Camera roll disappeared after iOS 18.1 update on my iPhone 13 Pro Max

Just updated to IOS 18.1 and I believe I no longer have a camera roll?

This means I will now need to sell my iphone, apple watch, Ipad and so on. Can anyone recommend a good phone with a great camera that has a camera roll?

For me photos on my iphone is now a complete mess, Im not even gonna attempt to get my head around it, I have 56,000 photos on my phone and I use to know exactly where they all were, now i am without clue.

My recent days isnt in order, it starts a year ago and then moves on to today, yesterday etc.

I wasn't talking about "Recent Days. " I use the Library. It's at the very top of the screen. To the best of my knowledge, you can't move it. It doesn't actually say "Library" until you pull it all the way down, so it takes up the whole screen. When you pull it down, you'll also see the icons for sorting ascending or descending and also "Years" and "Months".

If you don't like "Recent Days," you can even turn that off. Go to the very bottom of the screen and tap on "Customize & Reorder." You can turn off things you don't want to see and rearrange the rest. But Library remains at the top.

Screen dumps, what i mean is when i use my phone to take a pic of my laptop screen (sort of screen dump i guess) to send over to a friend for him to see, im now stuck with a pic that i dont get an option to delete. I have to connect iphone to laptop, go into iphone on laptop, search for folder, search for photo and delete from there.

Are you taking the picture on your laptop and transferring it to the phone using a cable? That's the only time a photo becomes undeletable on an iPhone (and it's been that way for years). Anything you transfer directly from the computer to the iPhone can only be removed from the computer.

I completely agree that sometimes it is hard to get used to some of the new iOS features. I have been an iPhone user for many years and I still miss some functionality that is way gone now.

In iOS 18.1, Apple has redesigned the Photos app, introducing a new organizational structure that may have replaced the traditional "Camera Roll" with "Collections." If you're accustomed to accessing all your photos in a single, unorganized view, this change might be noticeable. However, you can still view all your photos by navigating to the "Recent Days" collection, which displays your photos chronologically.

Open the Photos app on your iPhone -> Tap on "Recent Days" to see your photos in chronological order.

You can then use the "Filter" button if needed.

Hope this helps!

IdrisSeabright sorry i cant work out how to quote you in my reply. Thanks for the LIBRARY thing, did not know about it. That seems to change things for me, with library visible and with use of options I think I'm sorted so thank you. Still hate the fact that camera roll has gone though as now easier to delete an image i wish to keep in error. Before I was confined to camera roll and could only delete within camera roll environment.

I'm glad it helped some.

To quote someone in a replay, tap the quotation marks icon in the toolbar at the bottom of the text entry window. I find it works best if I do that before beginning my own post.

Re screen dumps, all images are taken on the phone. What is happening is:

1) I take pics on phone.
2) I transfer images to laptop and place in a new folder called "London 2024" as example
3) I sync phone so that images go back onto phone and in a folder.

Now images are none delete-able on phone.

If you're connecting using a cable, that's correct.

Not noticed this before but then my latest pics have never been blended in with the pressure images I place in folders to keep safe. many thanks for your help.

I think that the people who will probably, in the long run, be the least happy with this version of Photos are the people who sync their photos between their computer and their iPhone using a cable. It appears that, as they did with contacts and calendars, Apple is trying to move people away from that, if only by ignoring the impact changes have on those functions. It won't have any effect on people like me who haven't synced an iPhone to a computer using a cable in years. But, for those that do, it's no doubt annoying and frustrating.

I don’t think that’s the case with me. I have sorted mine into recent first and I still get a mixture of recent and old.

I'm not talking about "Recent Days." I mean the library at the top of the screen. Until you pull it down, it just says "Photos" at the top. Pull it down until it says "Library" at the top. Then, tap on the sorting icon (bottom left) and make your selections. I have mine "Sorted by Date Captured." I've selected "All Items" under Filter. I have both Screenshots and Shared With You selected under View Options, but that's my personal preference.

