Edits on photos in iPhone, disappear and photos are reversed to original

All - Honestly, I could not wait anymore and called Apple to see what’s going on and if they had a suggestion. The rep on the phone (2nd level support) confirmed that it is a known issue and he had 5 open cases where folks were waiting on the resolution. He asked me with confidence to upgrade to V 11.4.1 and that would resolve the issue. I did upgrade and the issue is gone on my phone. All my edits stay now...

WORK AROUND

6S+. All up to date. (Issue not limited to 6s+)

Photo cellular turned off - this seems to be the cause - started after I turned cellular off. Being on wifi does not matter. Have not tried turning cellular back on - uses too much data. Others report no correlation to photo cellular.

Problem: Photo edits would dissapear within 24 hours.

Work Around:

1) Save edited photo to a shared folder. Does not need to go to anyone.

2) Save photo from shared folder back to Camera Roll. I usually did this in just a couple of minutes, so I don't know if time maters.

3) Now there are two photos exactly the same in the Camera Roll. In less than 24 hours, the first photo will loose its edits, but both the photos in Shared and the shared-version-copied back to the Camera Roll will still have their edits, but no revert capability.

4) Clean up excess photos as desired.

I tried moving them to my Macbook via Airdrop, just changing the filename in Finder, then manually adding back to Photos but found that it did not solve the issue and the photos were still stripped of their edits.

Once I opened all the images in PS and re-saved as jpegs, I could manually add to Photos and they have remained there since.

✅ This was happening to me and through some testing I think I have found the issue.

I edit my photos via VSCO (free) on my iPhone X. After editing, when saving to the camera roll, the photos would appear for 2-3 seconds then disappear. Thankfully, the edits are stored in the VSCO studio and not lost.

In trying to solve this, I found that even when exporting the edited photos directly to my Mac via AirDrop and manually adding into Photos - the edits were mysteriously stripped of all edits and returned to Live iPhone photos within that same folder. I also found that this was only happening with photos that I took with my iPhone and not photos that were sent to me via text, etc.

My only workaround so far has been to directly export all recent VSCO edits to my Mac via AirDrop, then edit re-save with Photoshop to strip metadata from the images and manually re-add to Photos. So far all images remain and iCloud has backed up Photos on both Mac and iPhone.

The core issue has to be with third party application exports and file naming. When looking at the original photos and edited photos side by side, it appeared that the filename was not changed correctly therefore Photos would strip all edits and return the photo to its original state.

I have same issue and never use any 3rd party software... so it’s nothing to do with 3rd party exports

All edits, including portrait mode, can be lost immediately that photos are synced with iCloud library. Can’t turn library off. Really wish I had never turned it on in the first place

Question: do all of you have “Cellular Data” in the photo setting turned on? I turned that off a few weeks ago and haven’t noticed the issue since then. Turned it on for 3 minutes today and all of a sudden edits started disappearing again!

I’m not confident that this setting is the issue but I’ve had a hunch for a while that it may be the problem.

Hi I am having the same issue. This is with photos edited in the native iPhone app, as well as exports from Camera+ (I’ve tried different export settings in that app as well). I am up to date on the iOS, and I tried turning the cloud sharing/backup for photos off for a few mins and back on. It has not worked...please help!!

I’m having this same problem with my IPhone X photos. All the edits I do (I just had a 12-day trip to Europe and lost all the time I spent making edits to photos) get un-done overnight, the night that follows the edits. My iPhone X is operating with the up-to-date current software version. How do I solve this glitch?

Im having the same issue. I’m not going to turn off iCloud as when I try that it says it will remove all photos not uploaded. I’m on holiday without WiFi and none of my holiday photos are uploaded. I will not risk losing them. Please suggest a workable solution and let us know the timeline to get this fixed. Thanks.

The radio silence here is very disturbing. This is a serious issue. I spend a lot of time editing my photos and now all their edits are gone, many times well before I am ready to publish them. Can we get an update on a fix please?

I am having the exact same issue. I wake up to find edits I spent hours on the previous day gone. Turning off photos on iCloud prompts a warning saying my iPhone was not able to download two full resolution photos. Apple, where’s your response? This is unacceptable.

I have the same problem--I just attempted to chat with Apple Support about it. When the tech asked if I used third-party software, I replied, "Never"--then he was gone and I was unable to resume the conversation.
