iPhone 15 overheating

Hi everyone. I’ve recently purchased the new iPhone 15 pro max and it is heating up even when I’m not using it.

I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue or if it maybe a setting that is causing it that I can turn off?

Any advice is appreciated. :)

For all of you:

Do a simple Forced Restart on your new iPhone by:

  • Press and quickly release the volume up button
  • Then immediately press and quickly release the volume down button
  • Then immediately press and KEEP HOLDING the side power button and KEEP HOLDING it past the swipe to shut down and KEEP HOLDING it until the Apple Logo appears, then let go

Sign back in with your passcode when the phone prompt you and let the phone settle down over the next couple days. If you transferred a LOT of data, it can days for the indexing process to complete. There is likely NOTHING wrong with your phones.

New iPhone Overheating:

Being a new iPhone, did you eat up all the storage, already? If little space remains on the iPhone, things can overheat.

Troubleshooting an Overheating iPhone:

Perform the following:

I. Cool Down the iPhone:

For a few hours, perform the following...

  • Power Off: the iPhone for a bit
  • Unplug: any Cables
  • Place it Atop: Laptop Cooler
  • Keep it in: an open space
  • Keep it Out of: direct sunlight

then...

2. Clear Space Using my User Tips:

See if you need to clear lots of space. System resources may be using up too much services, making it overheat. Internal storage cannot be upgraded. It is what it is. So, the maximum internal storage capacity never increases, even if you upgraded your iCloud plan. Learn More here: What's the Difference Between Device Storage and iCloud Storage? Apple Support

So, what to do...

I'm not entirely convinced that the problem is only indexing.

My 15 Pro (not Max) is sitting at pretty much normal room temperature when not in use, but I just spent about 10 minutes watching streaming video over wifi with the screen at about 30% brightness (in a room with a temperature of 69 degrees fahrenheit, so it's not an ambient temperature issue either) – the phone got hot enough that it was uncomfortable to hold, and the battery dropped by about 15% in that time (not exactly the "up to 23 hours" of video playback time that Apple claims there...).

I'm not going to say that indexing couldn't be part of it, but 1) that seems pretty extreme, even with indexing, and 2) I would hope that Apple throttles their indexing when the phone is busy doing other things.

I'm going to give it until the end of the week for indexing to finish or for Apple to release a software fix or whatever, but if it's still doing this by then, I'm returning it. I'm also recommending to friends who haven't gotten their phones yet to hold on buying anything until we see where this goes.

(Oh, and in response to the other post, it's a 1TB phone with about 600GB free, so it's not a free space-related issue either.)

Telling Apple to fix anything here is about as useful as shouting in the wind. This is a user to user only forum. You are not addressing anyone at Apple. You or anyone in this thread who is concerned about your phones, should schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar and let Apple run diagnostics.

We've had our iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max since Friday and they operating flawlessly. Sure they were a tad warm during the setup and after while indexing all the data, but they are now working great.

Apple isn't here on this user to user only forum. Apple isn't reading these posts for content. If you want to share your experience, that's fine. But you and everyone else who is concerned about their phone should either tell Apple about your experience, by providing feedback using their Feedback link, which they WILL read or, schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar and have Apple test your phone to ensure there isn't something wrong with it.

If you want Apple to hear you, use this link --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

If you want to have your phone tested (I would if I thought something might be wrong with it), you can schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar via this link --> Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

Or you can worry and complain here on a user to user only forum where Apple isn't paying attention. Your choice.

I received my 15 Pro Max 512GB yesterdy. It did get hot while setting up and it displayed Charging On Hold message.

I suspect this is due to huge icloud restore done by default on cellular instead of wifi as my phone Data Mode is set to Allow More Data on 5G. I realised that it was using cellular data as I received data warning messages from my carrier. I couldn't find a way to stop/pause the restore to tell the phone to use wifi instead. Prolonged cellular data usage does heat up any phone. Charging via Magsafe or via USB C seems normal now. I may be lucky - for the time being.

Hi all !

I know this is IP 15 chat but about 2 days ago I ve began to experience a warm feeling on the back of my IP 14 Pro and I had turned off background app refresh

Warm from the whole back of the phone managed to "relocate" just to the top, close to camera area and temperature dropped at least a little bit but the problem still seems to persist.

Take your phone to Apple Store and have it checked by a qualified Apple technician

Take care !

I called in today because of the overheating and battery loss. The technical adviser ran a diagnostic on the battery which came back good, but escalated the issue up to their engineers because I lost 25 percent battery life in less than 30 minutes. I would recommend calling apple and voicing your concern and or complaint. They were very helpful! I am hoping that the issue is resolved and only stems from the iOS software.

Waiting to know is hardware of software. If not clear within next days will return it to Apple.

In the meantime is solved my problem with extreme head and battery depletion during calls by switching to low power mode.

Same call of 1 hr yesterday burning hot battery from 50% to 18% today with lpm normal temp and battery 88% to 80%

I mean the phone that is not charged overnight. From my experience with 12 pro max and 13 pro max, the drop after the night was a maximum of 4-5%, while in the 15 pro max after the first night it dropped by about 7-8%.

Note that after an inital set up that includes restoring a back up, it's going to take a couple of days for the phone to finish background indexing. The first day or two, my 15 Pro lost more power than I was hoping. But, since then, it's been great.

There is unlikely to be a recall. In the short term they can reduce the temperature at which throttling occurs to reduce the external temperature to an acceptable level but this will affect peak performance.

In the longer term, as yields improve of lower-power A17 chips, the situation will improve. There are also likely to be tweaks to thermal solution inside the phone. As with most consumer products, there will be engineering changes to modify the design, and the manufacturing process to address issues that arise in early production. Just as you don't want to buy the first year of a new model car, you don't want to buy the early production of a new smart phone, and this applies to Samsung and other manufacturers as well.

You can't "field test it to death." You need large quantities in the hands of actual users before these issues become known. Remember the iPhone 4 antenna issue, "Antennagate" that resulted in Apple offering free bumper cases so users would not touch the frame in the wrong place and cause attenuation of the antenna? Remember iPhone 6/6 Plus "Bendgate" where Apple began applying extra epoxy to the iPhone 6/6 Plus in an effort to strengthen the phone, and then, in the 6s/6s Plus, used a stronger chassis?
