iPhone 15 Pro Max Apple Pay not working

When i try to use Apple Pay on my new phone, after double clicking on side button, message comes up to bring phone nearer to the terminal, i have had phone in all positions on the terminal but payment will not complete, then the wallet app freezes when i try to cancel app and restart. It is not just one cards it happens on all cards. I have tried cancelling cards and re-applying them, restarting phone, these have not resolved the problem. Meanwhile apple pay on my watch is working fine. Anyone had this problem, or has ideas to fix?

Do you drive a BMW? Have you charged your phone on the surface charger inside of the car? From what happened to me and other on another forum, that may be the culprit. I and other had to get replacement phones from Genius Bar. The diagnostic test showed a failed Apple Pay unit.

I insisted that I wasn’t going to be without a phone by only getting a replacement after I’d returned mine, eventually they agreed that as I had AppleCare they would send a replacement first. HOWEVER…I updated to iOS 17.1 on Saturday night and yesterday ApplePay worked, so I hope that’s finally sorted, however I am aware that for some people, the update to 17.1 seemed to cause the problem, so it’s very strange.

Yes, I've updated to OS 17.1.1. When I swapped from ip13p to ip15p it automatically updated the OS to 17.1.1. I did see a note on ip15p under General > About> IOS Version> that reads "In rare instances, Apple Pay and other NFC features may become unavailable on some models after wireless charging in certain cars". I don't have a BMW but do charge with a mat at night but not in an automobile. However, in my case, the problem occurred just after restoring from MBp Laptop back up from ip13p. I can't imagine why or how the method of charging or restoring affects apps though. Sounds like the OS update wasn't ready for prime time. It also sounds like an Apple Wallet issue as well as an OS problem. Given that so many use AW for daily purchases and business, such an app would be throughly checked out before releasing an OS update. I'm likely going back to ip13p just to be able to use it. Might be sending ip15p back to Apple too. Not very happy with this ip15p upgrade.

Same issue. New iPhone 15 Pro. ApplePay (via NFC) virtually never works on this phone. Was fine on my old 12 Pro Max, but after switching to the 15 Pro, I've had maybe 3 or 4 times where it's worked and dozens or more times where it didn't. Double tap side button, choose Apple Card and hold the phone near the reader and nothing. No beep, no acknowledgement in the app, nothing.

Have tried a few things:

  • Take off clear Apple MagSafe case - Nothing
  • Turn off VPN - Nothing
  • Uninstall / reinstall Apple Card - Nothing
  • Restart the phone - Nothing

In chat support diagnostics and now in person at the Genius Bar everything checks out with the NFC chip. In person at the Apple Store, the Genius helping me had me try various taps on his NFC reader and it worked every time. I was even able to make a dummy purchase with Apple Pay at the store. However, in the wild, it simply doesn't work as though the software handshake between my card and the reader never happens and the app simply does nothing.

It's not the end of the world, but it's a bummer. I'd prefer to use Apple Pay for everything and receive my cash back for doing so, but always end up resorting to using the physical card when it fails.

Do you have VPN software on your iPhone? Just the software has been known to affect Apple Pay. Do you have Location Service enabled for Wallet app? Do you have any Accessibility options enabled? How about AssistiveTouch options? Is Face ID enabled with 2FA? Have you tried resetting Face ID?

Sorry, no quick fix, just lots of possible solutions if and when you want to pursue resolving the issue. If you exhaust those possibilities, post back and there’s probably another ½ dozen options.

I already had apple wallet on my old iPhone and it worked fine on my new iPhone 15 pro max for last month but since the latest update it has stopped working. Same as others have reported - says hold closer but it is as close as could be and nothing. I also noticed it stopped pairing with the car (had previously worked fine) and car would not recognise it. A restart fixed both wallet and car pairing for a couple of days but it has stopped again on both. Very frustrating - does anyone know if there will be a new update to fix this bug in the wallet?

Same issue with my brand new IPhone 15Pro. I signed out iCloud, re-signed in, remove and added cards, restarted the phone, checked that all cards has an address…nothing worked.

I started thinking about a case issue, but even without the case same problem. Apple support launched a remote diagnosis and seems that my phone has no hardware issues.

But the behaviour is unoredictable: on Tuesday worked with out issues, on Wednesday stopper again with all tentative I had.

Considering the well noted issue with BMW wireless charging and the Heating one, personally I think that something in the new phone hardware cause interferences on the nfc module and I don’t think it can be solved via bug fixing.

It is unacceptable that a basic and so critical functionality doesn’t work!

will call again Apple support and ask for a replacement…

Basically, the whole issue seems more than suspicious to me. I had the same problem with two new iPhone 15 Pro Max devices, neither of which were older than a month. That is, when trying to pay with Apple Pay, my Visa debit and credit cards were displayed, but the payment process was not completed. I first encountered this problem AFTER updating to iOS 17.0.3 (on the first iPhone 15 Pro Max) and then again after switching phones (on the second iPhone 15 Pro Max) WHEN updating from 17.1 to 17.1.1. The troubleshooting measures I took at that time included: restarting the phone, re-adding cards to the wallet, resetting network settings, and updating via iTunes. After a diagnosis at Apple, it turned out that the NFC sensor was not broken on either phone. PS: Just to be sure, my NFC sensor was also restarted once remotely by a apple supervisor.

Long story short: Apple Pay is working for me again now, but I must say that I am still on iOS 17.1.1 and have not performed any more updates because I am afraid that it will stop working again with the next update. Honestly, I'm not even sure what exactly solved the issue, perhaps it was also the tip to log out of iCloud, perform a forced reset, and then log back into iCloud. Maybe it was something else. In any case, it also cost me many hours. By the way, my NFC sensor was already restarted once remotely by an apple supervisor/technician. IOS 17 is simply a buggy system.
