AirPods not connecting to iPhone after updating to iOS 17

Has anyone had an issue with their AirPods not connecting to their phone after iOS 17 update? My AirPods Pro (1st gen) will not connect to my iPhone 13 Pro Max. When placed in the ears the notification sound to say they’re connected does not happen. Occasionally I get an “AirPods connected” message on my phone, but when I try to play music the sound comes out of my phone, not the AirPods.

I can fix the issue temporarily by forgetting the AirPods device on my phone, then reconnecting them. The sounds come through the AirPods, but when I stop playing music, dock the AirPods to the case and come back to use them later, the issue reappears.

any advice on how to fix would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I have this issue also. My problem goes even further though as I removed the AirPods Pro from Bluetooth and now my phone will not recognize them at all. I’ve tried every possible way and no matter what my phone just doesn’t recognize them. Everything is updated and everything has a full charge.

not really sure but I do think the iOS 17.3 update interfered with the connectivity of the AirPods only one is working the other is not left not connecting or being sensed by the case and the right AirPod works the case can sense it but it’s still not connecting to my phone and I think it’s because the left AirPod isn’t being sensed so when I try to all of these ways to get them to connect back it doesn’t P.S DO NOT PRESS FORGET DEVICE WHEN YOUR TRYING TO FIX YOUR AIRPODS this is the second time this has happened to me

I spoke at length with an Apple support tech yesterday after requesting to elevate the issue above the standard support level and I told him about this discussion and how over 1000 people are having the issue. I also told him my AirPods connect to a Samsung phone and Lenovo laptop fine but not connect to iPhone or MacBook after the update. He said he hadn’t had a single ticket assigned with this issue and the elevated (management team) was not aware of any AirPod issues related to the update. I told him to look here and asked at what point does Apple admit it’s a firmware or upgrade issue and not hardware issue on our end. He basically gave me a round about answer and scheduled a Genius Bar appointment to have my headphones looked at.

I said I didn’t want to do that bc they work fine on none Apple devices and others that have gone to Genius Bar were told their AirPods weren’t serviceable.

Whats the collective next step here to get a resolution?

It’s not just AirPods doing this. We have Beats products that are also having the issue. One set of Powerbeats Pro will only connect to an iPhone, they will either not pair and/or show up to connect to any other Bluetooth device. A Beats Flex will connect to one of our Samsung tv’s but not the other one. Both sets of Beats connected to ANY device we owned previously with no issues. It is beyond frustrating. Resetting either of them does nothing, I have even cleared the Bluetooth cache and reset the TVs to factory levels.

Now the AirPods startet to work again. I tried to connect it several times in the last weeks. Sometimes the right Airpod connected. The left one did not charge. Then I did nothing and let the case with inserted AirPods charging with the lightning cable for a week or so. In the meantime I updated my iPhone to 17.2.

Days later I tried again to connect and it connected. The left AirPod was fully charged. The AirPods updated to Version 6A317.

I have the same issue. All worked fine - upgraded to IOS 17 and AirPods no longer connect. Tried all sorts of things such like folks below with no luck.

Removed them from a device which removed them from all devices.

Now they won't pair with IOS17 or an iPad on an older version of IOS or a MacBook - its like they stop broadcasting and won't pair with anything.

I get there's an update for the firmware but without them being able to pair you can't apply it.

Im wondering about running down the battery on them and trying the whole dance again...

I have the same problem as well but found a solution. Try deleting your AirPods then restarting your iPhone and charging your AirPods. Next go to Bluetooth On your iPhone, take your AirPods off the charger and open the top and just wait for your iPhone to connect on Bluetooth. If that does not connect leave the top open and press the button on the back of your AirPods. It worked for me to just open the top and wait for the Bluetooth to recognize.

Hi

I had this same exact problem of airpods stopping pairing after upgrading to iOS 17 - and thanks to this forum, at least I knew it was a global issue. That was helpful.

I just got off a chat with Apple Support and my airpods finally pair again!!

The steps that worked were in this order only (I had tried most of the steps separately with no luck, but this order seemed to do it):

1) Go to "Find My" and click "Remove this Device" for your airpods;

2) Go to your blue tooth settings and click on your airpods and click "Forget this Device";

3) Plug airpods in to charging cable (no idea if this is relevant but it's what I did);

4) Press and hold button on back of airpod case until green light goes off;

5) press and hold button on back of airpod case until green light comes on

After all of that, the airpods miraculously paired to my iphone again and they seem to continue to do so (I've disconnected and reconnected a few times and it still works).

I will admit I feared doing "forget this device" because someone posted in this forum that after doing that, their iphone wouldn't recognize their airpods at all. The above steps took a few moments to kick in - I actually did not think it had worked but then all of a sudden it did. My iphone found the airpods again and this time, when I put one in my ear, I heard the chime and they connected.

I hope this might be helpful to everyone else going through this annoying issue!!!

Thanks!

I have the same experience. I had trouble connecting my AirPods after the iOS 17.0 update. My AirPods battery was wonky for a time and kept reflecting different percentages despite being charged for a long time then once it finally reconnected to my iPad, only the Right AirPod connected. It cannot detect my left AirPod. Everything was fine before the update. Is Apple doing anything about this?

This is also my experience. I've a pair of pro & regular airpods, I've done no modifications to either (wouldn't know how). My pro airbuds, no longer work with a 17.4.1 upgrade. They connect for a few seconds, then disconnect. Makes no difference if there is sound going through it or not.

My regular old airpods, still operate as normal.

I've also tried all the attempts I can find about re-pairing, attempted multiple times in multiple ways over the last few days, no difference.
