icloud for windows keeps asking for password

I am using a Dell i7 laptop with fully-updated Windows 10 Home.

Computer runs antivirus and Malwarebytes.

I have been using iCloud for Windows on my device for years, BUT

For the last 48 hours, every time my computer awakes from sleep or is rebooted, I am asked for my iCloud for windows password and my two-factor authentication code.

I have uninstalled all Apple software and freshly reinstalled just iCloud for Windows, but the issue persists.

I spent an hour+ on the phone with Apple Support yesterday, but no solution yet, so I am turning to the Community for some ideas.

Thanks to all!

I was able to uninstall using Control Panel as an Administrator--you can't uninstall using Windows 10 Settings. After I uninstalled I went back to the older v6.2 as mentioned here and the popups have stopped. Good luck.

In my case this was due to having multiple entries for same Windows PC under Settings, iCloud - device list on my iPhone

Problem happened in April immediately after the 1803 version of Windows 10 was dropped

Problem happened again today after I updated the BIOS version of my laptop

The solution both times was shut down the PC, delete all entries for the PC hostname from the iPhone device list, then boot up the PC and sign back into iCloud. Problem solved.

I have 2FA enabled on my iCloud account.

Hi Everbody,

I've got a workaround while Apple does not fix the problem.
I uninstalled the version of Icloud for windows 7.4.
Then I downloaded an older version, 6.2.2.
At https://www.downloadcrew.com/article/25317-icloud_control_panel_for_windows you can download it. I installed and followed the instructions to install in Outlook. Now it's working.
We're going to have to wait for Apple to pity us and get the issue straight. Do not forget to turn off the automatic update in Apple Software Update. For the update we must do it manually.

That did it - i also had my windows desktop and windows laptop name multiple times in my icloud on the iphone (3 times desktop and laptop name there). Deleted all of them, and then restarted both PC and laptop, and logged in again in the icloud on PC and laptop - now everything is fine again, no more stupid logging in on every restart. i also had updated my bios and windows updates as they come...

Why apple doesnt get it solved to delete the old logins when you update windows oder your bios is strange for me...

but he, PROBLEM is SOLVED and easy if you know how :-)

Checking with everyone because something happened today and it all suddenly stopped doing the repeated requests for password (at least for now). I am also using an Office 365 account on this machine that was acting up because I, as the administrator, activated a Multi-Factor Authentication on the account that then failed to install correctly on Outlook. It took a lot of doing, but had to basically completely remove the profile, remove Multi-Factor Authentication, and recreate the profile in Outlook, iCloud complaining all the way, before it would be usable again. After that, however, iCloud also stopped asking for a password. Coincidence?

None of those fixes worked for me 😟

However, I discovered that as long as the iCloud control panel (settings) is open on my computer, I never get asked to enter my password again!

So, until this is fixed, I just leave the iCloud window open and minimized.

Not a great solution, but it works.

I did notice another weird thing.

All of my Windows 10 PCs are now shown as running Windows 6.2 in the device list. They used to be showing as Windows 10. I wonder if this is related to the problem?

To all,

I heard again from my Apple Support contact this evening. He had heard back from "Engineering" about the files I had uploaded.

The advice from engineering - which I declined to do since v6.2 works fine - was to:

  • Uninstall all Apple software
  • Uninstall some other files
  • Make changes to the "Windows Installer Service"
  • Install the new version of iCloud for Windows and it would now work.

I told the contact that I was clearly not alone in experiencing the issue I reported, as all of you have indicated. He is going to communicate that information and that v6.2 works fine to "Engineering."

Until a working update arrives, I will stick with the old version.

Thanks, everyone, for your insights.

I have an interesting experience with the iCloud app on Windows 10. I have had exactly the same errors reported here: the app asks multi times per login to my office computer for AppleID password. It accepts it each time (after entering 2 factor auth code), but then reprompts. FYI I have Windows 10 Pro 1708.

I tried uninstalling as has been mentioned here. INTERESTNG RESULT: My icloud mail account is still setup in Outlook 2016 and works perfectly. No prompts. This is good enough for me. I can sign in to web interface for photos, etc.

NOTE: I had grabbed a app-specific password and entered it in Outlook for this account before removing iCloud app.

I have still not heard back from Apple Support on my log submission, but I tried to reinstall iCloud for Windows this afternoon - and the same problem continues - I keep getting asked for my password. I uninstalled iCloud for Windows - again - and intend to keep it off my computer until I get some good reason to reinstall it.

Thankfully, Google Chrome offers a useful alternative to bookmark syncing that meets my current needs.
