iPhone keeps asking for Outlook password

It seems that since updating to iOS 17.1.1 my iPhone 12 Pro keeps asking for my outlook.com email password. I have deleted and recreated the account and rebooted my iPhone but the issue continues. I also deleted the account and re-recreated it as an exchange account (still using the outlook.com address). No help. Any help is appreciated. This is also happening on my iPad running ipados 17.1.1.

I had a live.com account that was giving the pop-up (but still loading messages in Mail) so I knew the password was entered correctly. What fixed it for me was re-adding it as an Outlook account in Mail Settings, rather than Microsoft Exchange. Not exactly your issue but possibly related.

This has been happening to me using my iPad, and through MULTIPLE iOS updates and versions! I don't use Outlook per se, but my email is configured for my "xxx@live.com" account. To fix "temporarily" - I click CANCEL, the message goes away and everything works fine. About 2 or 3 days later, the message is back and "the FIX" still works fine. This is also happening to a friend of mine who also utilizes a "xxx@live.com" account. I can't believe that there's no way to stop the message, and clicking CANCEL is the only fix!

An app password is a password you get from your Microsoft mail account. Some apps are considered less secure as they can't handle codes or are not using the right protocol. The way around this is an app password.

Sign in to your outlook (Hotmail, MSN, Live) account with a browser. If challenged with 2FA complete the sign in.

In the upper right you see your initials or picture. Click on it and then click manage my microsoft account.

When that opens click on Security in the blue bar across top. Then Advance Security option. On the page that opens scroll down to App passwords. Create one and use it to sign into your account using the iOS mail app.

Kens iPod…

I don’t know about that…I haven’t created any ‘app password’ for any of my 8 Hotmail/Outlook accounts, and all is working fine since performing the steps I did, as I outlined on page 14(the page before this) of this topic. What seems most plausible to me is that after installing edge on my iPhone and logging into each Hotmail/Outlook account in the Edge app, the EID or IMEI of my iPhone was added to the Outlook authentication server. I am thinking something in the IOS 17.xx update broke or is masking those numbers from the Microsoft authentication server during the handshake and needs to be initiated again…AND can only be accomplished initially with thru or via a MICROSOFT app. Could it be once Microsoft authenticated the user on the iPhone or iPad it leaves an authentication/identifying ‘cookie’ (for a lack of a better word) on the device…and somehow the iOS 17 update wiped them out? Dunno. But I never set up an ‘app’ password. Wish I could say definitively. Good luck to you and every else dealing with this madness! 👍🙏😇

As I previously posted - this only applies if you have 2FA enable.

FIXED!!! Read below - one more time for cheap seats:

(iPhone 14 Pro Max running IOS 17.0.1)

1) SETTINGS --> GENERAL --> TRANSFER OR RESET IPHONE --> RESET --> RESET NETWORK SETTINGS (this won’t delete any data from your phone, but you may need to authenticate, log in, with certain apps again afterwards)

2) Install EDGE from App Store, add hotmail accounts in EDGE; checking 'stay logged in on this device' for each

3) SETTINGS --> MAIL --> ACCOUNTS --> re enter passwords for each affected account.

4) Tested, all working fine.

5) Delete EDGE app.

It may be work without STEP 1…it would be great if someone could try and let us know. All working fine for almost 2 weeks now. If it works for you, please bump the reply!

Thanks & good luck to all!

I know I have been saying use an app password. I cannot explain it but my wife's iphone started doing this after she had to change her password. She has 2FA enabled so we tried entering a app password. App passwords did work with her account as we have them documented in her password manager. No go. Got a new app password and that didn't work.

She said can she try her regular password in the iOS mail app. We had nothing to lose so I said try it.

It worked. Made no sense at all. She keyed in password, it challenged her with send a code to an email address, she entered the code and it work. No more messages.

May I suggest, just as a test. Enter your outlook mail account using a browser. Manage your Microsoft account and disable 2FA. Once disable try your regular password in iOS mail.

If it works, go back and enable 2FA. I would try 2FA with an email account (rather than texting or authenticator app). I would think iOS mail will challenge you again. Enter your normal password and hopefully it will challenge you by emailing a code.

Just for the record, wife's phone is 14 Pro running 17.1.1.

I'm currently using an iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 16.6.1. I setup two email accounts on my iphone when I purchased the phone in early 2022: Gmail & Outlook; both email accounts were setup to use the Microsoft Authenticator. Subsequent to adding the email accounts to the Microsoft Authenticator, my Outlook email account was setup as passwordless.

I've had no problems using iPhone mail until Nov 11, 2023. At that time, my Outlook email account would not refresh with newer emails. A message at the bottom of the screen says "Account Error: Outlook. Details...".

When I click on "Details...", I get the pop-up "Cannot Get Mail" "No password provided for 'Outlook'".

When I click "Settings", it takes me to the "Outlook" screen which says "Account not Authenticated".

When I click the link "Re-enter Password" it takes me to the Microsoft Authenticator, which, after authenticating, does not resolve the problem. I'm back where I started.

Just today, I installed the Microsoft Outlook app from the iPhone App Store. Using the Microsoft Outlook app, I now receive all of my Outlook email.

I guess using the Microsoft app will be my "work-around" until Apple can solve this issue.
