I managed to restore the iOS back to 17.1.1 and nothing helped

tried every combination of plugs and cables at my disposal but nothing

now my iPad is completely dead and not sure what to do

also port and battery are still good and when iPad was connected to a pc it was recognized but still wouldn’t charge. I’m stumped.

I am having this same problem. My iPad Pro 3rd generation was working just fine until I updated to iOS 17.2. All the apps still work, but it will not charge. I have done a hard reset multiple times and cleaned out the connector space (although it was fine) just to make sure. I tried multiple Apple chargers, but none of them worked, but they all worked fine for other devices. Something seems to be going on with older iPad Pros and iOS 17 with regard to charging. Hopefully, Apple will release an update that fixes this soon as all our older iPad Pros cannot currently be charged/used.

Mine was 3 years old, but still under apple care. I was charged 50$ because apparently the USB connector was damaged, but honestly I think I intentionally broke it when attempting to get to the bottom as to whether it was corroded pins. If the replacement model arriving tomorrow is on 17.2 and charges, I will let you know because they apparently replaced with same model.

I do not think that this is a helpful post. It is confusing. I for one used over 30 combinations of USB-C cables and chargers, including all genuine hardware from Apple, 12 watts and up. Nothing worked. But replacing the IPAD Pro 2nd gen 11 inches out of warranty, but under Apple Care fortunately, for '$50' fee, did get me back a new IPAD on on IOS 17.2 and (clear of 17.1.1 hassle) and everything has been working fine since, including all of the 30 combinations of USB-C cable and chargers stated above. So there we go... I am looking for one example of someone which had its IPAD replaced for this issue, without Applecare... based on advices from this thread. Still haven't found any. Its so obscure, that we should not let obscure posts stand in the way of this issue being solved for good.

Issue still ongoing - Have device inspected at an apple partner, who provided a report, which was sent to a Senior customer care advisor as I have escalated the issue. I provided the report weeks ago and still have not been contacted. As a side not I again plugged in the device when it was returned and it decided to charge once. I again did a full backup, updated to 17.3. device appeared to charge ok again for the next two days but haagin just stopped charging, this time the charge indicator comes on and the icon shows the device is charging but battery doesnt charge. Whilst it was still at about 80% I did a wipe/ factory reset from the device and restored from backup. Device still not charging. And apple at present dont seem to want to know about. So annoyed with this IF i wanted a cheap throw away device that only last a few years I would have bought a Galaxy TAB at 3rd of the price, at this rate I wont be puchasing another apple device if this is how handle issues such as this effecting a number of customers they have clearly caused.

Hi,

After trying every charger (Apple and others) I have, I finally had the idea to try charging it using my Apple Magic Keyboard:

Set up and use Magic Keyboard for iPad - Apple Support

The keyboard has an external USB-C port and charges the iPad using pass through charging. This worked to charge my otherwise dead iPad Pro. I then updated the software and now my iPad Pro charges using a cable again. Yeah! If you have a Magic Keyboard or can borrow one, you might give this a try.

update: it's been charging OK recently. no changes to charger, lightning cable or software. I've been using all of them for quite a while with no issues until recently. A total mystery to me. When going into brick mode, the iPad charging/connected to power icons all turned on, but the battery wouldn't charge and it would just run out of power eventually, even while plugged in.

Sounds very similar to the rest of us. I escalated mine to the the point it went to their consumer law team and was still denied. The only success ive had charging mine was by letting it die totally 0% bat. Then plug in the charge cable and leave it, dont unplug the cable till its fully charged again. (It does seem to take a lot longer to charge tho.

If you unplug and use it, in my experience you will ned to go tho the above again as it wont charge plugging it in again untill its totally flat again. It really does seem like a software bug causing the issue as it wont charge when the IOS is fully loaded into RAM, however when its totally flat with no OS loaded it charges (sometimes) ?

Regardless Ive pretty much written it off, Apple has taken no responsiblity for the issue unless of course your willing to pay for apple care. I know I wont be wasting my money on another apple product again.

I found this thread after my 1st gen iPad Pro (model MTXN2LL/A) died and wouldn't charge shortly after completing the 17.4.1 update as well.

After letting it sit dead for 3+ week, checking daily if it would give me the "battery charging" screen, once the screen was completely unresponsive I was able to charge it again to bring it back to life. This is the second time this has happened, last time was months ago after an update as well.

Would be nice if it didn't do this, but for anyone else it's happening to: letting it completely die seems to be the fix.

Yep, this has been my experience as well. Glad someone was able to use my info and get theirs to charge as well. Mine is still a bit hit and miss using this approach but so far is the only way I have been able to chage the device, not ideal but at least its something? It's IMO a software issue. I tried upgrading the IOS from 17.1.1 im now at 17.4 but still have same issue. So my thinking is the original issue was caused by a particular piece of hardware thats been used in all of our devices that is no longer supported in the code base, which has caused the issues we are seeing. The fact the device charges from dead flat when the IOS isnt running and no hardware drivers are loaded seems to support this theory, as when the IOS is running it will not charge.

I was having the same issue. It would charge through the Apple Magic Keyboard, not through the port at the base of the iPad. My iPad is still under warranty. iPad Pro (12.9 inch) (6th Generation) upgrading to iOS 17.4 resolved my issue. I know that it was not a cable issue as I tested using two genuine Apple USB-C to USB-C cables and tested using my iPad Air (4th Generation) as well as the iPad Pro (6th Generation). iPad Air had no issues, only the iPad Pro suffered this for me. Hopefully upgrading to iOS 17.4 resolves this for others.
