Extension process Apple ID (4589) exited

After most recent update to Sonoma 14.0, all access to my iCloud account is gone - passwords, etc. are gone and I cannot re-establish the link between my laptop and my iCloud account. And it cannot log out of my iCloud account, that throws an error. I can log in via a web browser, but the OS is not syncing correctly to my iCloud account.

FIX: If you are still receiving this Settings Error after updating to MacOS 14.1.2: “Extension process Apple ID (4589) exited” on your Mac.

I already posted a robust solution in this very forum that works to remove this problem (and has mysteriously disappeared from this thread?). Trying again. This is an iCloud issue after updating. Hopefully, you should still be receiving the error message above. If you've already done some of the other kludges posted herein, and are not still receiving this error message, this may not help you.

After the update to OS 14.1.2, when you follow the screen prompt and agree to accept the new iCloud Terms and Conditions, the “I Agree” link cannot complete because the update has already logged you out of your web iCloud page by turning off your web iCloud password. Under Settings on your Mac, your Apple ID categories will be grayed out and inactive.

The OS update has caused your web iCloud and your Mac iCloud to sever their connection because the new iCloud Terms and Conditions, the “I Agree” link cannot complete. This notification will keep popping up until you fix the problem. It removes trusted status for your Mac as well. It’s as if you never logged in, even if you selected “Keep me logged in”. Why? Who knows!

Here’s what I did to fix the error. It may not work for everyone but the basic solution is this:

•Shut down and reboot your Mac.

•Go to your web iCloud page, you will probably need to log-in again with your existing email and password. Select “Keep me logged in”. If successful, proceed to…

•Shut down and reboot your Mac.

•When the Apple Notification to accept iCloud Terms and Conditions appears, click the “I Agree” link.

•You will be sent to a pop-up that wants to verify you and requires you to select your Mac as “Trusted” by entering a 6 digit code sent to you into a page with six empty boxes. Do so. Follow further instructions.

•Now return to Settings on your Mac, and your Apple ID categories will be full color and active. They now should sync together, and the iCloud Terms and Conditions Notification will cease.

I hope this will remain posted and be of some help.

I'm having EXACTLY the same problem. It seems to have started when I updated my iMac to Ventura, but I can't say for sure that it wasn't present before because I discovered it completely by accident - I've seldom had occasion to access my Apple ID on my iMac. There are no problems with my Apple ID on any of my iOS devices, but I will say that a similar (not identical) problem is present on my MacBook Pro running Monterey; I found that out in troubleshooting the iMac issue, but I honestly don't know if the MBP is affected because it's more vulnerable than the iPhone and iPad or if Monterey was complicit too. What I do know is that changing my Apple ID login (twice) and updating to Sonoma have had no effect .

Anyway, from what I've been able to find online, this thread is by far the most comprehensive in not only showing me that I'm not alone in this but describing potential fixes for the problem. That said, I've tried every one of the suggestions here and the few I've seen elsewhere, but I've found no relief. Which leads me to ask, where is Apple, and why aren't they helping with this? There are obviously a substantial number of users with this issue (probably more than reported because some, like me, have no idea they're affected till they stumble upon it by chance).

I truly wish I were offering a solution in this post, and I apologize for not having one. I only hope the thread stays open long enough for someone to offer a definitive answer to this issue.

Thanks 'Berto, appreciate your attention to detail.

But, like mcmlvi, your steps did not work for me. Did not see the "Terms/Conditions" pop-up. The error happens when I click my name in System Settings.

I have an "Engineering Ticket" in progress, have provided clean test bed and have conveyed tons of syslog-type info to Engineering (via Apple Support). Will post here when I have anything to share from that examination.

So all was OK initially after the 14.3 update but now the bug has returned? That is so weird. I don't know if you have an iPhone, but such a here-today-gone-tomorrow deal reminds me of my contact's phone numbers appearing instead of their names in Messages - sometimes it happens, and sometimes it doesn't, and Apple hasn't addressed that issue either.

I just saw the 14.3.1 update alert - I'm going to go ahead with that after I finish this post. Maybe that'll do the trick. If it does, my next move is to buy a Powerball ticket.

I am getting the error as well but it has nothing to do with iCloud. I have no issues clicking on my Apple ID or Internet Accounts. I get the Extension error when clicking on Network -- Ethernet. The code in parentheses always changes too, when I go back to try to get to the information under Ethernet. Fortunately, I know what stati IP, subnet, and gateway I'm using but I wanted to double check my DNS and that's when i discovered the issue. I'm on 14.4 now so this error apparently likes to jump around the Settings menus. Shame
