Multiple Apps Freeze and Crash on iOS10

First, I found my new iPhone 7's Phone app freezes from time to time.

Sometimes it will crash and restart by itself. Sometimes I had to force it to quit.

After the app restart, it appears normal for a while and then freeze again in a few minutes.

This is completely unacceptable to me!!

Basically almost every time when I needed to make a phone call, I would find the app being frozen!!

Later I found the iPhone 6 I'm about to trade in has the same problem.

Second, when I was chatting with the Apple support using Safari on the phone, the Safari app crashed twice in the middle of the chat!!

Third, when I was trying to copy the crash report in Settings->Privacy->Diagnostic...->Diagnostic...->stack+MobilePhone... to send a friend who works for Apple, the Settings app keeps crashing!!!

Updating to 10.0.2 did not help at all.

Tried to reset everything and restart as a new phone and problem still there.

My Apple friend also reproduced the Settings crash on his own iPhone 7

I wasted at least 10 hours in the last two days to troubleshoot this problem.

I believe iOS10 is really messed up this time.

I hope they can fix this ASAP, otherwise I can see Apple in big trouble.

BTW, my family members' iPhone 5S and 5 seem not to be affected.

Some additional finding: The Settings app also crashes under iOS9

I just reproduced it on a friend's iPhone 6.

It also happens on iPhone 5 and 5s. Basically, every iPhone has this "feature"!

Everyone can try it:

Step 1: Open a *large* crash report file under:

Settings->Privacy->Diagnostic&Usage->Diagnostic&UsageData

pick one that starts with "stack+"

Step 2: Long press anywhere in the text to start selecting

Step 3: Quickly drag the end selector all the way to the bottom of the screen

The app should freeze now.

If it does not, try to scroll down and drag the selector a few more times, it will.

The phone is not frozen. You can still click the home button, switch to other apps.

Actually, if you wait for about 70 seconds, the app will unfreeze by itself.

If you switch away, or go to standby, the apple will crash.

Granted this is an obscure use case, but it may have some connection to the crash of some other apps.

The important thing is that it is *very reproducible*!

And it prevents me from sending the crash report to other people.

If we have some Apple people here, they should really take notes!!

There seems to be a solution at "Phone" app freeze on iOS 10

Here is what I learned:

Basically, you need to go to Settings->Mail->Accounts->...

to disable the syncing of "Contacts" from those accounts.

The biggest culprit is Exchange server and Hotmail accounts.

Gmail accounts can also be the cause.

iCloud account should be fine.

It seems iOS10 has problem syncing Contacts from some of those servers.

Hi I'm having the exact same issue with my iPhone 5 every since i updated to ios 10 and I can also confirm that this is an IOS 10 issue as I have rolled the ios back to ios 9 on my iPhone 5 and it worked flawlessly the way it use to work but unfortunately for me the latest back up was done on IOS 10 which cannot be restored on IOS 9 which left me with no other choice but to upgrade back up to IOS 10. Apple Needs to fix IOS 10 and stop wasting the communities time by giving them other fixes that don't work at all but waste everyone's time. APPLE Own up to your mistakes and spend more time on fixes for ios 10 rather than wasting time on making up excuses on what it possibly could be. 😠
