iPhone 15 CarPlay Not Working

My Apple CarPlay worked great on my iPhone 14, and does not work with the new iPhone 15 USB-c. The car only has a USB port, and I’ve tried multiple USB to USB-C cables and none work. What’s going on? It’s a 2023 Mazda CX-30

Old USB C to A cable from Titan cable. CarPlay not working with iPhone15 on a 2017 Ford F150 or a 2020 Prius Prime. Cable worked fine with older phones and as a charge/sync cable when plugging into a laptop PC. Still, something about these cables isn’t up to snuff.

Bought these Anker USB C to A cables and all issues resolved. Instant connection in both vehicles, 100% effective every time. No difficulty establishing CarPlay connection on unplugging and replugging, restarting vehicle, etc…

Hope this helps someone:

I found the solution and Wavesponge had the missing piece. You need to delete all devices from the the CarPlay device management along with renaming your iPhone and hard rebooting it. You will likely need to go through the CarPlay device management delete process several times until all are deleted. I found as I deleted there were many older devices still in the device management. Next un-pair from Bluetooth in car and on device forget. Once all devices are cleared the radio looks at your device as the first one connected to CarPlay and starts with a brand new message.

  1. Delete and forget your phone from Bluetooth on phone and on radio.
  2. Re-name your phone in Settings >About>Name
  3. Hard reboot your phone volume up>volume down> press and hold power button until Apple logo reappears and release.
  4. Plug in UBS C w/ USB C to A adapter or any name brand cable that is USB C to USB A. I used the Apple USB C and adapter, Anker USB C to USB A and Amazon Basics USB C to USB- A. All worked so the cable is not the issue.
  5. Once plugged in CarPlay should pop up and follow menu directions.
  6. Last pair your phone via Bluetooth.

I spoke with Apple tech and passed along screen shots. The full delete of devices and these step I am confident solves the problem.

Same issue on 2020 Mazda CX-30 (previously connected to an iPhone 11). I recently upgraded to an iPhone 15 and bought a USB-C to USB 'original' adapter and a generic cord to use in the car, both off of Amazon. I know the cord worked, at least for charging my iPhone 15 in my house. And Mazda's Apple Car Play recognized the iPhone 15 and paired with it via Bluetooth, as I could play my music through the Mazda's entertainment system.

But the iPhone 15 kept connecting and disconnecting to Car Play via the wired connection.

Spoke to a guy at Mazda's service department in Tacoma. He was helpful, but couldn't really sort it out remotely. Hypothesized it might be the cord...or the adapter. So I brought the original cord I got with the iPhone down to the Mazda, plugged it in via the generic adapter and Viola...it was good times once again.

I have no idea what the difference is between Apple's OEM cord and the one I got from Amazon, but it's not a problem as I just need to charge my phone in the house (and either cord does that). But only the Apple OEM cord will let me iPhone 15 drive the Mazda navigation system via Apple Car Play.

THE FIX!!!!

Everyone, please read this and try it. I've been using the adapter going on 4+ weeks without any further issue. I drive a 2022 Mazda CX-30 that has a USB port. I tried several different cables and those didn't work. Some worked for a few days while others wouldn't work at all. Once I purchased a female USB-C to male USB adapter and then using the original Apple iPhone USB-C - USB-C cable has it worked without issue since. You can purchase this adapter at Amazon or BestBuy for roughly $10 for a 2 pack. I have attached a picture for reference.

FOUND A SOLUTION - Had this issue with an iPhone 15 Pro and a 2020 Jeep Wrangler. My phone would connect, and even charge, but eventually disconnect from CarPlay on its own, even while still charging. I tried the included USB-C to USB-C Apple cord, an Apple USB-A to Lightning w/ the Apple Lightning to USB-C adapter, as well as an Anker USB-A to USB-C cord. After working with Apple Support via chat for a few days, I got it to work. Going to list all steps taken, but it was only after the last step that it has been working without issue.

  1. Settings>Screen Time>Content & Privacy Restrictions - Ensure CarPlay isn't restricted
    1. Still did not work
  2. Settings>General>CarPlay - Forget this car, restart iPhone, reconnect to CarPlay
    1. Still did not work
  3. Settings>General>Transfer or Reset [Device]>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    1. Still did not work
  4. Finally, I spoke to someone at Apple and they had me go to my bluetooth settings and forget my car, and also go to my car settings and forget my phone. I then went to Settings>General>About>Name and changed the name of my phone. Once I did this, CarPlay worked and I have not had the issue since. Doesn't make any sense to me, but I am not complaining.

