10.13.4 Broke BootCamp Bluetooth

Greetings!

This is super urgent! I need help! Fresh macOS 10.13.4 update most likely installed some new firmware because now I cannot connect to my keyboard or mouse in Windows 10! I tried re-pairing, reinstalling drivers, rebooting and resetting PRAM. Devices seem paired, but they never connect. They connect and disconnect every second to be precise.

I need Windows 10 working by Monday. Kindly give an advice, please.

Thank you.

Sorry for the duplicate post, it won't allow me to edit or delete the previous one.

It’s taken a while...as it always does.

Right, with MacOS 10.13.3 installed from my Time Machine backup, and having installed Windows 10 Pro without running any updates everything worked fine.

I then ran Windows update and installed the following...

- Definition update for Defender Antivirus (KB2267602)

- 2018-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 version 1709 for x64 systems (KB4088776)

- Windows malicious software removal tool x64 - March 2018 (KB890830)

- 2018-03 Security update for Adobe Flash Player (KB4088785)

- Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based systems (KB058043)

Having installed these and rebooted, both the keyboard and mouse immediately stopped working.

I then booted back into MacOS and you’ve guessed it, the mouse didn’t work without having to re-pair it.

I found that in Device Manager-Bluetooth, for every device listed, in the events tab there is a message saying “device xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx requires further installation”. It means nothing to me but someone more knowledgable might be able to get something from it.

I’m now reinstalling Windows 10 and will not update it until I know this is fixed. I really only use it for occastional gaming and for browsing mainstream websites related to gaming so I’m willing to risk it.

I might even install MacOS 10.13.4 as I now think it’s not actually this that is the issue, it’s definitely a Windows update problem. Perhaps an update to the Bootcamp drivers is in the offing but for now, it’s most definitely broken. If I try it and it works I'll let you know.

Cheers

I’m 99.9% certain I have a backup with 10.13.3 on it. I’ll try tomorrow and let you know.

I had tried it once already and it worked in Windows until I ran Windows update which included 1709. It was after the reboot part of the installation that it stopped working.

My plan is to install Windows with 10.13.4 on the Mac side and see if it works without installing Windows updates. I’ll then try the time machine backup, if that is 10.13.3 then I’ll try the Windows update and see what happens. It’s going to be tomorrow afternoon GMT before I can give you more info.

Cheers.

Ps The guy at Apple support reckons you CAN roll back your OS to that your machine shipped with, which I’m sure was 10.13.3, or older. I tried his way but was in a rush and it didn’t work. Maybe I did something incorrectly.

So, even though I’ve followed the method again, I’ve ended up with 10.13.4 as the OS. There is absolutely no way this machine shipped with that so clearly this rollback to the OS at point of shipping doesn’t work.

I’m trying my time machine backup but am pretty certain that will also be 10.13.4, although I don’t know why, as it was made before I updated. All I’m left with then is not installing any Windows updates. I’m gonna be pretty hacked off if none of this works.

Had the same issue with MMouse 2.

Actually had problems with Mac and Windows Bootcamp, depending on remedies attempted on the respective platform.

It started about a week ago when the drag-and-drop function in Bootcamp suddenly disappeared. Then after updating to 10.13.4 it completely broke down.

Even after turning off power to the Mouse it showed up as paired or even connected. Uninstalling it in Device Manager did nothing as it always popped right back up (even when the mouse was powered off). Only when I reset/removed everything Bluetooth related in Mac did the mouse on longer appear in Windows...which I thought was very strange.

And the problem appears to only be related to Apple Bluetooth devices. My old Dell Bluetooth Travel Mouse works perfectly in both Mac and Windows.

I agree that recent MS security patches combined with 10.13.4 Mac update created these issues and hope a software fix will be released soon.

Having installed these and rebooted....it doesn’t work. No response from either the mouse or the keyboard.

I’m playing around with it now to try and figure out which of the above updates is the culprit.

Best of luck.

It is KB4088776 most likely. I am rock solid confident it worked for three days after it and it was was the only update I installed it two weeks. And obviously I rebooted multiple times and everything worked. Not to mention I cannot uninstall it, after last attempt system didn't boot up.

It really seems to me that 10.13.4 indeed installed some firmware which is now conflicting with one of Windows updates. And sadly we're not getting an easy fix.

Apr 3, 2018 9:13 AM in response to desmortum

That's the thing though, I'm now running 10.13.3 and have exactly the same problem which only manifests itself after installing those Windows updates.

I've just spoken with the senior advisor from Apple and he's taken the details and will feed it back. He also said it might well be passed on to Microsoft too.

Good luck with it!

I think you're right, i.e. we have no fix.

What happens with me is that even if I have my MT2 switched on when I boot into Windows, when I go back to macOS, I have to use a mouse to login, and then re-pair the MT2.

Another strange thing that happens, is that my MT2 keeps being renamed. In macOS, I rename it as 'Magic Trackpad 2', but when going back and fore between Windows and macOS, it gets renamed back to 'Iain Mackenzie's Trackpad'.

Once, it was even renamed to 'System Administrator's Trackpad'!

The only way I can make things work at the moment, is to switch the MT2 off BEFORE I boot into Windows and use a mouse.

Hey.

You’re right, there is no fix. Until either Apple and or/Microsoft update the current software versions we’re all effectively stuck where we are, which is rubbish. I’ve got an ISO of Windows 10 1709 that works and I’ve forced Windows to not auto update (same for HS & 10.13.4) and it’s all good.

It’s not ideal but it works, for now. If it ain’t broke...
