iPhone 15 Pro Max Apple Pay not working

When i try to use Apple Pay on my new phone, after double clicking on side button, message comes up to bring phone nearer to the terminal, i have had phone in all positions on the terminal but payment will not complete, then the wallet app freezes when i try to cancel app and restart. It is not just one cards it happens on all cards. I have tried cancelling cards and re-applying them, restarting phone, these have not resolved the problem. Meanwhile apple pay on my watch is working fine. Anyone had this problem, or has ideas to fix?

Do you drive a BMW? Have you charged your phone on the surface charger inside of the car? From what happened to me and other on another forum, that may be the culprit. I and other had to get replacement phones from Genius Bar. The diagnostic test showed a failed Apple Pay unit.

Mine is the opposite; only had the phone 15 Pro for a week and ApplePay said hold near reader. 2 hours on the phone to Apple on Saturday, no problem on the remote diagnostics, eventually Apple were going to send a new phone (no one I spoke to seemed aware of the issue) but I updated to iOS 17.1 Saturday night and ApplePay worked afterwards. I hope it’s a long term fix!

Did you all try updating to 17.1.1 and did it help? As far as I see Apple fixed at least the BMW charging bug which deactivates NFC.

I replaced mine two weeks ago with a new one and I didn’t have any problems so far. However, I believe that there is something wrong with the update process itself. The new one had iOS 17.0 and just to make sure, I did a reset of all my settings (but kept data) on my old phone before I did the backup with iTunes. On the new phone I didn’t upgrade to 17.1 via wireless but via iTunes. I went into recovery mode before, connected the phone to my Laptop and upgraded via factory reset + upgrade to 17.1. THEN I used my backup from iTunes. After that I again had to add my cards into the wallet, however pay attention that you have the correct region under settings and that all personal information are correct (i.e. address, name, phone number..) and so far, after 2 weeks, I have no problems with 17.1. Though I’m a bit nervous updating my phone again, hence I’m still using 17.1 instead of 17.1.1. This must be quite frustrating when buying such an expensive phone.

I replaced my old iPhone 15 Pro Max with a new one 2 weeks ago and have the same issue after updating to iOS 17.1.1 today. It worked with iOS 17.1. My conclusion is that there is definitely a problem with the update process itself in iOS 17 which leads to a corrupt Apple Pay / NFC - at least under 'specific' circumstances. This is unacceptable to be honest. Though I’m done with going again to the Apple Store. In case this issue is not fixed with iOS 17.2, I’ll try a factory reset again and update the phone with iTunes (this way it seemed to work last time when I updated the new phone from 17.0 to 17.1).

I should have kept my iPhone 11 Pro and just stick to iOS 16 (or switch to Android).

Iphone 15pro same exact problem worked fine for a week then suddenly woke up yesterday morning september 28th and apple pay no longer worked. tried multiple different stores with it. none worked. 7/11's machine actually gave me a notice saying "application not supported insert chip card" all the rest just canceled transactions. (they did not decline the charge just asked i insert chip card and canceled transaction.) im assuming many people are having this issue from the looks of reddit forums upon googling the problem. hopefully apple sends out a patch update soon because it seems to be a software issue on the 15 pro and pro max devices running ios 17.0.2

I have the same issue with my iPhone 15 pro.It works on and off. They run a diagnostic test over the iPhone which looked fine then I made an appointment with Genius Bar.Similar symptoms there but I had to purchase there something and return as they told me they don’t have a tester for this anymore.Anyhow we did network reset and reinstalled wallet app.Re-add all the cards.Worked one test after this then I went to Whole Foods and traders Joe and did not work at all in either store. After Face ID it keeps saying hold your phone near to reader constantly.I guess it’s time to get a replacement

Basically, the whole issue seems more than suspicious to me. I had the same problem with two new iPhone 15 Pro Max devices, neither of which were older than a month. That is, when trying to pay with Apple Pay, my Visa debit and credit cards were displayed, but the payment process was not completed. I first encountered this problem AFTER updating to iOS 17.0.3 (on the first iPhone 15 Pro Max) and then again after switching phones (on the second iPhone 15 Pro Max) WHEN updating from 17.1 to 17.1.1. The troubleshooting measures I took at that time included: restarting the phone, re-adding cards to the wallet, resetting network settings, and updating via iTunes. After a diagnosis at Apple, it turned out that the NFC sensor was not broken on either phone. PS: Just to be sure, my NFC sensor was also restarted once remotely by a apple supervisor.

Long story short: Apple Pay is working for me again now, but I must say that I am still on iOS 17.1.1 and have not performed any more updates because I am afraid that it will stop working again with the next update. Honestly, I'm not even sure what exactly solved the issue, perhaps it was also the tip to log out of iCloud, perform a forced reset, and then log back into iCloud. Maybe it was something else. In any case, it also cost me many hours.
