Wifi wont connect self assigned IP address

I have trouble with connecting to one wifi in particular - my home wifi. It is a BTHub5 wifi. Sometimes it will connect on its own but without any obvious factor making it work. Most of the time it is disconnected though. When i try to connect it displays the message: “Wifi has the self-assigned IP address fe80::1cd4:b606:23b6:892a and will not be able to connect to the Internet” in system preferences. It will also ask me to provide the password even tho the computer already knows the password, and even when i do enter it again it still doesnt work.

I have tried all the usual solutions including deleting files:

Com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

Com.apple.alf.plist

Com.apple.network.identification.plist

NetworkInterfaces.plist

I am at a loss about what to do. Please help.

Why interface is showing en1 it should be always en0 .

en0, en1, en2 depends on your Hardware. (for example, on my Mac Pro, Wi-Fi shows as en2).

That is not likely to be the issue. The interface in use (whatever its name) appears to support the Wi-Fi channels needed.

Thanks. The removal and readding of the files in system preferences hasnt changed anything so i dont think that was the problem.

I think the problem is more complicated than any of those articals can fix but thank you for trying. Ive read them and nothing seems to work any way.

Ive heard before that it could be caused by a problem with switching between 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ. Im sorry i cant remember the exact details but it was something to do with the Mac not being able to connect to a 2.4Ghz channel?? I dont know im probably not making any sense because i dont know what im talking about! I dont have an airport express

Thanks for your reply. Turning the router off and on again doesnt work unfortunately. I dont think it is a problem with the router as all other devices can connect to it just fine.

Thanks for all of your help. Im not sure that positioning is the problem. I am upstairs and the router is downstairs in the room directly beneath me.

I didnt delete the files i just moved them to the trash. I have moved them back into their normal file now

How do i set the router to automatic? Is it something i do on my computer or sometthing i check on the wifi box? Thanks

I have tried running etrecheck but every time it starts a check the programme just shuts down

Tools are available by holding the Option key while clicking on the Wi-Fi Icon on the menubar. The simplest is the snapshot, like this one:

Please post the bulk of that information or a screen shot, and also: How many Networks do you see?

Do you use only internet service provider router ( as the setting is kept as automatic it will switch from 2.4 GHZ to 5 GHZ , avoid using manual settings , are you using airport express in case it is yes keep it as in off bridge mode .

I don't know what settings have you done in system preferences > networks , even a single mistake or you forgot to add the settings and that will not join the network , if you allow in the next post I can send you some articles and correct screen shots how to configure the network settings .
