes that have worked for me:

  • Turning the Mac Mini on its left side (with the front facing power light toward the top increases the signal strength. The wifi antennas must be on the right side of the device. I also bought a plastic Mac Mini stand to keep it propped up well.
  • Minimizing the use of the thunderbolt ports in the Mac Mini. When I'm using 2 or fewer of the 4 thunderbolt ports in the back of the computer, my Signal to Noise ratio (SNR) is in the high 30s, with about 30% signal noise. As soon as I plug in a 3rd (and 4th) device to those thunderbolt ports, the noise goes up into the mid 50s and the SNR drops to the low 20s. So if you're able to, try not plugging too many things in to the back of the computer. (Hilariously depressing that a solution to this problem is to not utilize your $2500 computer to its full potential.)
  • Again, this computer would be UNUSABLE if I did not have access to ethernet. The Wifi is awful, while every other device on my gigabit network thrives wirelessly.

I've also had some issues with my OWC Thunderbolt 4 Dock with transferring data from one drive to another (both being plugged into the dock). Not sure if this is an issue with the Power Delivery of the dock or its relationship to the computer, or something with Ventura or Silicon. All of these things feel like a symptom of the same issue, but I can't be sure.

Truly depressing that Apple has put out a product that is borderline unusable unless the consumer uses a specific setup. I can't believe this thread with almost 300 replies and tens of thousands of views has still been ignored by Apple. A huge betrayal of the company's power users. Shame on them.

I experienced the same problem (high ping - hundreds of ms) and failing network connectivity on my macbook when my router switched to channel 100 on 5GHz. By disabling "Auto select channel including DFS channels" I solved the issue.

There are 16 DFS channels: 52, 56, 60, 64, 100, 104, 108, 112, 116, 120, 124, 128, 132, 136, 140, and 144. (DFS channels)

When I noticed the network is slow again I checked which channel is being used at the moment and it was channel 100 in my case. I tried to manually select "non-DFS" channel and the ping was totally fine again!

I'm having the same issue M2 mini wifi keeps needing to reconnect. When I get timeout or spinning icons loading something from the web,I I turn the wifi switch in the menu bar off, wait a few ~15 seconds and turn it back on, then after a bit, it connects again. It's so frustrating. Is the recommendation to go to Apple store for repair? Those who have repaired did they need to wipe your data?

I am using FortiAPs (231F) on my own and haven't had issues with connecting either 2.4GHz or 5GHz. I have disabled the DFS channels for dynamic usage. E.g. today my FAPs are using the channel 161. My MBP M2 pro and my Mac mini M2 pro can connect to it without issues.

But, I am having the latency / packet loss issues. Only on my Mac mini M2 Pro.

I am still in the discussion if it is a hardware issue or not. At the moment, I am collecting the third time debug logs for Apple. The same debug logs as the first two times.

Is this behavior / issue appearing on the Mac Studio, too?

Are you sure? Can you share a link to the report, please? I have only read that the HDMI port and the HDMI cable can cause WiFi interference. If the USB-C to DP can cause WiFi interference too, then I cannot use any cable to connect a monitor?! ;-)

I am using these cables USB-C to DP cable, because of a reference I have seen in this forum or a reddit thread regarding the Mac mini M2 pro.

I had the same issue. My monitor was connected through the HDMI port and in one of the Thunderbolt ports I had a USB-C hub with external devices connected. WiFi dropped after a while and I was unable to reconnect, it kept asking for the router password! Meanwhile my iPhone and iPad were connected to WiFi normally.

Guess what, as soon as I unplugged the USB-c hub my WiFi started working on the MacMini. Then I read something HMDI interference. I tried several HDMI cables but that didn't make any difference.

Since I connected the monitor by USB-C to HDMI cable all WiFi works perfectly. Simultaneous use of HDMI and USB-C (Thunderbolt) port seems to be the issue, at least in my case.

Perhaps a future Ventura update can improve this so that all ports can be connected without interference issues. My HDMI port remains unused because of this but I need WiFi connection!

Sure. I have a LG 27” Uktrafine 5K monitor plugged into usbc. Four SSD external drives, also usbc. Mac keyboard is plugged in using supplied cable to usbc. OWC thunderbolt hub using usbc.

Airdrop is also giving me all kinds of problems like not sending or very slow sending. I tried resetting my iPhone network settings (ugh) and removing the Wi-Fi preferences on in the Library folder on the Mac Mini.

I bought my Mac mini m2 yesterday and was working fine (Updated to 13.6). today all sites were taking ages to load. I switched to the 2.4 ghz slightly better but not as expected. my windows 2010 machine was better :(. After doing some research it appears to be Apple has set the wifi on both 5 ghz and 2.4 to use WPA3 authentication. the routers of most people will be using WPA2 Personal. Lucky my ASUS router gave me the option to pick WPA2/WPA3 Personal and that is when everything started playing nice.

Check this on your router first as returning the mini won't resolve the issue. I hope someone from apple here will pick this and set this option as a default in the Mac mini wifi config.

The Other World Computing hub may still be too close to your Mac mini to avoid all interference. Yes, the M2 Pro Mac mini's shouldn't be vulnerable to interference that other Macs aren't affected by. Doesn't make sense to me.

I was thinking. Maybe the Mac mini is vulnerable to Wi-Fi interference because its Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennae are located so close to any hubs or devices that may be plugged into it.

I would hate to think what happens if you rack mount one of these new Mac mini’s like many others do as there’s no way they can handle that interference. I just ran an ethernet cable to end my Wi-Fi frustration. I’m just fed up dealing with the interference issue at this point. This is the first Mac or PC I be ever encountered it with in 20 years.
