iPhone X wifi issues

I've got this new iPhone X since November 7th. From day one, Wifi would toggle on and off causing phone to not respond to commands once every 3 days or so. This has been happening more frequently now than before. It used to happen once every 3 days and I'd have to try the hardest (phone was very slow responding to commands when it happens) to power the phone off and power it back up again. It would then act normal for another 2 - 3 days. This is annoying now as it happens once every 24 hours or so. I've tried everything including resetting the phone, restoring it from backup, etc. This, I now honestly believe, is a hardware issue, similar to the wifi button grayed out issue with iPhone 4. I have had almost every generation of iPhones and they are generally reliable but now this is getting very annoying. My wife has the same exact phone and it does not give her the same issues. Will Apple please look into this and help me resolve this sooner than later please. Thank you.

iPhone X, iOS 11.2.5, 256G

I went to the Genius Bar at the Apple store and thank goodness I got an employee who knew his stuff! I let him know about the whole issue I was having with my WIFI at home and how I was trying the WIFI at the apple store and I was not having any issues like I have at home.

The first thing he asked me was what kind of router I had (I have Uverse Internet so ATT provided me with their router), he said there are two WIFI frequencies you router broadcasts and did I know which one I was connected to? I said I have no clue, I just sign in to my WIFI network name and put in the password.

He said your router has two WIFI frequencies, one is 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The iPhone X is the first iPhone that has to use 5GHz frequency (if it uses the 2.4 GHz frequency, it will work but cause it to drop, but the phone stays connected to that radio frequency). He ran a diagnostic on my iPhone and said my phone is fine. He asked if my WIFI network name was the same or different name regarding 2.4GHz and 5GHz. I checked my router's info, and it has the same name. He said I would have to name the 5 GHz different from the 2.4 GHz cause my iPhone connects to the first available network (2.4 GHz - since both frequencies were named the same thing, I couldn't tell which one it was connecting to). I renamed my 5 GHz and up until this point, everything is working fine and have had no WIFI dropping issue with my iPhone!

I told them that guy who helped me out deserves a **** bonus!!! I hope you guys understood what I am saying, if not let me know, I will try to explain it better.

But this should RESOLVE the issues we are experiencing with WIF dropping.

My WiFi issue is as follows:

I have an iPhone X (Silver) 256GB

This is what happens multiple times throughout the day:

*WiFi drops and the phone does not jump over to cellular even though I have WiFi Assist turned on.

*The WiFi bar/fan on the top-left shows I am connected and is strong.

So how do I know that it's the WiFi that is dropping? I play a word game where I compete with random people. To find a new random player I have to pull down and the search begins. When I pull down sometimes, it just hangs forever. Like I said the WiFi bars show strong but nothing happens. I found that if I pul Control Center down and tap on Airplane mode, wait a few seconds and then tap on Airplane mode to turn it off, that fixes the issue. So when the WiFi just drops off on me in no matter what app I am using, I just pull down Control Center and toggle Airplane mode and then I am okay.

This is obviously annoying, so I have done the following with ZERO success:

1. Hard restart the phone (Vol Up then Vol down then hold side button till you see the Apple logo).

2. Reset Network Settings

3. Called AppleCare. They instructed me to backup the phone and then do a factory restore. They further instructed to NOT restore my backup on the phone, but instead to test the phone for a whole day or 2 and see if that resolves the issue. I did as instructed, but the WiFi dropped on me. So I called them back and they told me to take it to the Apple Store.

4. I went to the Apple Store and they replaced the phone with a new one. This was 2 weeks ago. I am STILL experiencing the problem.

I found this thread today because I did a Google search for the issue. Normally, that would have been one of the first things I would have done, but I just felt sure it was a hardware issue after resetting the network settings AND when I called AppleCare the rep I spoke to sounded generally shocked at the issue and told me that it is absolutely a unique issue and that she has never encountered it with any other customer and could find no record of it happening to anyone else on file. So that made me confident that I just had a one-off bad phone and a replacement would absolutely do the trick. But now since I have a new replacement phone and the issue is still happening, I decided to do a Google search and viola! I found all of you folks with the same issue!! I will be calling AppleCare again tomorrow and I will keep you all updated on my case. Stay tuned!

I'm starting to agree with a couple of other posts that there might be a hardware problem, traded in my first X after losing internet capabilities over and over, plus having the calendar turn itself off and losing my schedules a couple of times.

