Can't install macOS High Sierra 10.13.4

I downloaded the update via the App Store but upon restart to install the update there is no chime and the screen is black with only a white cursor and no options to do anything. Nothing happens even after a long wait. Same thing with each of several repeated attempts to install the update. Also downloaded and tried to install with the combo updater but the result was the same.

From this state, I can shutdown the computer (by holding down the power button) and then restart the computer, which boots up with 10.13.3 with no problem.

Thanks D for the Recovery Mode tip. I was able to install 10.13.4 on my Mac!!!

Here are the steps that I took:

1. Press power button to start your Mac and immediately hold down Command + R until the Apple logo and progress bar appear

2. Once the boot up is completed, it may ask you to choose your language (in my case "English")

3. On next screen, it will ask you to to choose:

---------------
Restore from Time Machine Backup

Reinstall macOS

Get Help Online

Disk Utility

---------------

Pick "Reinstall macOS"

4. It then will ask you to choose the hard drive to install on (in my case "Macintosh HD")

5. The computer will reboot several times and it took me around 30 min to complete the installation

Good luck everyone.

I had the following problems. This is my worst experience ever not only with an Apple device but with any other device.

  • 10.13.3 Update is not properly installed
  • the system cannot start anymore
  • I can only start in safe mode by pressing Shift button
  • I try to install in safe mode, but it does not help.
  • Resetting NRAM does not help
  • Any solutions I try to find on the internet (WHY THERE'S NO OFFICIAL ARTICLE THAT COULD HELP??) do not help
  • In recovery mode (Command+R) restoring OS does not work because 'The recovery server could not be contacted'.

A common solution to fix date/time did not work probably because my date and time was OK

  • Disk Utility does not find any problems
  • Downloading full High Sierra installer so that I could create a bootable drive to reinstall everything.. guest what..
does not work, because it just does not download it. It downloads only 400+KB of 2 skeleton folders.
  • Well, at this point I don't know what to do and click all available options.

So what helped:

  • In safe mode I select the first option in the top menu.. something like Select Startup Disk. I select my only disc named MacOS 10.13.3. It asks for some confirmations. Then reboots and voila, I have a normal boot of 10.13.3.
  • Of course, I'm not going to spend my time on trying to update my Mac anymore.
  • Now I can download full High Sierra installer and can create a bootable drive. Of course, I'll do that.

I've spent 4 days of my life for nothing. Official support articles did not help.
I'm angry.

Exact same here, only on a 2012 MBA. I had to revert to the latest local Time Machine snapshot, using CMD+R, booting into recovery mode. I will try one manual install with the combo installer. If that fails too, I'll be sticking with the 10.13.3 for the forseeable future. I do not have time for this nonsense and risk potential data loss because of Apples failure to put out an update that actually works.

You can save the log for future reference and send it to Apple if you so wish.

You can change the update settings from the App Store preferences. However this will have no effect now.

You can stop the process temporarily, but you cannot uninstall the updater. You should not, as this isn't a solution.

Yes, starting over is always a good try if all fails. If you have a complete backup, I would suggest you to do so.

You can always wait for another update to come. Meanwhile you could try re-formatting your disk (don't forget the backup) and reinstall OS X all over again. And this time you could try the combo update, safe mode, etc. as mentioned earlier by others.

I gave it a good 30 min or so to shutdown but it didn't. And didn't see the revolving timer clock also, just black screen with white cursor. From what I read, the only two solutions that can really fix the problem so far is to completely wipe out the hard disk and do a clean install or bring the computer in for Apple to do it. Definitely not going that route yet. I'm going to look for other solution for now (will post if I find one) and maybe try to wait for next update to see if it will make the problem go away.

I am still in contact with a senior advisor at Apple. Another phone meeting is scheduled for early next week. My advisor had sent logs and some other information to a software engineer who thought the issue my be caused by a firewall from a third party application. To test, we deleted several apps, but the problem persisted. I uploaded a new log and we're waiting for a response and hopefully direction from an engineer that will solve the problem without having to completely erase and reinstall. I can do it if necessary, but I'm hoping for and easy solution.

I'll report back when I know more.

Same here. But for me it won't boot in to 10.13.3 normal mode (I can force it to boot into 10.13.3 safe mode), but it always boots into recovery mode and gives a message box "The macOS installation couldn't be completed." with buttons to Shut Down, Restart, Save Log, and View Log. So I clicked Save Log, but what am I supposed to do with the saved log?

BTW, my machine is a 2015 MBPR with 1TBSSD.

"Password: I can't get a cursor to show so I can enter a password (my admin password, I assume)."

Yes. This is the admin password you need to enter. Don't worry, just type the password carefully whenever it asks. Terminal will detect your input even though it shows nothing. This is the way you enter admin password in terminal.

Just type the password, and hit return.
