Unable to get iMessage Notifications on my iPhone 13 Pro Max

Hi Everyone,

I'm hoping that the amazing people of the Apple community can help solve a mystery I have been experiencing for months.

For some reasons I am not getting notifications from some of my contacts, If I am holding the phone and it is unlocked, then I get the notification (both sound and vibration) if however, it is not in my hand, or unlocked then I get absolutely nothing, no sound, no vibration, not even a notification to the watch. It is very frustrating as I miss important messages, or I do not see them for hours until I next open my phone. It only seems to do it to some (one in particular).

Just to help, I have unpaired the watch and repaired it, I've just recently bought a new watch and it does it on both. It happens if I'm wearing a watch or not, both the watch and phone have notification on. It did it on my iPhone XS Max and it does it on my 13 Pro Max.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Nick

Have you enabled Scheduled Summary?

Settings > Notifications > [Select the App that you are having trouble receiving immediate notifications]

See the pic below for a few examples. Please select immediate delivery.

Go to Settings and tap Notifications. Select an app under Notification Style. Under Alerts, choose the alert style that you want. If you turn on Allow Notifications, choose when you want the notifications delivered — immediately or in the scheduled notification summary.

Use notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Change notification settings on iPhone

  1. Go to Settings > Notifications.
  2. To schedule a notifications summary, tap Scheduled Summary, then turn on Scheduled Summary. ...
  3. To choose when you want most notification previews to appear, tap Show Previews, select an option—Always, When Unlocked, or Never—then tap.

Hi Nick,

Here are some possible reasons why you might not be receiving iMessage notifications:

1. Focus Mode / Do Not Disturb: If Focus Mode or Do Not Disturb is enabled for certain contacts or apps, notifications may be silenced. Check if the specific contacts are muted within these settings.

2. Custom Notification Settings for Contacts: Sometimes, individual contacts may have customized notification settings. Ensure that the contact you're not receiving notifications from is not set to "Hide Alerts" (swipe left on the contact in Messages to check).

3. Message Filtering: Go to Settings > Messages > Unknown & Spam and see if "Filter Unknown Senders" is turned on. If so, messages from some contacts might be getting filtered.

4. Notification Settings: Verify the notification settings for iMessage under Settings > Notifications > Messages. Make sure sounds, badges, and alerts are properly configured.

5. Bluetooth Interference: Sometimes, if your phone is connected to another Bluetooth device, it might direct the notifications there instead of to your watch or phone speaker.

6. Apple Watch Notification Mirroring: Ensure that notifications are set to mirror from your phone to your watch. Go to the Watch app on your phone, tap on "Notifications," and ensure iMessage is toggled on for mirroring.

7. Software Issues: Check for software updates for both your phone and watch. Sometimes, a bug in older versions can cause notification issues.

8. Reset Settings: You might also try resetting the network or notification settings as a last resort. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

These steps should help resolve your issue. Let me know how it goes!

I finally managed to fix this after a month of trying. Back up your iPhone and then go Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. This won't reset the entire phone, just the current settings. Once it has reset you should start receiving notifications again. You can then set up your settings the same way you had them before for everything else.

My situation is similar. My iPhone 15 Pro has been getting iMessage notifications from all contacts with pop-ups but my 10th Generation iPad was not getting any iMessage notification pop-ups form any contacts, but when I go to the Messages app, the texts are there, just no notification. I get message notifications on my Apple Watch Series 10 just fine.

All my iPad notification settings match the iPhone and message forwarding on the iPhone is set to on for the iPad.

I did an all settings reset and then rebooted my iPad but still nothing. After checking the Web, I found something about making sure messages were set for iCloud. It was but no messages were synced. After syncing the messages (121,000+), iMessage notification now work even on the lockscreen.

Not sure if this will help anyone else but worth checking out.

I just finished texting with Apple support.

This was happening with my phone for almost one month. I would not get push notifications, but I will know I will get messages because I would get Trey icon notifications on the Imessaging app

FIX - turn off your phone for one minute - be patient and wait the whole minute (not hard reset, just a regular shut off)

  • then restarted it, and the issue was fixed for me

I was having issues where not all sms notifications were coming through as well. One solution that seem to have worked for me was to disable all Message notifications then enable it. You can do this via Settings app > Messages > Notifications > then toggle Allow Notifications off and exit the settings app. You can then do the reverse to enable the Message notifications. Hopefully that will fix the issues that others are seeing.

I have the exact same issue right now. Notifications for one specific person is not coming through and I consistently miss them. It doesn’t happen every time they text me, but it happens most of the time.

I checked the notifications settings for that one specific person, but everything was normal. They do have a unique text tone and ringtone that’s not the default, but otherwise is the same as everyone else.

I’m hoping someone can help, it’s very frustrating.
