Cannot update Apps, App opens instead

Tried updating some apps recently but have not been able to. When I tap the update button, it opens the app itself. In the case the app prompts me to update via a pop-up message, nothing happens after I tap update on the pop-up.

I Have an ipad 2 and I'm running iOS 7.0.4. thing to note, I did have restrictions enabled an had to enable them but still no luck.

ANy any help would be appreciated.

One thing I noticed was that devices running iOS 7.1 & higher didn't seem to have this problem. The other iPad my family has, a 3rd gen, running iOS 7.0.6 had the same problem. The iPhone's (5S) me and my wife have are running iOS 7.1 were fine.

But I finally gave up waiting for a fix from Apple and updated to iOS 8.0.2. Never had an issue upgrading to a new iOS until today. I did do a backup prior to the update. But something failed during the update process and bricked my iPad Air. After messing with it and finally able to to a restore, several games lost all the progress I had made.

I don't have this problem any more. But I'll bet $1 that Apple comes back and says to fix this issue, you have to go to iOS 8.x.x.

II'm having the same problem. But I am travelling for quite some time so am unable to do any kind of factory reset or back up. I haven't updated my OS since I left Australia round 3 months ago and only just started to get this issue maybe one week ago so I'm not sure how it's actually happened!

i also can't delete any of the affected apps because they are 'greyed out' as if downloading yet not doing anything.

I have the same problem on both iPhone 5s and iPad air (both iOS 8.02)

plus my search field is stuck on the first 2 letters of an app I searched sometime ago- just on the ipad for now-

I can write something different but every time I do a search it always starts with those letters 😠

I would like to be able to delete the App Store app or its prefs that I think it is corrupted

I tried all the possible solutions listed on this forum already and yesterday I thought deleting the apps and reinstalling all- what a mess if you have data linked to them!- I solved the problem

Today there are six new apps and I'm back to the greyed "Update all" even if I updated everything using iTunes.

or is iTunes's fault?!

APPLE where are you?!?

p.s. iPhone 4s with 7.0.6 doesn't have the same issues

Do the following ... backup and then reset to factory default condition. That will give you a clean operating system and ggI've you a new and clean App Store app.

LOL ... of course you'll have to go to the next revision that Apple puts out ... because that's where Apple puts the "bug fixes" ... :-) ...

Do the following yo get a clean system, so you won't be carrying forward your garbage and corrupt files to interfere with revision and installer ...

The support guy never came back with any clarification when I asked him what he was referring to when he said I have multile iStore accounts.

I'm not holding my breath on a solution. I'm just going to set it to auto-update and hope they update. Once I have a little bit of free time I'll make an appointment at the apple store and see what they have to say.

Work around:

Search the App Store for the app to be updated. You can use the search box at the top right of the update screen.

Tap the details for the app. That should give you an update button. If it opens the app instead, close it and do the same thing again. If you are asked to verify your account, that means you paid for the app. Do the verify procedure until you are asked to pay for the app. Then cancel. Do the update routine again, and you will be notified that the update is free, since you have already paid. I found that once I verified one paid app, I did not have to do any of the others.

When the update has begun, you can go back to you update list and do the next, etc.

It's been a fix to many many people here ... :-) ... here's one example ...

iPad 2 and iOS 8.0.2 Problems

result from long-term use, continuous upgrades, corrupted files and various glitches that happen over this long term use. You just need to get your iPad 2 back to FACTORY FRESH CONDITION to start out clean!

Here's one person's solution which will help a lot of iPad 2 users!

SOLVED: IOS 8 Issues on iPad 2:

I just returned home from a visit to the Genius Bar. Like you and many others, when I upgraded my iPad 2 to IOS 8, it became practically unusable. It was VERY slow, lagged whenever trying to to do anything. Lots of screen freezes and apps spontaneously crashing. I was convinced that the processor on the iPad 2 just couldn't handle the new IOS and I went in to see about restoring to IOS 7.

Thankfully, I was hooked up with a very sharp guy at the bar. The problem is not with the OS, it is with it being an *upgraded* OS. He used the analogy of when you had an older Windows computer and how over time (and over upgrades), they just tended to get slower and slower because of all of the garbage that was carried forward in the upgrades. At those times (and if you've ever had a Windows computer, you get this), the only thing that would speed it up would be to wipe the machine and do a fresh install of the current OS and then reload your apps, and the viola, everything would be fast again. Well, it turns out that IOS can suffer the same problems.

THE FIX: FIRST, be sure you have a current iCloud backup of your device. Connect your iPad to a computer that has a clean fresh copy of IOS 8 on iTunes (this is best done with a computer other than the one that you sync your device to because you DO NOT want to restore it from a back up just yet). Ideally, if you do this at an Apple store you'll be assured of the right version there and someone to answer any questions you might have along the way. You then hold the power and home button down to hard-reset the device and continue to hold them down until it reboots into recovery mode. You then follow the instructions on the computer to reinstall the OS on the device (which wipes everything from it and then reinstalls a clean copy of it). Once this is done (which only takes about 15 minutes), your device will reboot and ask you to set it up. Answer the questions about language, location, etc. and continue until it asks you to log into your iTunes account. Once you do that, it will ask if you want to either 1) Set it up as a new device, 2) Restore from iCloud, or 3) Restore from iTunes. Choose (2), restore from iCloud. This will ensure that it brings down "clean" copies of all of your apps and preferences rather than the potentially corrupted ones that might reside in your iTunes backup. That's it! It will take a few hours depending on how much data and apps you have, but I am happy to report that my iPad 2 is now running IOS 8 and it's running as fast as it ever did when it was brand new!

To sum it up, this process 1) Wipes your device and the garbage causing your problems, 2) Loads a clean and bug-free version of IOS 8 to your device, and 3) restores your apps and data so that it looks just like it did before the wipe, with the exception that it works now! :-)

Note also that by following this process you don't have to go through the painful and laborious process of reloading all of your apps, data and/or settings. iCloud takes care of all of that for you.
