can not sync photos with ios 11.3 and itunes 12.7.4

I downloaded itunes 12.7.4 and ios 11.3 and now I can not sync my photos to my iphone X, Iphone 8 plus, Ipod Touch or Ipad Pro with my PC running Windows 10. It gets to Step 5 of 6 and just sits there frozen at "Reading Photo's from "Pictures" and will not finish the transfer of the photos to my devices and finish the sync. I did not have a problem until the new operating system was released. Anyone having this issue and is there a fix??

iPhone X, Windows 10

So until Apple fixes this, here is a workaround: Downgrade to iTunes 12.7.3! It definitely is an iTunes 12.7.4-issue. After downgrading to 12.7.3, everything is working again.

So you have to manually uninstall 12.7.4 and download 12.7.3 from Apple (just google for the version number, you'll find it).

Problem is that you have to go back to an auto-saved iTunes Library file from when you had 12.7.3 installed. So after installing but before starting 12.7.3 you have to first rename the current "iTunes Library.itl" file to something like "iTunes Library 12-7.4.itl" and then go to the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and take the presumably latest autosaved itl-file and move it one folder up and rename it to "iTunes Library.itl".

(Of course this means that you'll lose all changes you made to your iTunes library since updating to 12.7.4)

Tech support just called me back. Say Engineering needs more time to evaluate all my logs and data. We set a call back for another week. At this point, I am left with a sense that apple does not really have a handle on this. My tech and I suggested that this problem could go two possible ways. (1) Apple finds a/the problem and issues a fix or (2) they may need to come back and do further online work with me to help identify/isolate problem.

On the disquieting side, I am getting a sense that this may take some time. I am OK for a while but sure hope this does not go on longer than another week. I also am a bit concerned that apple does not seem to be monitoring the community page for issues. I hope I am wrong.

Still having this issue... seems Apple aren't bothered to fix it. Have been in contact with their support & directed them to the multiple forums here to show that the issue is affecting a number of users & the likely cause is the latest version of iTunes. They refused to accept that it is the fault of iTunes & suggested I re-install iTunes (it didn't work). Doubt it will be fixed any time soon.

So glad to find out it wasn't only me. Same issue. Stuck on reading photos for hours. I'm IOS 11.3, iphone X, latest itunes upgrade to 12.7.4. I'm afraid to downgrade because I have 7000 pos and 8000 songs. Im hoping for a quick fix with a 12.7.5 update that fixes the bug. Irritated lately with these updates that ruin stuff. Guess I'll keep checking back.

I now can't get photos removed from my iPad Air 2 or iPhone 6S. In the Photos app, my albums are gone but all my photos sorted by year still remain (left-most Photos button within Photos app). iTunes shows them as taking up space on my devices. I've tried downgrading iTunes and still was not able to properly sync photos. I've tried toggling the Sync Photos option in iTunes with no success. I've considered resetting my devices and would prefer to test with my iPad, but I have the T-Mobile free data for life and am concerned that I may lose it if I reset my device.

Did not work. Created an empty folder, selected it as the only folder to sync. iTunes claims a successful sync, no folders (including this empty one) appearing in "Albums." All the old synced folders (from Windows Pictures directory) are missing, yet the their contents are still appearing in the "Photos" section. A previous post mentioned manually managing these on the iPhone. These photos are not in the camera roll and subsequently not in the DCIM directory so I cannot just manually removed them. They were added by iTunes and must be removed by iTunes. However, iTunes is an utter failure.

I see what you mean. This is actually exactly how I sync my pictures. I too manually managed the synced folders. I synced about 10,000 / 20,000 photos/videos on my PC. I actually can't achieve the end result you mention though. Both my iPad and iPhone either error out or sync/remove nothing. I've synced this way since 2012 and this is the first I've every had any major trouble with it.

THis is ridiculous, Apple are a bunch of liars. There own website promotes a feature that simply does not work. I am completely unable to sync the photos on my computer, to my iPad via iTunes, it simply crashes, and has done for months now, and is a complete disaster.

Here is apple promoting the feature:

https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201313

Which states clearly:

Sync your photos manually with iTunes

You can set up iTunes to sync photos to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from the Photos app, or from a folder on your computer. Each time that you sync your iOS device with iTunes, the photos and videos on your iOS device update to match the albums on your computer. If you have photos on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that aren't on your computer, follow these steps to import them.

This is absolute rubbish, this doesnt work, hasnt worked for a very long time, and this forum is completely full of these same comments, constantly, hundreds, perhaps thousands of them, and apple still promotes the feature as at today, that hasnt worked and hasnt been fixed, no matter how many posts, bugs and complaints are lodged.

Apple are just a bunch of lying thieves that sell something they cannot provide. Whats worse, nobody from Apple will respond, and no amount of bugs, reports, or information submitted to Apple for nearly a year or more, has gotten this feature fixed.

Liars and thieves.

The feature does usually work, this is the first time in my years of using iPhones (since the second iPhone release) that there has been a problem. I wasn't aware there were thousands of posts on here about this.

Since day one my iTunes has been set to manually manage all my devices (I've upgraded my phone with each release up to the 7 plus, have had each issue of the iPod Touch, two iPad minis, iPad Air, IPad Pro) and no problems at all with synching photos.

So the feature does work, but for some reason it is not working for you - do photos synch if you do not manually manage your device - obviously you can't test this out at the moment due to the problems but hopefully Apple will update the Windows release of iTunes soon so when that happens worth trying.

I am assuming you do have your iTunes summary page for your device set to manually manage (in the options menu, not the manually back up link in the back up menu) - my own set up has that and back up to this computer (I don't use the cloud).

I’m having the exact same problem with my iPhone X I’m so glad you have spoken about this on here hopefully it will get an update soon as I can’t synch photos to my iPhone X it gets stuck and you can leave it for as long as you like it won’t get past that stage come on Apple get it fixed updates are supposed to improve your experience. It’s only since I updated my iphone to iOS 11.3 and updates ITunes to the lastest version.

Thanks to the workaround by Philip and tt2 so after almost 24 hours my new iphone 8 plus can finally be sync'ed with my music and photos on my iTunes (on Windows 10).

So, you might consider give it a try as a proper release to fix this showstopper in iTunes might not be imminent.

As others have mentioned, it's just sloppy programming and lack of proper QC that led to so many man hours being wasted on both the end-users and also with Apple support 😟

I usually wait for few months before executing any upgrade on both iTunes or iOS but the new iphone 8 plus requires the iTunes be upgraded to 12.7 in order to proceed.

It's annoying and frustrating that it forces us to upgrade to a version which does not work and remove apps etc from iTunes.

Good luck.
