Updated my iPhone 11 to.ios 17.01 last night. Since then, my face id won't work. I get error messages or it says face id not available. I thought I could reset face ID but it's not letting me do that either
. Rebooting the phone didn't help. Everything was working fine until the ios 17 update finished installing.

It is quite a rare issue, it may occurs somtime when the new software crashed on your device. These steps may resolve your issue:
A. Hard Reset
Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
B. Reset Face ID by turn off your device passcode and set up Face ID passcode
Settings> Face ID & Passcode> Turn Passcode Off> Set Up Face ID Passcode
C. Connect to Mac and Restore iPhone
Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
Make sure to back up your phone before restoring it, I hope this instruction will resolve your issue.

Here is what worked for me iPhone 13 IOS 17.1.2
-Deleted face ID
-Turned off "Require attention"
-Remade Face ID, worked
-Require attention turned on automatically
Didn't need a soft or hard reboot to do this
Ok, mine stopped working to, put in a support chat with Apple, they remoted into my phone through privacy - Analytics, all of a sudden my Face ID is fixed, who cares about the politics or exactly what was done & who new about what, my phone is fixed, the person I chatted to was very polite & problem solved in no time at all.,, well done Apple
I was about to backup my iphone to mac to get ready to contact apple for a support, but immediately after I connect my iphone with mac, the face id works... it might be a possible solution for some people.
Turning off “Require Attention” and cleaning the lens (which was already clean) worked for me
I did this, excluding setting up Face ID again, because it was working again without having to. I had gone into general settings & after shutting down, left it off for a minute or two & it fixed itself.
I experienced this today with my iphone 11 pro/17.4.1, heres what worked for me; after failing many times including after rebooting and attempting to select “set up face ID’, i noticed the toggles for any of the Face ID settings above it were all off - i turned it on for iphone unlock, then it worked fine - hope this can help someone!
had the same problem. unfortunately, the only thing that resolved it was to reset the phone completely (without restoring old backup) and reinstalling everything from scratch.
This fixed the issue for me. Reset your face id by deleting previous one. Turn off your numeric passcode. Now set up face ID again. problem fixed. Hope you have success.

This also worked for me after my son removed the glass screen as he said it was blocking at the top. Yippee!
I cleaned the lens with a Lysol wipe and it worked! I always carefully clean my phone, but with the screen protector, the lens got missed.

After numerous failed tries to reset Face ID after I installed 1OS 17, I simply cleaned the lens and screen. I could then reset FaceID.
Using diagnostics available in iOS 14.6 or later, Apple has detected an issue with your TrueDepth camera that might cause it to not function as expected. The TrueDepth camera contains lasers, which might be disabled for safety reasons if the device malfunctions or is damaged. This won't prevent you from using your iPhone or iPad, but until your iPhone or iPad is updated or serviced, you might not be able to use Face ID, Animoji, Memoji, and some other features that use the front camera.
As a result, I recommend service.
