For the past 2-3 days I have been seeing a greyish bar on my M1 iMac's screen. After a few hours the grey bar starts to blink on & off, sometimes disappearing entirely but reappearing again after a 'wakeup from sleep'.
What exactly is happening here? And what can be done to fix this issue?
And yes, I did the obligatory restart/shutdown etc. but this grey bar still appears.

There's not much you can do as it's a screen hardware problem (unless your're still under Apple Care).

Being a hardware problem the only fix is to pay for a new screen and that is prohibitively expensive. If it gets too disruptive to use you could get an inexpensive 3rd party monitor to use and reduce the brightness on the iMacs screen.
Mate, instead of repeating the standard stock answer where prob 90% stated is not applicable in any way shape or form, maybe you or someone else can actually help me to find a solution to my particular issue?
No, my computer screen is NOT turned off and no, the display brightness have NOT been reduced.
And I read someplace else there is no SMC reset for M1 macs.
There is a greyish bar on my turned on, display brightness on, 'non sleeping' M1 iMac screen.
If you or anyone else are familiar with the solution to this exact problem, can you tell me how to get rid of this please?

Same problem with my iMac Apple M1. Only a few years old. Just started a couple days ago. Very frustrating. Restart, upgraded software, etc. doesn't change anything. Come on Apple, please fix or replace. Obviously a common problem and faulty hardware.
Had similar issues. A grey bar appears at the bottom of the screen and blinks. Many people had the same issue and Apple just did not fix it.

I have the same issue. My mac suddenly has a half horizontal grey screen and blinking nonstop. What is happening? Why is this happening? It’s Imac M1 2021 24 Inches. Please help.

I have the same issue and Apple keeps deleting the posts that I am making regarding this
same here. Less than 2 years old. Extremely disappointed at Apple. Hopefully they proceed with a big global replacement program like they did with the AirPods Max.
Same issue with my iMac M1 2021 version after using it for 2.5 years.
I have the same issue with an M1 iMac bought in May 2021. There are horizonal line on the bottom ~14% of the screen.