The most recent photos will be at the very end of the list, just above everything else you have visible in Photos.

The Camera Roll was removed in iOS 13.

The current version of Photos is quite customizable. Start here:

I already switched from Airpod Max to Bose QuietComfort Ultra.

Not sure how it's relevant to this thread but, okay, great.

This "we decide what is best for you [in reality this often means what is worst for us" attitude of Apple makes me want to switch from Iphone Pro Max to another brand... Iphone cameras are also not the best either...

Apple doesn't read here for feedback or suggestions. You can, however, let them know your thoughts here:

With iOS 18.1.1 1. none of pictures taken with iphone appear anywhere.
2. I've deselected all custom options except Recent Days, so my view of photos is one large photo roll with Recent Days showing on the bottom. However not all days/dates/pictures are showing.
3. I have an app called camera+ which I now have to use exclusively if I want to see any new pictures I take with iphone. Camera+ creates it's own camera roll but it's easy to send pictures to default camera roll
4. The latest photos app is clearly not just a pain to use, but broken in many places, among them incomplete sync between phone and macbook. whoever the new hire was, they should fire them.

Thanks for the Camera+ tip, i'll take a look. In my photos app. LIBRARY - SET TO RECENT - I start at December 2024 (this month) then as i progress, I'm jumping to 2022 then 2019 and 2013 then back to 2024 then off we go again. With 54,000 pics, this just isn't helpful as when i jump from 2024 to 2013 and dont spot it, i see an image that i dont recognise, delete it, only to realise later on i needed to keep it.

With camera roll everything was recent so was then deleted or moved out of camera roll and placed in new folders on my PC then shared back to iphone.

With the new library its all getting mixed up, i just cant trust iphone to keep safe what is most sacred to me.

Your experience may be different because your settings are different from mine. You will note that I have it set to "Sorted by Date Captured." Perhaps try that.

If you could have added the "explanation" about why you used caps, you could also have simply edited your post to remove them. Then no explanation would have been necessary.

Caps explanation just seemed more fun but i guess its just best to stay on topic espesh as i'm the one needing help.

"Sorted by Date Captured." has put everything into date order with the exception of some concert photos that pop up first in my library taken 2 months ago. Ill look at the folder on my pc to see if there is something there causing this.

Thank you for your persistence, appreciated.

I have organized my 37000 pix in 400+ folders. If I want to add one more picture in one folder, the only way this is possible is that I resync with m Mac which takes hours because it deletes all the 37000 pix and the copies the 37001 pix.

Customizing does not, as expected, bring back the camera roll. As I mentioned before I "cut" the pix from my camera roll and organize them into folders by syncing with my mac. In my camera roll I only want to see new pictures not the 37,000 pictures I already sorted.

Moreover, the "Sort by Date Captured" that shows all 37,000 pictures does not show everything in sequence. For example a picture that was shot in 2019 and edited in Photoshop shows up with my 2018 pictures. I am aware Photoshop will interfere with the EXIF date but at least it should then use the saved as date which obviously cannot be in 2018 since the picture was taken in 2019 and edited after that, not before.

"Sort by Recently added" is a complete timeline disaster with so many pictures added at various point in time. I am afraid my next phone is no longer going to be an Iphone...

Good point. However, syncing via cable was always a pain, because the only way to remove a photo is to resync to the computer with the photo unchecked. And you also can’t edit them on the device, only on the computer. While they are viewable in the Photos app, they are not actually in the Photos database; they are in a separate sync database. 13 years ago Apple introduced iCloud as a replacement for cable syncing. I have 3 cameras plus my iPhone and iPad (Nikon DSLR and 2 action cameras). I can download from any camera to my computer, then simply select and drag the images onto the Photos icon on a Mac or iCloud for Windows, or onto icloud.com, and they all arrive automagically on my iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro. And they are editable on any platform or shared for any platform.