I was in the same boat as you. Toyota RAV4 with apple carplay over USB-A. iPhone 13 worked fine with apple lighting to USB-C cable and USB-C to USB-A adapter.

iPhone 15 with apple USB-C cable and USB-C to USB-A adapter - no good.

I tried a few different cables - no good. I then tried my USB-C cable that came with my external SSD drive. This is a thicker cable and appears a higher quality - it works!

With further investigation I discovered the USB-C cable apple supplies with iPhone 15 is of a lower standard. This is to create a market for their USB-C thunderbolt cable. I presume a thunderbolt cable would also work.

I'm not sure this will help everyone but it certainly worked for me. so I'm posting here for others, just in case.

Situation: I have a Peugeot 3008 (18plate UK). Not relevant.

I have always connected my old iPhone 8 wired to CarPlay with no problems.

I've just bought a new iPhone 15.

CarPlay has never worked with it! I can play Music through the car speakers with it and use Siri to call home but nothing visual and the CarPlay button remained greyed out.

Yet my wife's iPhone SE worked first time when I tried it this morning.

So, not a car firmware issue and not a cable issue.

I phoned Apple support and they were brilliant! I thought this would be one of those impossible to solve issues but I was wrong. A rather clever person in support had a genius explanation and solution.

  1. He asked me on the phone to go to Settings/About and tell him what the Name of the iPhone was - in my case iPhone(4) - and then check on my car what it was calling the iPhone there. It was the SAME despite the fact this was a new phone.
  2. He deduced that the car was thinking this was the same iPhone ( my old iPhone8) and that was causing the issue.
  3. He got me to change the name of the phone in Settings then go out to the car and disconnect the old iPhone in the car settings.
  4. I then plugged in my new iPhone 15 ( now called Jim's phone) and BINGO ! Straight away up came the CarPlay home screen.

As he said we're just deceiving the car into thinking it's a new phone so it must start from scratch to connect.

Who knew? - but way to go Apple Support !!!

Worth trying for anyone with a new iPhone 15 who was getting audio only or, indeed, anyone whose old iPhone name in bluetooth settings in the car is the same as your new iPhone's name.

Fixed! Same problem with new iPhone 15 and a 2020 Honda. Turns out some USB-a to USB-c cables are "charge only" and some others carry data also. After trying all my cables in the drawer of cables I went and bought a "Belkin BoostCharge Pro Flex" USB-a to USB-c cable and viola it works like it used to with the older phone and lightning cable. $20 for the cable

My Mazda CX-30 uses a wired connection for CarPlay and just would not activate CarPlay on the iPhone 15 Pro.

Here's how I fixed this issue:

First I purchased an inexpensive cable from Best Buy:

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/best-buy-essentials-3-usb-c-to-usb-charge-and-sync-cable-black/6456381.p?skuId=6456381

Then I did the following:

  1. Remove the phone connection from from the car's Bluetooth Settings menu.
  2. Turn off the car.
  3. Turn the car back on.
  4. Plug the phone into the car using the USB-C to USB charge and sync cable.
  5. The car will ask to enable CarPlay. Select OK or Always.
  6. The phone will then ask to set up CarPlay. Just follow the prompts.
  7. At this point CarPlay works normally again.
  8. Now you can add your Bluetooth connection for the phone back to the car's Bluetooth Settings, but you will have to first remove the cable to do this.
  9. After setting up the Bluetooth connection again, both Bluetooth and CarPlay function normally. To use CarPlay, just plug in the phone as usual (wired connection).

I really hope my solution helps other people experiencing this problem.

Also, the old USB-C to USB cable I had tried first did not work. It's important to purchase the cable that I linked to above, although I think any newer cable should work. Just make sure it is a "charge and sync" cable.

Cheers!

Greetings Everyone!

This is a solution that has worked for me. I own a 2022 Mazda CX-30 with the regular USB port for the Car-Play. I tried using various USB - USB-C cables and had all kinds of issues with CarPlay either disconnecting or not connecting at all, at times. So I went to BestBuy and purchased a (Female USB-C to Male USB adapter) and then used the Apple certified USB-C to USB-C cable and for the past 2 weeks, no issues at all. I attached a picture of the adapter for reference.
