I have asked this question before and got a response from Eric Root and followed his suggestions. I am still getting beachballing and a poor performance from the report. What else can I do to get this machine up to speed? Here is the current report:

EtreCheck version: 4.1.3 (4A188)

Report generated: 2018-03-13 11:07:53

Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

Runtime: 9:02

Performance: Below Average

Problem: Beachballing

Description:

Frequently when opening apps.

Major Issues:

Anything that appears on this list needs immediate attention.

No Time Machine backup - Time Machine backup not found.

Minor Issues:

These issues do not need immediate attention but they may indicate future problems.

Clean up - There are orphan files that could be removed.

Unsigned files - There is unsigned software installed. They appear to be legitimate but should be reviewed.

Low performance - EtreCheck report took over 5 minutes to run. This is unusual.

I haven't done one in quite some time; however, when I do, I erase the drive and install the OS. I then drag 'drop my files/pics/whatever. Applications are a different matter - I'd either download them fresh from the app store (if that is where I got them) or - in my case - I install them fresh from the install DVD they came on (yes, I still have those) along with the registration key. Some apps cannot simply be copied over - they would not work, so it depends on what the app is and how it was installed to begin with.

Mar 17, 2018 12:50 PM in response to Eric Root

Hi Eric,

After doing the clean install, I was going to transfer from my backup disk my mail and safari. The popup window said I could not do it. I have an enormous amount of information in my mail; e.g., 10 years of archived mail. Also, in Safari I have it all set up with my favorites, etc. Also I do not like the new layout of mail and other apps in the clean install. I have rebooted the machine using my backup disk and I am satisfied with it. Now I want to migrate the backup disk to the HD and see if I can clean things up that way. I am more than willing to get rid of some of the Safari extensions and other apps. But how do I get rid of the offending clutter in the Library that is causing the slowdown? I eliminated the suggested apps that I was advised to do in this conversation, but the residual "stuff" that is causing the slowdown remains as I can see in the etrecheck report. Any thought or suggestions is appreciated.

Mar 17, 2018 2:12 PM in response to Eric Root

Hello again Eric,

I do not know if you got my last reply since I do not see it in the thread of this conversation. I did the clean install However, when I tried to move my mail and safari apps from my SD clone to the clean install, It would not let me do it. I have over 10 years of archived emails I need and then there are all my bookmarks in Safari. Also, all of my preferences; e.g. screen saver, desktop background. Moreover, I do not care much for the new layout of the OSX. I am more comfortable with the familiar. I got my first Mac in 1984 and this is the first time I have had so much trouble. So far I have started up from my clone. I am tempted to use migration assistant to get everything back together again on the HD and just suffer. Any ideas?

Mar 17, 2018 2:24 PM in response to Tom Smith3

A couple of ideas:

You could just export your bookmarks, save it, and drag 'n drop it to the new one. Once on that desktop, you can just import them to Safari.

As for background and other preferences, I prefer to simply set them up fresh. Those panes can change from OS to OS version, so it's best to start fresh.

And, Setup Assistant is the same process as Migration Assistant except for the fact that it is only offered during initial install/setup and sets up the same user account (MA sets up a second account if one has already set one up usually resulting in two user accounts).

Re. "Safari apps" - do you mean extensions or plug ins? If so, make sure they aren't outdated; I'd set them up fresh. And, try to see if you really need all of them. They all need resources to run.

You have a slow 5400 rpm hard drive which does everything (read/write) 30+% slower than a default 7200 rpm drive in a 27" iMac. It is quite simply slow (I could not stand it and sold the Mini I had bought after 3 months). It will help not to have too many things running at the same time: open an app, work on it, and then quit it before opening another. You also do not need that many launch and log in items - they can launch when you actually need them. See if those ideas plus getting rid of the unmentionable and worthless "cleaning" apps improves things.

Mar 18, 2018 12:25 PM in response to Eric Root

Hi Eric,

I was hoping that it would work booting from the SD clone and then just dragging and dropping select items from the applications folder; e.g., Mail, Safari, System preferences and iphoto, etc.. After I did that I rebooted from the HD clean Install and found that it did not work; that is to say, my archived mail did not appear and Safari was empty of bookmarks and system preferences did not transfer. What I am thinking of doing now is opening the Library on the SD clone and picking out the items that etrecheck said were there. I know there are a lot of Launch daemons that need to be removed; however, I found launch agents in the library, but no launch daemons ... where may they be? Also, what do you think about manually cleaning things up this way?