The new one, no problem so far with the calendar, but the keys stuck when typing emails and texts and the internet has disappeared a couple of times requiring the network reset,

As promised, I am following up with my issue. To catch you up, here's what I've done so far:

But after 1 day with the new phone the problem appeared again with the same level of frequency.

5. I called Apple to report this and they told me to bring it to the store again.

6. I went to the Apple Store and a tech did a diagnostics and everything checked out fine. He went on to explain that it is not likely a hardware issue since they replaced the phone. But I went to tell him that it MUST be a hardware/manufacturing issue affecting some phones and I am just one of the unfortunate recipients of the defective units. This must be clearly seen from the troubleshooting that I've done to this point, especially the one where I restore the phone to factory default and use the phone just like that without restoring my backup and it STILL drops the WiFi whether I am at home or on a friend's WiFi or at Starbucks. The Apple tech reluctantly agreed with me but said that since Apple Support has never checked my network, I should go back home with the phone and have them do that. ...sigh.

7. I went home and called Apple Support and referred them to the notes on my account which instructed them to check my network. They ran a diagnostics and everything checked out fine. So the Apple rep told me to bring the phone back to the store. : \

8. I have an Apple Store appointment for Wednesday.

I also neglected to mention to you all that I have multiple devices running on my home network. None of them experience any dropping of WiFi at any time. The devices running on my network are as follows: 2 iPads, an iPhone 5s, an iPhone 6 Plus, a Macbook Pro, a Macbook Air, a Dell laptop, a few Nest cams, 2 Android tablets. The only device that drops WiFi is my iPhone X. It is VERY clear that, at minimum, there is a hardware/manufacturing problem with some iPhone X units. But no question about it, what I am experiencing is a hardware issue.

As promised, I will keep you all posted.

If you go to the Public Beta do not post here regarding your usage, you will have to enter a non-disclosure agreement to get it and won't be able to post here in a public area.

As there are literally millions of users that are using iOS 11.4 with an iPhone X I doubt there is some global bug that is affecting the iPhone X that they are going to discover. I haven't kept up with your saga but does this happen with every router that you ever connect with? Or just the one at your residence?

Jul 13, 2018 11:29 AM in response to deggie

The issue occurs when connected to various routers (home, friends home, Starbucks). You will see the extensive steps and thorough troubleshooting (which is bullet pointed) that I (and Apple) performed in my post on page 3 and 4 of this thread.

When I test with the beta, it is not at all my intention to post here regarding my usage as you suggest. Instead, I intend to simply state that the problem no longer exists since installing the beta OR that it still exists. By doing so, if the problem is eliminated after installing the beta, it will convey some hope to the many people who are experiencing this issue (as is manifest from this thread and many other threads on many other forums) that the GM release of iOS 12, coming this fall, "seemingly" resolves the issue.

I have been having the same issue with my iPhone X with wifi at home! I have done everything, restarting the network settings and it is still happening. I was on with Apple support 3 weeks ago and they said it was probably my home network and to contact my internet provider, I was like, it's not my internet, it's your phone cause I use to have an android and never had any issue with the same router I use at home!!! No wifi issues at all!!

Did you manage to resolve this issue? I have exactly the same thing, happens constantly that it says connected to wifi and it is not connected. It shows wifi as off in settings while it is on on when you do the pull over settings menu. You try to turn it on and then it turns off again. I did a reset, now reset network settings, it is a hopeless affair. I thought it was an app, but now I'm more thinking of a faulty chip. A friend of mine has exactly the same while the phone is working fine for others. What did you tell the genius providers? I'm afraid that I will go there and it will be one of the rare instances that it actually works...

Can you please describe the exact symptoms of your Wi-Fi issues before you deleted apps? Thank you. My issue has been normal working Wi-Fi suddenly turning into toggle mode (between connected Wi-Fi and disconnected Wi-Fi very rapidly) which makes the phone freeze. One time the freeze led to a complete black screen unresponsive to any buttons but when I had someone dial my black screen phone it would still ring. This issue would repeat after about 24 - 48 hours of normal operation.

Thank you! What you described fits the bill of my issues. I have the Wi-Fi button unresponsive issue, Wi-Fi connected but it shows LTE instead, etc., yes, when the Wi-Fi toggling problem happens. I suspect you had the same exact issue I did. This is so not like Apple, I agree, especially on a device so expensive like an iPhone X. I hope all others who experience the same issue should all reference this discussion thread and advise Apple that it is not an isolated incident and that more people out there are having the same annoying problem. Hopefully, Apple will prioritize this and find a solution sooner than later.
