AirPods not connecting to iPhone after updating to iOS 17

Has anyone had an issue with their AirPods not connecting to their phone after iOS 17 update? My AirPods Pro (1st gen) will not connect to my iPhone 13 Pro Max. When placed in the ears the notification sound to say they’re connected does not happen. Occasionally I get an “AirPods connected” message on my phone, but when I try to play music the sound comes out of my phone, not the AirPods.

I can fix the issue temporarily by forgetting the AirPods device on my phone, then reconnecting them. The sounds come through the AirPods, but when I stop playing music, dock the AirPods to the case and come back to use them later, the issue reappears.

any advice on how to fix would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I have this issue also. My problem goes even further though as I removed the AirPods Pro from Bluetooth and now my phone will not recognize them at all. I’ve tried every possible way and no matter what my phone just doesn’t recognize them. Everything is updated and everything has a full charge.

There’s definitely an iPhone/airpod issue, I’ve the new 15 pro and 2nd gen pros and it’s very hit and miss if they’re connected or if they're connected calls are audible. They worked perfectly on my 14 pro with no issues. I’ve the latest iOS 17.1 and AirPods are running the latest update. Can Apple let us know if it’s looking at an update to sort this issue as it’s very distracting as I use my phone all day for work?

I’m having same issue. I go to Bluetooth and forget device and then reconnect. Problem is I have to do this everyday. Sometimes putting them in case and taking them back out works also. Literally just been trying those two things until they work again. It’s frustrating. The update definitely created the problem! Never had this issue before.

I bought a 3.5mm to lightning cable with my AirPods Max in case the Bluetooth was lagging for video editing.

I tried connecting it to my M1 MacBook Air and they appear in the sound settings but no sound is coming from the headphones themselves.

Really bizarre…

I also tried toggling off Automatic Head Detection.

Soft Reset.

Forget Device and connect again.

AirPods Max are connecting but again - no sound.

Apple this is not something a company like yourself should allow to happen.

Please fix it ASAP!

We paid a considerable sum of money and expect this beautiful product to work for more than a few years!

This isn't just an iOS 17 issue but also an issue on macOS 14.1 Sonoma. I have the very same issue on my M2 Max 16" MacBook Pro. I can connect them but they constantly loose connection and connect to either my iPhone 13 Pro with iOS 17.1 or my 2019 iMac on macOS 14.1 Sonoma. My AirPods Pro (A2084) is running version 6A300 firmware. There is a serious issue with AirPods and macOS 14.1 AND iOS 17.1. Apple will most likely do what they have been doing for the past year. Ignore it as they think their products are perfect.

The interesting thing is that I connected my AirPods Max with a lightning to 3.5mm jack to my M1 MacBook Air.

They were recognized by the sound settings but there was no sound out of them coming out.

In thought that maybe they were physically damaged (Strange as I have only been using them inside)

But after many resets they connected via Bluetooth and played sound for a minute before they disconnected.

So I think it is some software issue.

The more people complain the higher chance we get for Apple to fix this!

So here is an important piece of information: https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/xr2txe/apple_told_me_airpods_wont_work_if_im_using_a_vpn/

I was having a daily problem of having to reconnect to my AirPod Max since the iOS 17 update that came with a firmware update for my AirPods. Talked with Apple, removed all my VPN profiles off my iPhone and restarted it. AirPods connected right away. There may be other issues, but this seemed to work for me. They suggested I contact my VPN provider and make sure they are not managing your Bluetooth. Also can affect any Bluetooth device apparently. Apple is investigating.

Happens to me all the time since I think iOS 17. I normally restart my phone when it happens, but it doesn’t last. Airpod max will act similarly as well, in that I case I have to put them in the case for a minute then it’s reset and good to go. I had scenarios where either headphone is not recognized and can’t connect, recognized with the pop ups, but can’t connect after, or seems to connect for a second when I pull done control centre and see the name of my headphones flash under the Bluetooth symbol for a second then fail to connect after.

My AirPods are now useless. I did all the steps that support said and now my AirPods won't connect at all. Just says "not your AirPods" and when it does connect it says it's connected but then goes back to the same setup screen or doesn't recognize my AirPods in my ears. My Apple care expired so pretty much Apple support said to bad. I'm very frustrated
