Usb camera adapter iOS 16.5 not charging device

Updated to 16.5 today. My 7th gen iPad is used for midi music apps. I have an apple usb lightning camera adapter with charging. The charging port will not work for the iPad anymore. I’ve tried several different apple cables. The adapter will allow charge-through to my iphone, so it’s not a hardware issue. I’ve done several restarts / reboots on the iPad. Still no success. Charging only occurs with direct connection and NOT through the adapter. Any other solutions available?

For information, the iPadOS 16.5.1 update did indeed include a specific fix for charging issues affecting the Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter:

“iPadOS 16.5.1

USB Camera Adapter 16.5 issue killed my sax session today!!!

However there is a workaround that I’ve found waiting for a fix: using a USB-C to lightning cable and USB-C charger or powerbank allows USB Camera Adapter to charge properly my 14 Pro max and provides power to Scarlett Solo. Only lightning to USB-A gear don’t work here.

I have the same charging problem with my iPad Air (3rd gen) and the USB Camera Adapter A1619 (firmware 1.0.5).

I tried to use the link suggested by LotusPilot to officially open a bug, and I incredibly found out that the field form used to specify the iPadOS version didn't either list the 16.5 version.

How is it possible? Does anyone really read the issues submitted via this form? Does Apple really care about user's feedback?

As is, with iPadOS 16.5, the Apple USB3 Camera Adapter will allow pass-through charging when using a USB-C Power Adapter - but not when using a USB Type-A Power Adapter, regardless of power output (W). The current issue exists with both iPad and iPhone.

USB-C PD (Power Delivery) uses Power Profiles that can operate at higher voltage than USB-A’s 5V.

Anyone experiencing this issues is strongly advised to submit a bug report:

Feedback - iPad - Apple

Until resolved, the workaround is to use a USB-C PD Power Adapter with a USB-C to Lightning cable.

The latest iPadOS 16.5.1 fixes this issue.

After ANY iOS/iPadOS upgrade/update, you should ALWAYS perform a simple hard reset/forced restart of your Apple mobile device.

For iPad models with a Home button, do a simple hard reset/forced restart of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake/power button simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons.

OR

For much newer design iPad models, without a Home button, try the new simple hard reset/forced restart procedure for the new 2018-2022 iPad Pros, 2020/21 iPad Air 4 and 5, the 2021 iPad Mini 6 and the new 2022, 10th gen base models,

1. Press and release the volume button closest to the top Power button

2. Then immediately ( and quickly ) press and release the volume button farthest from the top Power button.

3. Then, press and hold the top single sleep/wake/power button You will see the Slide to Power off button, but keep on holding down the power button until you see the Apple logo, then let it go.

Once you have performed all the steps, wait for a few seconds and your 2018-2022 iPad will boot up completely to the iPad’s Lock screen.

Best of Luck to You!

At least one other report of this issue has since been seen within this community.

If you haven’t already done so, perform a forced restart of your iPad - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If the problem persists, please contact Apple Support - as they may need to escalate the issue. Apple Support can be contacted here:

Official Apple Support

Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/apple-support/id1130498044

You would also be well advised to submit a Bug Report via Apple’s Product Feedback portal. For iPad and iPadOS:

Feedback - iPad - Apple

When submitting your Bug Report, please ensure that you include details of your iPad model and the installed version of iPadOS within the body-text of the report. Please don’t rely upon the pick-list - as this often does not include the latest models or most recent release. Every submitted report counts, as until sufficient reports are received, Apple may not assign resources to investigate and correct the issue.

After the 16.5 update - my 9th generation iPad, which has a Lighting connector, was also not charging via the camera adapter. I have written to Apple support, but so far there has been no reply.

Today I've solved the problem of not charging. I just used a different cord (lighting-type C) and a different charger-adapter (with type C). Now charging also via the camera adapter. The charger and cable, which cost me a total of 13 euros, are not even Apple.

Same issue with 7th generation iPad! I have a small recording setup and my iPad will not charge with Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter. I Tried all suggestions including 20w usb-c to lightning and nothing worked. However, I did find a workaround with this. [Apple MFi Certified] 4-in-1 USB OTG Hub, Lightning to USB Hub from Amazon. My interface is powered and my iPad now is charging! Hope this helps!

iPhone 13 Pro Max here hitting same issue. I've been using the official Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter for months to send lossless Apple Music to my DAC, and it's worked flawlessly and charged my phone at the same time.

As soon as I updated to iOS 16.5 this morning, the adapter not only doesn't communicate to the DAC at all, it doesn't even charge my phone. When I test plugging in an iPad on a previous OS version, it communicates and charges just fine.

This has to be an issue with iOS 16.5, and I hope it's resolved quickly - very bad look for an official Apple accessory to be rendered inoperable by a step update of iOS.

I chatted with support and submitted via Feedback page as well, just wanted to add my voice to the chorus here as well, very frustrating.

It is definitely 16.5 update issue. After update my daughter's iPad 6gen cannot be charged anymore through camera adapter, so my daughter is not able to use her midi keyboard with her iPad anymore (as iPad is not charging she get's message ther is not enough power) . Luckily there is an old iphone 6s in the house that was off, so it did not update to 16.5 automatically, and adapter works just fine with it, it still charges and connects with midi keyboard, everything works just fine with the same adapter. I almost bought a new adapter thinking it is the adapter's fault, but obviously it isn't. I would be very nice from Apple guy's to fix this 16.5 issue.

Because initially there was that possibility that lightning to USB-A cable/charger might be the issue, as lightning to USB-C cable and charger seems to fix it. But perhaps it’s because 20W and below it not enough now. USB-A is even 12.5W. Perhaps more than 20W is now required as it has been mentioned elsewhere. To provide enough power to all devices, or because new iPhone 15 will come with USB-C and PD and they made a mistake in the OS update… so try with a more powerful charger or powerbank and you can report results here too.
