"Your credit card is about to expire" error every time I try to purchase an app in App Store

Whenever I try to make in app purchases I get an error pop up that says “Your credit card is about to expire” and that I need to sign in to update my information. Except my card doesn’t expire until 2027.

I’ve tried resetting my phone, I’ve tried signing out of my Apple ID and back in. I can’t delete and re-add my card because I get an error saying I can’t because I have active subscriptions on the card.

Funnily enough, I canceled my subscriptions on my card thinking I could cancel them, delete and re-add my info and then resubscribe, which I couldn’t do because I got the active subscriptions error again but when I resubmitted my canceled subscriptions they went through just fine.

Also I usually use Face ID to pay, but because of this error, I get asked into sign in to Apple ID instead which is unusual.

Any suggestions? This is so annoying

I’ve had this problem too - started to get emails in the middle of December saying that upcoming subscriptions were going to fail and I should update my payment details - but everything was correct so there was nothing to update. Then yesterday my iTunes Match did indeed fail to renew because the payment failed.

Contacted Apple Support and was fortunate enough to speak to someone who was aware of the cause of this problem. As I understand it, this is an Apple Pay issue where a person’s credit card is linked to Apple Pay. Believe it or not, Apple Pay is not using the credit card expiry date but has a blanket expiry date of December 2023, which is why payments are starting to fail for lots of people.

To fix it, I was told to do the following. Go to Settings->Apple Id->Payment and Shipping and remove the payment method linked to Apple Pay. Then add the card details back as a new payment method but DO NOT LINK it to Apple Pay. The card should then start working again.

I won’t get into the craziness of this or the fact that Apple appear to have sat on this problem since mid-December when they started sending out emails saying upcoming payments were going to fail…..

Same thing here. Started middle December via an email I thought was suspicious as the app was just “renewed” without an issue per my bank statement but the email from Apple said there was a problem. I then used the card to rent a movie. No issue.

went to log into an app today and an Apple pop up informed me that my “expiration” date needed to be 2024 or later. Except, it is. Not sure why it said this. Except I can’t “edit” or “verify” anywhere. If I added the card again, it said I already added the card.

very concerning and frustrating.

oh, and I called Apple, they shared my phone screen and saw the email. They weren’t sure why I got that email after confirming the above. They concluded the email was sent in “error.” Doesn’t bode well. Still happening today!

I added a new iPad to my devices. Once I added debit card to new devices Apple Wallet, it said it expired across the new iPad, old iPad, and iPhone. The card is not expired. I removed and added card. It says the expiration date cannot be in the past, must be between 2024 and 2044. My card expires between those years, not in the past. Does Apple or anyone have a solution? Can't even download free Apps from the App Store. I did change Apple ID password. Relogged in on devices. Not sure if that created the problem. Now I have to enter the password manually, Touch ID is not active for App store but unlocks devices. I see a lot of people reporting similar problems.

I got the same type of email on Dec.30 but my credit card was not expiring for sometime.

I got the same type of email Jan.1 and when i checked my info it stated my credit card had expired but it had not.

I found your post and followed the instructions you were given and everything appears to be okay.

Thank you for posting this info.

Same issue, but support had me delete my card and now the system won’t let me readd it - it just says there is a problem with the card, except there isn’t and NO record if my add request actually gets sent to Apple, so they can’t see what error it is giving so have no idea how to help.

And my current support escalation person says no one else is reporting this problem and everyone else has been able to readd their cards just fine.

Is anyone else seeing this issue and unable to add the card back?

To clarify, I’m just trying to add it to my Payments, not even trying to involve Apple Pay at the moment, though this same card IS being used by Apple Pay…

Having the same problem. Because of it, I can’t even download free apps. I first assumed that my car details were outdated but it won’t let me edit them or even see what expiration and security pin are on file. When I tried adding a new payment with the correct details I got an error message telling me that that card is already added - so I can’t add it. It won’t let me delete the original card because I need to have payment on file.
