iPhone connects and disconnects from Mac

Hello,

When I plug in my iPhone to my Macbook pro, it repetitively connects and disconnects. Therefore I cannot charge my phone through my computer anymore.

I own this iPhone since decembre 2018, and this issue only appeared this week. However when I plug in my iPhone to a wall outlet, it charges perfectly. I also noticed that there is a lag time before my phone starts charging when connected to my Macbook (before disconnecting right away, and then reconnecting etc).

I tried to connect my iPhone to both USB ports of my Macbook, with many different Apple lightning cables and also my Anker cable (MFI certified), but the issue substains. I plugged in my mother's iPhone 6 to my Macbook and it charged perfectly. I plugged in my iPhone to my brother's former Macbook pro (15" from 2008) and my iPhone could charge normally.

Here everything I tried to resolve this issue (which failed by the way) :

- I shut down and turned on my computer and my phone.

- I reseted location and privacy of my phone (Devices rapidly disconnect/reconnect - Macbook Air Mid 2013).

- I also restored my phone.

Could anyone tell me a solution?

I specify that I have a 256Go iPhone X under IOS 11.2.5 and a 13" retina Macbook pro (mid 2014) under High Sierra 10.13.3.

But I do think I solved my problem, by something similar.

On the hunch that the computer was trying to set up a network connection via the phone while the phone was trying to do something else, I went into the network settings and found that in the list of services I had an entry for "Thunderbolt Bridge." I thought it was off, because it was listed as Inactive and the configuration I could see said "Configure IPv4: Off". But to make sure it was really completely disabled I pushed the "Advanced" button to change the configuration details (after clicking the lock icon and authenticating, of course). I changed "Configure IPv6" from "Automatically" to "Manually" and saved that.

After that, connecting my phone to the laptop finally worked. I was just now able to get some pictures off my phone onto the laptop.

It took a bit more than 51%, but this worked for me. I think I charged it up to 70% on my charger before moving it to my iMac, and that ended the eternal connect/disconnect it had been doing previously when I was plugging it into the iMac. I've seen similar behaviour on my car charger so now my suspicion is that the car charger just doesn't have enough juice for a heavily discharged phone. Interesting. Thanks very much for the helpful comment. 🙂

I had issues connecting my new (to me) iphone XS to my macbook pro running High Sierra (becasue I love how solid it runs). None of teh suggestions helped so I manually downloaded and reinstalled iTunes and when I did it told me I needed an extra update to make my iphone work with it. Suddenly everything started working. You can manually download iTines here - https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1977?locale=en_GB

This terminal command also worked for me! Much thanks! I've struggled with this for a long long time! And currently I have a failed battery on my Mid 2015 MBPro Retina so only running off of the external power supply and I can still charge my phone now! Thanks again (in this case to: rpmartins) for providing answers to keep us all going!

I've also tried all this, too. Only way I can get it to connect is using the activity monitor workaround.

Plugging my 7plus into this mid 2015 retina Pro, and waiting for it to start its incessant beeping, then opening activity monitor and force quit usbd makes it connect.

but - it doesn't 'properly' connect. phone is charging, but doesn't show up in photos to import. which is what I wanted to to really.

I was having this exact issue and my brother and I tried ever troubleshooting thing you could think of and nothing would work. I finally tried again just for the sake of it after my phone was had charged up some and it now connects with no problem! When I was initially trying to connect my phone was close to dying and only had about 13% remaining, but after I got 50+% CHARGED no issues what so ever!

I HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE!!!

This has happened to me so many times and I could never pinpoint the variables until this super helpful post! Thank you to all that have weighed in on this.

Here's what consistently works for me nowadays with my iphone7. If my phone is charged above 50% and my phone disconnects, then I need to delete the "usbd" process from the Activity Monitor on the receiving computer. If my phone is charged below 50% (and that battery indicator is not always that accurate), then charging my phone works. I did not realize that the power level on my phone would make a difference, but it does.

I also am having this issue when connecting both my iPad Mini 4 and iPhone XS, and killing the usbd process on my Macbook Pro also solves it.

But here's an unexpected twist: I only see the problem when using the lightning cables from those devices. If I use a lightning cable from my iPhone 6, it works fine every time, without having to kill the usbd process.

Can anyone else reproduce that? If so, maybe it's being caused by a characteristic of newer lightning cables?
