Face ID stopped working on my iPhone after iOS 17 update

Updated my iPhone 11 to.ios 17.01 last night. Since then, my face id won't work. I get error messages or it says face id not available. I thought I could reset face ID but it's not letting me do that either

. Rebooting the phone didn't help. Everything was working fine until the ios 17 update finished installing.

It is quite a rare issue, it may occurs somtime when the new software crashed on your device. These steps may resolve your issue:

A. Hard Reset

Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

B. Reset Face ID by turn off your device passcode and set up Face ID passcode

Settings> Face ID & Passcode> Turn Passcode Off> Set Up Face ID Passcode

C. Connect to Mac and Restore iPhone

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

Make sure to back up your phone before restoring it, I hope this instruction will resolve your issue.

Bonsoir

Apple just messed me up mentally with this, I never had a panic attack before today, I’m a Uber driver and both my car payment and rent are due I’m struggling to find orders in my area recently, today was the busiest day on the month, and since last morning my camera wasn’t working so I tried resetting the phone and when I opened Uber again I was asking me for a picture to confirm its me, apple tried charging $500 to chance my camera and sensor and impressed me how employees are not aware of this problem that’s happening with hundreds of costumers, I will probably use rent money to buy a cheap android and get back on the road since apple destroyed me completely today

You’re completely right. And don’t let anyone bully you into not expressing your outrage - you probably spend over $1000 on a device that has failed and there is no clear answer why - this is a user to user forum and as far as I know, you are entitled to express your disappointment while looking for answers - many others feel like this and it’s good to share. Apple DO look occasionally at this page as a senior rep told me he saw every single comment when I sent him the link. I also sent him Reddit links which he looked at.

You are not alone. Apple have dismissed this issue as coincidence unless many more people come forward and they see a trend that points to manufacturing or software - so far they have not. Check your warranty in the meantime. Good luck!

Have tried every suggestion on a new iPhone 15. Nothing works. If I turn on Face ID, it never ask for passcode, the screen never locks, the minute I touch the screen the lock icon shows open. Turn off Face ID and passcode is required. Touch the screen and the lock icon shows its locked. On the older phone, a couple of apps that used to use the finger print on the button to work now ask to use Face ID. When I say yes it opens the app but nothing shows on the screen to indicate that Face ID was used.

Same issue with my xmax. Just came back from apple support and the guys working there told me it is hardware problem and I have to pay $297 to fix it.

what a ripoff. Apple screwed up with the new update and don’t want to admit it. I insisted that it can’t be a hardware problem as it has happened right after my update but they said your warranty is expired and there’s nothing that they can do.

I am having this issue now too. and Upon attempting to reset face ID, it keeps telling me to reposition my face withing the frame... and alerting me to move the phone higher.. then lower.. then back to higher.. then it just sits there. nothing. my face is within the frame... so now i dont even have face ID??? WTF is happening. Is this apples way of forcing people to get a new phone?

Facial recognition does not work for me as well after upgrade to 17.2.1

Reboot does not fix the problem. Resetting Facial ID goes trough all of the motions and appears to reset, but does not work when you reopen the phone. When I joined this group, I could not use Face ID and had to login with my Apple Account password… after receiving a 6 digit code to log in.

My iPhone as of today is no longer allowing me to use Face ID. I tried going into settings to reset and the software is not recognizing my face. Earlier in the week the phone deleted my two most commonly used emails and I lost all contacts. Had to re-add the emails. My phone is just over a year old and updated to IOS 17.3. Not sure if it was the most recent update, or a hardware glitch. Anyone else experiencing these issues?
